Major Advantages of Modi’s Tour to Bangladesh

Major Advantages of Modi’s Tour to Bangladesh (Modi Bangladesh Visit). India since the time of independence, has very cordial relations with all its neighbors. Some of them are on a high pace of development like China and Pakistan while some still seek India’s support for running the economy. Bangladesh is one of those nations who always needs the helping hand of India in order to flourish its economy.

In the post-war era of 1971 war, after getting a separate identity, the relations took many ups and downs. In terms of land, Bangladesh is surrounded by only two countries which are India and Myanmar. But even being a neighbor of Myanmar, most of its interactions took place with India. There are many areas of agreement and disagreements between the two countries. From October 2013, India started exporting 500 Megawatts of electricity per day to Bangladesh over a period of 35 years. After that many developments have taken place between these two nations.Major-Advantages-of-Modis-Tour-to-Bangladesh

Illegal immigration has always been the major point of concern between these two countries. At present, approximately 20 million illegal immigrated are living in India. Some insurgent groups are also related with Bangladesh. ULFA is supposed to have lucrative income from Bangladesh. Some years ago Farraka Barrage was also a point of dispute between both the countries.

Why Recently in News- Modi Bangladesh Visit

Recently Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a tour to Bangladesh and settled 41 years old land boundary issues (111 borders enclaves will be transferred to Bangladesh in exchange of 51 to be handed over to India) along with other 21 agreements which were successfully wrapped up. But he got a surprise for his nation before stepping back to India. In an agreement Bangladesh allowed Indian cargo ships to use Chittagong port (China backed port) and Mongla port in Bangladesh. This agreement was under decisions and was to be signed in 2011 but got delayed as Bangladesh backed out to sign it due to the issue of Tessa agreements. This will not only help civilian vessels to stay but will also make India fearless from Chinese influence on Dhaka.

What is String of Pearls?

Chittagong port was one of the port that was included in the String of Pearls project that is launched to revive silk route in Aisa. The string of pearl includes Gwadar in Pakistan, Hambantota in Srilanka, Marao in the Maldives, and Kyaukpyu and Sittwe in Myanmar. According to Indian perception, China is building ports around Indian boundary to dominate the water of India. This perception got another reason to bother when a Chinese submarine surfaced in Sri Lankan port. After getting access of Chittagong port, it will play a crucial role between two nations i.e. India and china.China is already in the limelight due to the controversies regarding the South China Sea. And its dominating attitude made a bad impact on its relations with some of its neighbors. China Is expected to have good intentions behind a revival of the silk route. But India’s point of concern over its defense engagement on ports led India to think again. But this historical step between these two nations has made India a bit relax and also bridged the gaps between India and Bangladesh. The constant cooperation between these two countries will provide new hooks in the relations of two neighboring countries.
