Garud Commando Shailabh Gaur Who Took 6 Bullets Is Ready To Fight Again. Respect!

0
Garud Commando Shailabh Gaur

Corporal Shailabh Gaur cannot wait to join his unit again. A member of the Indian Air Force’s elite commando unit, Garud, he is recovering from surgery because he took four bullets in the abdomen during a gunbattle with terrorists at the Pathankot Air Base on January 2.

Corporal Gaur says Hollywood movies like Commando and Rambo inspired him in school. With three generations of the family in the defence forces, he says, the choice of career was obvious: He joined the Air Force in 2010 and emerged as the best all-rounder during training that landed him in the elite unit. A commando’s life is hard but the first real test came four years later.

His unit was flown from Adampur to Pathankot on January 1. The men were split into different groups and tasked with patrolling the air base. “It was around 3.30 am when we were asked to look around the vehicle maintenance area and clear the area,” he recounts.

Download:

“We spotted a trail which led us inside the area, terrorists hiding there began firing as the platoon took positions,” he recalls. In the gun battle, Corporal Gursewak Singh was shot and fell to the ground.

Then, Corporal Gaur felt something piercing his abdomen. He thought it was just a sliver of wood because there was a loud explosion at the same time. “Gursewak was a close friend, we had joined the Air Force together and we were buddies,” he says.

The terrorists were firing at the commandoes from their Kalashnikovs. “They used lob grenades while reloading. Mortars were also fired at us. Thankfully, they didn’t explode,” he says. The commandos, though, could not use heavy weapons for the fear of collateral damage. The terrorists were out to destroy assets and the commandoes’ brief was to secure the technical area where fighter jets and radars were.Garud Commando Shailabh Gaur

It was only after the terrorists moved to a different location that Corporal Gaur could attend to his injuries. By then it was nearly 5 am. He had been fighting terrorists for over an hour.

At the Pathankot military hospital, four bullets and splinter pieces were removed from his body. Doctors were surprised that he had survived all that while because there was three litres of blood in the abdominal cavity due to internal bleeding.

But six weeks later, Corporal Gaur has almost recovered. He expects to return to his unit after a fitness test next week.

6 Tips To Become The Leader Of Your Group

0
army officer

We humans are very social by nature. We tend to surround ourselves with people wherever we go. In schools, colleges, workplaces you’ll find that everyone is part of some group or the other. Vey simply put, a group is a number of people who are classed or put together.

When it comes to the SSB, groups play a major role, considering that we have an entire segment of tests which are done in groups.

Every group has a leader. It’s a very basic known fact. All the group members of a particular group are not exactly identical and same in their personality types, their thinking and perceptions. Each person in a group is unique and different. Only one thing remains the same, the dream of being in the Armed Forces. So, even though there are so many individuals who differ from one another, you’ll always find just one leader. Leadership is extremely important. An officer has to be a leader as well in order to be an effective officer. The troops depend and rely on the leadership of their officer, so it is very essential that the candidate must possess these qualities.

Download:

During the SSB, candidates have to undergo the Group Testing Officer’s Tests (GTOs). These tests include the group discussions (GDs), Group Planning Exercise (GPEs), Progressive Group Task (PGT), Group Obstacle Race (snake race), Half Group Task (HGT), Individual Obstacles, Command Task (CT) and Final Group Task (FGT).

I’m going to shed some light on certain tips on how you can emerge as the leader of your group.

