9 Tips For Successful Public Speaking

0
9 Tips For Successful Public Speaking

Public speaking or oration is the process or act of performing a speech focused around an individual directly speaking to a live audience in a structured, deliberate manner in order to inform, influence, or entertain them. A good orator is someone who makes an impact on his/her audience. Public speaking is an important aspect in the SSB since the ability of the candidate to communicate ideas to the fellow candidates and the ability to influence the group and other teammates is assessed.

Some of us often feel anxious while speaking before a large gathering. Some feel self-conscious and aren’t able to perform their best because of the anxiety and nervousness.

Following are some of the tips that you can use for a better, successful and powerful public speaking:

  1. Practice: No skill will come easily to you. You need to practice. Pick up a topic and start preparing on it and speak on it in front of someone with whom you are comfortable. You can even do it in front of the mirror. Practicing will make you feel more confident and this confidence will get transferred from the practice sessions to the real public speaking event.
  2. Remind yourself that human interactions are part of everyday life: You talk and gossip with your friends, you talk with your parents, your teachers, colleagues, and seniors. Public speaking is no more complex than a general discussion and exchange of ideas and information in a large gathering. Make yourself understand that it is nothing to be fearful of.Download eBooks:
  3. Speak slowly: While speaking in front of people, an effective communicator will leave an impact on his/her audience. Speak slowly so that your audience can understand clearly each and every word that you are saying. Speaking too fast will prevent your audience from understanding your content well. So, speak slowly.
  4. Voice modulations and pauses: Whenever we write we make use of commas and full stops. This gives the content a structure. Likewise, while speaking it is necessary to use correct voice modulation and articulation. Know when to emphasize on a point and when to pause to make an impact. Give your audience a moment to take it all in.
  5. Watch Videos: There are n numbers of videos on YouTube of professional orators. Listen to them and watch their body language. Watch and learn how they use their words and their gestures, watch their postures and see how they influence their audience. Practice their techniques.9 Tips For Successful Public Speaking
  6. Record yourself: Pick up a topic and prepare it. Once you are through with preparing, record yourself while speaking. Once you are done, see your recording and focus on your body language and voice modulation. You’ll easily notice and find out in which aspects you can improve.
  7. Breath and exercise before your speech: There are two main reasons for doing a little bit of light exercise before you go up on stage and speak. Firstly, it gets your blood circulating and brings oxygen to your brain, allowing you to think clearer. Light exercise is recommended because it burns the cortisol out of your system. Cortisol, a major stress chemical is made by your body when you’re anxious and stressed. It can also tighten your voice and interfere with your ability to conveying positive body language.
  8. Don’t start talking right away: When you walk up to the podium, just remain silent for a few seconds. Don’t start talking as soon as you get the mike in your hands. You will surely trip on your words. Take a few seconds and breath. Your audience will appreciate this since it shows that you are calm, composed and your thoughts are synchronized. Don’t pause for too long, though.
  9. State the facts: While you are speaking about a topic it is always advised that you provide your audience with facts and figures. Anybody can come and share their experiences and views and mug up a sheet of paper and speak, but an effective communicator will provide the facts and statistics to make an impact. Never give personal life examples. State examples that are known to your audience so that they can relate.

Indian Army Recruits Women For All Combat Roles

Indian Army Recruits Women For All Combat Roles

India will allow women to take up combat roles in all sections of its army, navy and air force, President Pranab Mukherjee said, signalling a radical move towards gender parity in one of the world’s most male-dominated professions.

Most countries employ women in various roles in their armed forces but only a handful, including Australia, Germany, Israel and the United States, have allowed them to take on fighting, or combat, roles.

India, which has one of the largest armies in the world, has resisted such a move, citing concern over women’s vulnerability if captured and over their physical and mental ability to cope with the stress of frontline deployments.

Addressing both houses on the eve of parliament’s budget session, the president – who is also supreme commander of the armed forces – said the government would in future recruit women for fighting roles in the armed forces.

“My government has approved the induction of women as short service commission officers and as fighter pilots in the Indian Air Force. In the future, my government will induct women in all the fighter streams of our armed forces,” Mukherjee said on Tuesday.

“In our country ‘Shakti’, which means power, is the manifestation of female energy. This Shakti defines our strength,” he added.

India began recruiting women to non-medical positions in the armed forces in 1992, yet only 2.5 percent of its more than one  million personnel are women – most of them administrators, intelligence officers, doctors, nurses or dentists.Indian Army Recruits Women For All Combat Roles

In October, the government took the first steps towards bringing women into fighting roles and approved plans by the Indian Air Force for women pilots to fly warplanes from June 2017 on a three-year experimental basis.

