  1. TAGORE IS wrong

For us, Mahatma is another name for Bapu or Gandhiji. Sure, but who first called the great soul by that name. According to common belief, Rabindranath Tagore first called Bapu as Mahatma.

The occasion dates back to July 1915. But five years ago, Sabarmati Ashram found a document that revealed that Bapu was referred to as Mahatma by Jivram Kalidas, the state physician of Gondal State, at a public function on January 27, 1915.

So he should have been the first to use the name. However, all that changed two days ago, on Wednesday, when the Ashram received yet another document containing the name Mahatma.

Ninety-six-year-old Manubhai D Parekh’s document, a citation felicitating Gandhiji, is all set to rewrite history. It c ould settle the issue for all time on who used the name Mahatma for Gandhiji first.

The citation Manubhai sent to the Ashram was given to Gandhiji on January 21, 1915. It feted him for his contribution to the struggle for the rights of Indians in South Africa. It was given by Devchand Uttamchand Parekh, an eminent citizen of Jetpur, on behalf of the people of the town.
The citation addressed Bapu as ‘Shriman Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’. It stated that Bapu lived life like a saint in a way prescribed by the scriptures. He was like a Mahan Yogi, it said. The Jetpur community said it was proud of Bapu for his fight for Indians’ cause and happy that he was a Saurashtrian like them.
