10 Top Military Operations Conducted By Indian Armed Forces

The Indian Armed Forces are known for their involvement in wide range of tasks and operation. Not just averting the infiltration and maintaining the security of the nation, these forces always stand ahead in neutralizing all kinds of situation emerging in the nation internally. While some were conducted out of the nation to handle the situation, emerged by the imbalance of power or critical military circumstances. Some of the operations that were conducted by Indian Armed Forces are:

  1. Operation Black Tornado – Conducted in November, 2008, the operation was conducted by NSG during the terrorist attack in Mumbai. 9 hostages from Nariman point, 300 from Taj hotel and 250 hostages from Oberoi hotel were rescued from the site. The operation was successfully conduced and huge loss of Sandeep Unnikrishnan in this operation will always be remembered.
  2. Operation Vijay – The operation was conducted by the Indian Air Force and Army in 1999 after the terrorists occupied some posts of India. The operation raised the names of Vikram Batra, Manoj Pandey and Anuj Nayyar as the Heroes of the war. Many other precious soldiers lost their lives in reoccupying the posts.
  3. Operation Cactus – The operation was launched in order to pacify the agitation in Maldives in 1988. A group of Maldivian people planned to overthrow the government. Analyzing the situation, Abdul Gayoom, then president of Maldives called for help from India and some other south Indian nations. India responded swiftly and overcame the situation.
  4. Operation Meghdoot – This operation was conducted to acquire the Siachen glacier after both the sides (India and Pakistan) opened the area for mountaineering expeditions. It was launched on 13th April, 1984. Indian Army took action and claimed the area, known as the highest battlefield.
  5. Operation Pawan – Indian Peacekeeping Force conducted the operation in 1987 to get Jaffna from LTTE. The operation completed with the sacrifice of 216 soldiers. The operation was highly violent and crucial as per the relations of India and Srilanka.
  6. Operation Rahat – The operation was conducted by Indian Air Force and was a rescue and evacuation operation for people stuck in Uttarakhand flood affecting other states in 2013. It was termed as the largest operation by Indian Air force in several years. About 20,000 people were transported and 382 tons of relief material was dropped.
  7. Operation Meghrahat – The Indian Army launched this operation in response to the flood like situation in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014. The army conducted the operation and saved several lives and stranded civilians working day and night.
  8. Operation Raahat – The operation was to rescue Indian citizens from Yemen after Saudi Arabia started airstrikes in Yemen leading to the grim situation in the area. The operation was commanded by the Former Army General V.K. Singh. The evacuation was started by Air India and IAF. Several people of other nationalities were also evacuated in this operation.
  9. Surgical Strike: On 29 September 2016, eleven days after the Uri attack, the Indian Army conducted surgical strikes against suspected militants in Pakistani-administered Kashmir. Lt Gen Ranbir Singh, Indian Director General of Military Operations (DGMO), said that it had received “very credible and specific information” about “terrorist teams” who were preparing to “carry out infiltration and conduct terrorist strikes inside Jammu and Kashmir and in various metros in other states”. The Indian action was meant to pre-empt their infiltration.
  10. Balakot Stike 2019: The 2019 Balakot airstrike was conducted by India in the early morning hours of February 26 when Indian warplanes crossed the de facto border in the disputed region of Kashmir, and dropped bombs in the vicinity of the town of Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan.