Women’s rights activists welcomed the president’s remarks but said that bringing real gender parity into the armed forces would be a slow process.

12 Signs That You Grew Up In A Military Background

Have you ever found yourself in a situation in which a complete stranger or a friend of a friend has asked if you belonged to a military background?  If yes, then there must be something about you and your personality that made them say so. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out if a person is a military brat or not! The personality, the aura, the behaviours and mannerisms speak for themselves.

Every military kid has some qualities and peculiar behaviour habits that make them stand apart from the crowd.
Following are some of the signs that make it easy to say that one is a military brat! :

Download eBooks:

  1. Immense respect for men in uniform. Every military kid has an ever growing respect for men in uniforms. Be it their father or any other Armed Forces personnel, the military families strongly encouraged their children to have respect for them particularly because they can relate to them rather than relating their personal experiences to civilians.
  2. You stand up for national anthem in movie halls. You respect your country’s national anthem and you are proud to show it! You stand up and pay your respects to the national anthem when they play it at the movies and you most probably might find yourself in an awkward situation for being the only one to stand.
  3. You are punctual. Growing up in a military family teaches you many lessons for life, one of them is punctuality. You are likely to arrive 10 minutes early at an event but never 10 minutes late.
  4. You call others (of your age group or younger) by their last name. This is something that you’ve picked up from your father as the soldiers generally call their mates by each other’s last names, a practice which starts from their training. Calling elders as ‘Sir’ and ‘Ma’am’ is another natural mannerism of military kids.
  5. You are a perfectionist, especially about your appearance. You dress for the occasion. Never underdressed or overdressed. Self -appearance shows self- disciple which is a major quality of the Armed Forces personnel so their children too imbibe this quality and always look their best.12 Signs That You Grew Up In A Military Background
  6. You have a lot of stories to tell! With every station your parents are posted to, comes a new story. You hear about the valour of heroic soldiers and you share their stories with your friends and family which shows us how far the soldiers are willing to go to protect their nation.
  7. The dependant card! Along with a school ID card and other ‘normal’ identification cards, you also possess a military dependant card of which we are really proud! I bet, you must have flashed it around in front of your civilian friends’ faces at least once!
  8. Your kitchen is always stacked with rations! Jams, Corn flakes, Custards, Bournvita, Cheese, Breads, Vegetables and Fruits, you name it and we have it! All of these were a vital part of your tiffin during school days!
  9. You easily get along with others, especially with other military brats. Life in the military makes an individual very social and confident and this shows in your personality. You can easily make friends with others and you click instantly with another military kid.
  10. You value diversity. With the Armed Forces being so diverse in nature, it’s no surprise that you have come to value it. The very essence of our country is diversity and you embrace it. You value and respect people from different cultures and ethnicities.
  11. It takes a while for you to answer the ‘where are you from’ question. This is a tricky question for us military brats. It takes us a while to figure out what exactly to say. For the military brats home is more of a feeling than a place.
  12. You are highly responsible. Every military family is highly organized when it comes to doing the daily home chores and tasks. I’m sure you must have been assigned tasks in your childhood that you HAD to do. Not only this, your upbringing has cultivated a sense of social responsibility too in you. You take initiative and show concern for the society as well.

10 Qualities Every Female Soldier Has

The role of women as soldiers and warriors has been evident throughout centuries. As early as the 15th century, Joan of Arc is said to have led the French army during the war against England. Indian Army started recruiting of lady officers in 1992. Personality And SSB Interview

Personality And SSB Interview

Personality. This word is so very common in our vocabulary. Whenever we talk about an individual, we often end up discussing the personality traits of the person and his/her ‘aura’.
To begin with, personality is defined as permanent and relatively stable patterns of thoughts, behaviour and emotions. In simplest of terms, personality of a person is the sum of qualities that form an individual’s distinctive character.
No two people can have the exact same personality. We all are unique and we all differ from one another in some qualities. Certain traits are common to us all, like anger, hunger, happiness, etc. Yet there are some traits that become the single defining feature of our personality or us.

Download eBooks:

It’s no surprise that personality plays a vital role in the SSB. In the 5 day long procedure, the personality i.e. the behaviour, the emotions, the thought processes of the candidates are assessed and checked whether they have the ability to mould themselves and to work as per the norms and requirements of the Armed Forces.
At the initial screening stage, the psychological tests all elicit our personality type and traits and it helps the assessors to make an accurate decision about the candidate.  The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), the Word Association Test (WAT), the Situation Reaction Test (SRT) and the Self-Description Test (SDT) give a holistic view of a candidate’s personality to the assessor. The basic idea of having the psychological tests in the initial screening stage is to separate those candidates whose mental framework matches with the requirements of the Armed Forces better than those whose do not.Personality And SSB Interview
Therefore, In order to succeed in the SSB, one needs to be aware of their personality type and traits and how those can be used as an advantage to excel in the SSB.
Having talked about the relevance and significance of a candidate’s personality in the SSB, I’m mentioning a few ways in which you can get to know yourself better and work on your personality to achieve or dreams!

