Why Do Most Aspirants Fail In the SSB Interview?

SSB is a five-day long comprehensive Interview procedure where different characteristics of your personality are tested. Most common misconception of SSB is that highly intellectual aspirants are selected, whereas the truth is that most suitable candidates are selected even if they are of average intelligence.

Following are some of the very strong reasons why aspirants keep failing in the SSB interview:

  1. Too much over confidence:

As an SSB aspirant, you are expected to be confident and sincere. But sometimes individuals tend to be overconfident, especially during PPDTs.  You need to remember that you are there to discuss and frame a common story through group discussion, if you yell, insult or constantly interrupt others while they are speaking, there is a high chance you will get rejected. You are supposed to add quality points to contribute towards framing a story rather than narrating the whole story yourself. Keep quiet when some other individual is speaking and do not come up with any negative points during GD.  Also do not stay quiet all throughout.

  1. Hesitant during PI:

PI selectors are trained to be friendly with you so that you can be comfortable giving answers.  That does not mean you have to be informal or casual with them.  Compose your posture, sit straight, stay in your limits and only give logical answers. Do not overly defend your answers if you are being completely illogical; learn to agree wherever you are wrong. Give logical and thoughtful answers. You can take time to think and answer.

  1. Uncertainty about your own personality:

When you are asked questions like what are your strengths?  What are your weaknesses? Or any other experience in your life, you are supposed to be completely and brutally honest. If you have not figured out yourself about your positives, negatives, weaknesses, etc., there is a great chance of getting rejected. Do not portray any story of your life as a trauma or tragedy, do not express that you regret your decisions, rather state that you’ve learnt something from every incident.

  1. Lack of SSB preparation:

You just cannot go for the SSB interview without any preparation whatsoever. Lack of awareness regarding current affairs, general knowledge, info about Armed Forces, political and social issues, etc. will just lower your confidence level.

  1. Poor communication skills  and writing skills:

TAT and PPDT are the tests where your Communication skills and writing skills will be tested.  You need to thoroughly practice for this test. Any aspirant, who is stuttering or fumbling too much, might get rejected.

  1. Poor command over English language:

There are so many aspirants who are good overall but are poor in English writing as well as speaking skills, thereby getting rejected in SSB.

  1. Lacking OLQs:

This is most key factor of SSB aspirants getting rejected. If selectors do not see any OLQs (Officer Like Qualities) in you, you are most likely to get rejected. These qualities include courage, self-confidence, sincerity, stamina, cooperation towards fellow aspirants, logical reasoning, leadership, decision-making skills, influencing skills, optimism, etc.