  1. Work on your Interpersonal Skills.
This aspect is really important yet the most overlooked one. Most of the times during the GDs, in order to prove their point, candidates turn aggressive. This should be absolutely avoided. It’s a group “discussion” not a debate. When you have something to say, put it respectfully. A leader never hurts other’s sentiments and feelings. It’s often believed that speaking first in a GD often reflects a candidate’s leadership qualities. It can but it’s not necessary. Speaking first is often challenging, since whoever speaks first decides the direction of the GD. Speak only when you know that your point will be productive in moving the discussion forward as it forms the basis.
  2. Learn to be an effective speaker and an effective listener.
In a GD, a candidate’s speaking and listening skills matter a lot. Be confident while you speak. Speak slowly so that your point is understood by all. Whenever you want to add on to a point which is previously said by someone else, don’t paraphrase it and repeat it again. Extract the keywords and say your point (in agreement or disagreement, whichever). Never go off the topic and while giving examples try to quote facts, instead of personal examples.
  3. Be supportive and encouraging.
A true leader always supports and encourages his group members. You should be supportive of other people’s ideas and views. Sometimes, you might people who are introverted and who aren’t confident in public speaking or giving their ideas and views publically. In such situations, as a leader would, you have to encourage them to speak. They are already feeling shy and maybe nervous, so don’t add on to it. Be comforting towards your group members. Try to increase and maintain everyone’s morale.army officer
  4. Be confident.
I’m a big fan of this word. Confidence will literally get you anywhere in life. As I’ve mentioned in my earlier posts, confidence is a must have attitude. When one candidate in a group is confident and positive, the other members are going to easily accept his/her views and ideas. Not everyone can actually put their point forward properly, especially someone who is nervous or anxious but a confident individual will always see the opportunity and maximise the utilisation of the opportunity.
  5. Be creative.
Anyone can come up with a common solution to a problem but a leader will think of innovative ideas and put forward a creative and a new solution to a problem. A candidate must inculcate this habit of thinking creatively and being creative. Things which are scarce are always valued. Similarly a new and a fresh perspective presented in the group interactions will you the edge over your other group members.
  6. Be a team worker.
Sometimes a candidate might focus too much on himself/ herself and forget that they are a member of a group. These tasks are called group testing officer’s tasks for a reason. The assessors want to see whether you can work properly in a group or not and how much can you influence the group. Try to showcase your leadership qualities and at the same time work with every member of the group to make your group a better one. Be an active member of the group.Remember that a leader is not someone who bosses around and tried to impose their own decisions on other, but someone who leads and guides the group to better opportunities. Also Read :

7 Tips To Make A Great First Impression

0
indian army lady officer

“You can make only one first impression”. Indeed it is true. Whenever we first meet someone, it is their non-verbal cues, their body language, their clothes; their mannerisms that help us make an impression of them.

It’s very important to pay heed to these things before one appears for an interview or any significant meeting.
We can make impressions of people in fractions of a second, even if the person is not physically present in front of us. By looking at a photo too, we can make an impression of people. With every new encounter, we are evaluated and yet another person’s impression of us is formed.

Download:

Since the first impressions are impossible to undo, it becomes very important to set proper first impression in order to establish good relationships with others.

Following are some ways in which you can make great first impressions:

  1. Always show up on time.
If you are meeting someone for an interview or for some other important work, it is always advisable that you arrive on time. Being late for an appointment or a meeting or even an outing with friends conveys carelessness and doesn’t give a good impression of you to others.
  2. Be comfortable
Imagine that you have gone to meet someone for the first time and when they arrive, they don’t seem very comfortable and relaxed. What kind of an impression would you have of that person? Not a good one I suppose. So it’s very important to be at ease and to be comfortable when you are meeting new and important people because the other person will also be at ease then and the whole situation will move forward smoothly.
  3. Be confident
Confidence is something that should always be in you. Be it to make a good impression, to be more optimistic, to be an effective speaker, etc. Exhibiting confidence is extremely important to make a good first impression. It shows people that you are sure of yourself.indian army lady officer
  4. Dress appropriately.
According to psychologists, our clothes are a major deciding factor of how we will be evaluated and what kind of an impression others will have of us. Always keep the occasion and the event in mind before stepping out. It’s very important to dress according to the occasion. It has a direct impact on your confidence. You don’t want to feel out of place, do you?
  5. Handshake
Another really important deciding factor about the formation of impressions is your handshake. Your handshake should be warm, sincere and friendly. It should neither be too weak or too firm. A good handshake shouldn’t last more than a few seconds. If you are sitting and are introduced to someone, always stand and shake hands. It shows respect towards the other person.
  6. Eye Contact.
Maintain a proper eye contact with the person with whom you’ve just met. It helps in building rapport. It also shows that you are confident and it attracts the other person towards you as it shows that you are listening to what they are saying.
  7. Smile
The saying “smile and the world smiles too” holds very true when it comes to making good first impressions. Always keep your smile on while meeting new people. It makes you as well as the other person feel as ease. Smiling also makes others to evaluate you more positively. But don’t overdo it.

