Don’t Carry Liquor In Bihar, Indian Army Warns Soldiers

THE ARMY has warned both serving and retired military personnel not to carry liquor while travelling in Bihar, after some of its personnel were arrested for violating the state government’s prohibition law.

The Canteen Services Directorate (CSD) of the Quartermaster General’s Branch has sent a letter to all command headquarters of the Army, Andaman and Nicobar Command, Ordnance Factory Board, Directorate General Assam Rifles, Naval Headquarters, Air Headquarters and Coast Guard Headquarters.

The letter points out that service personnel, either transiting through Bihar or going to the state, were being arrested for possession of liquor despite possessing relevant authorisation letters.

“In view of the above Act, it is advised that service personnel (serving/retired) while transiting through/going to state of Bihar should not carry/ be in possession of any liquor with them,” says the letter.

The Army Headquarters has pointed out that the Bihar government’s order are not applicable on military cantonments. However, the letter makes it clear that Danapur is the only notified cantonment in Bihar, and other military stations in the state are not exempted. The letter advises military personnel not to consume or carry liquor outside the Danapur cantonment area.

Earlier this month, a case was registered against a Captain after he was caught with 22 bottles of liquor at the Hajipur railway station. The Army officer had brought the liquor from Shillong, where he was posted.

In another incident, the GRP arrested an Army jawan who was travelling on the Jammu Tawi-Guwahati Amarnath Express after a search of his baggage revealed some liquor bottles.