  1. First of all, you need to introspect. I’ve mentioned this in quite a few of my articles but believe me that introspection leads to so much insight that’ll help you tremendously in life. Everybody, from time to time, needs to spend time thinking about themselves, their strengths, weaknesses, etc. It’s impossible for a human to know everything about themselves without introspecting. So cultivate this habit. Take out 10 minutes every day and try to bring your thoughts, behaviour and feelings in sync. It’ll help you in a great way to know yourself better and when you know yourself better you know what areas you need to work on.
  2. Talk to others. There are areas of our lives that we ourselves are unaware of yet it is visible to others. It’s called the Johari Window and it has great implications in Psychology. We all indulge in some behaviours and actions about which we aren’t aware but they are visible to others. To get a holistic understanding of self, one needs information from all sources. So asking others and getting their point of view about oneself can help a person know himself/herself better.
  3. Understand the requirement that the Armed Forces have out of the candidates. The Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) can be taken as example to understand what the Armed Forces is looking for in the candidates. Be clear that your personality cannot change overnight. You are unique and you cannot be someone else. But you can work with what you have. There are qualities that can be learned and inculcated. Not everything has to or can be inborn.Whenever you’ve read “Do you have it in you?” what exactly came to your mind? The qualities mostly. The Officer Like Qualities to be more precise. These qualities in turn define the personality of an individual. So know your personality type and traits better to excel in the SSB!

6 Tips To Perform Better In Group Planning Exercise

0
Group Planning Exercise

GTO, the days which are fixed for physical tasks to access the actions of the candidates. The tasks here also depends on the performance of the mind linked with the body. When the GTO day starts the first task faced by a group discussion and the second task is GPE i.e. group progressive exercise. The second task is a mixture of planning, discussion and resource management. This task sometimes causes problems to candidates during discussion and during the personal planning process. Here also some tips and tricks works here to ease the candidates in facing and performing better in the task.

oir test and ppdt
  1. Listen and read the plan carefully – The description and the printed instructions give the correct idea and hints to solve the problem. When the officer is reading out and describing the scene, concentrate over the map and make a virtual environment and it will become easy for you to make a suitable plan, read that plan, and classify the resources, problems, helping material, and the priority of problems.
  2. Basic Social Knowledge – Some problems in the GPE need social knowledge, considerably deep knowledge to solve the problem. This knowledge helps you to prioritize the problem and the usage of some resources on the correct way. Lack of social knowledge can lead to weaker solutions or ineffective solutions. Social knowledge helps in identifying the hidden resources in the map and plan.
  3. Correct Priority makes the Point – The problems given in the GPE need to classify correctly on the basis of the correct response on correct timing. The basic formula of classifying is to give first priority to the life second to the material damages and red herring is just to distract you. Giving much hype to red herring is time wastage. When judging the priority in problems having life problems, then firstly handle the situation that needs immediate action and secondly to that which has some time to happen.
  4. Perfect use of Resources – The plan has many resources to use, from human force to the passing by vehicles. What’s necessary is to use them in a perfect way that fulfills the need of the actions? Using resources in a judicious way takes you out of the problems or can take you into more such problems. Even villages, towns, and buildings are also a center of resources.
  5. Patterned way to write the Response – The style of writing, your solution also matters to some extent. Designing or adding grammatical content never supports your recommendation. The thing that matters is the quality of content, perfect way of writing, solving problems from starting to end, cutting less and comprehensive solution is always advised.
  6. Discussion Need Practice – While discussing the final plan, make a calm discussion over prioritization, which needs to be done fast as it is not a major point of chaos. The thing that needs to be discussed is the correct plan to solve the problems. Keep the discussion calm and effective. This skill of discussion in the group has to be learned from day-to-day group discussions in local areas.

DRDO 2015

Hello, Warriors. The Indian Armed forces had undertaken innumerable exercises and underwent many rescue and relief operations in 2015. From joint exercises with friendly foreign nations to Chennai’s flood relief operations, the Armed forces had never backed at the call of distressed.

This could not have been possible without the backbone that supported them all the time- The DRDO. Here is a look back at the achievements of DRDO in 2015 that will make us all proud:

  1. In 2015, in the arena of tactical weapon systems – the DRDO produced and inducted Akash Missile, the medium range air defence system with multi-target, multi-directional capability.