8 Psychological Tricks To Convince People

1
8 Psychological Tricks To Convince People

Anybody would appreciate and look up to a person with good convincing and persuading skills. Come to think of it, all of our daily conversations are in some way or the other acts of convincing and persuading people. Our conversations include our ideas, views, opinions and feelings about a particular thing. Think about it for a minute: whenever you are involved in any discussion, at the end you will always have a different view about that particular topic of discussion. You might either change your opinion or you might hold it even more assertively.
Either way, your thinking is bound to change. How does that change occur? Due to an individual’s convincing and persuading skills. From the SSB point of view, having good persuading skills is important for your Group Discussions (GD) and Lecturette.

Coming from a psychology background, I can assure you that having good and impactful convincing skills is a major differentiating feature between a successful person and a mediocre person.

Download:

The whole act of convincing and persuading people is psychological. It basically falls under one of its branches called social psychology.

Here are some of the psychological tricks you can use to convince people:

  1. Be confident. Talk fast.
Any individual is more likely to listen to and comply with a person who is confident while speaking and knows what he’s speaking. Audiences assume that a confident speaker is more knowledgeable and trustworthy which acts as an advantage to the speaker since it increases the chances of the audience being convinced. (Amplification hypothesis)
  2. Decide when to talk fast and when to talk slow.
There might come a situation where you feel that the audience is a tough one. In cases where the audience seems hard to please, talk fast. It makes it harder for them to point at the flaws and actually listen to what you are saying. Similarly, when your audience likes you, talk slowly. Give them time to accept what you are saying.
  3. Reciprocity.
It works on the fact that it’s a common human tendency to return a favour and requests done by others. For example, in a college setting it might involve one student asking his friend to give him notes in return for a favour he did his friend earlier.
  4. Flattery.
In other words also known as buttering! Flattery works really well when we want to convince someone. It’s very simple provided you do it right. If you try to flatter someone who thinks highly of himself/herself (high self-esteem) then it’s more likely to work because you are validating their views about themselves which keep their cognitive balance in harmony. But if you flatter someone with low self-esteem, it will probably not work at all since what you are saying is not at all same to what the person thinks of himself/herself.
  5. Mirroring.
This again works on the principle of validation of thoughts about self. The name is quite self-explanatory. During a conversation with someone, observe their body language, their gestures, and their postures. Mirror them. Copy their hand movements while speaking. It will make the person to like you more which in a way will make you to convince them better.
  6. Nod
This trick is really simple yet effective. A nod is basically you telling the other person that you agree with them. This has a psychological effect on the person whom you are trying to convince. A nod is basically you telling the other person that you agree with them. When you want to convince someone nod in front of them while speaking. They will also end up nodding and in a way agreeing with what you are saying.
  7. Foot In The Door
This technique is used by an individual to convince and persuade another individual with a smaller request first and then the actual bigger request. If you go to someone with a request or if you want to persuade someone, you would first ask for a small favour, when the other person accepts that request you would then ask the bigger (actual) request that you wanted all along. Example, Can I borrow the car to go to the store?” followed by “Can I borrow the car for the weekend?” The person is likely to accept the second bigger request since he accepted the first one and in a way feels obligated to accept the second request as well.
  8. Door In The Face Technique
This is the opposite of the foot in the door technique. In this, one starts off with an unreasonable and a bigger request (that he knows will not be accepted) and then comes down to a smaller and more reasonable request (which he actually wanted). The person whom you are trying to convince will automatically comply because you have scaled down your request from being too unreasonable to acceptable.

Next time you want to convince people in a GD, a speech or an interview you might want to try the above-mentioned tricks!
