recommended for Indian Army in my 4th attempt

Hello, folks, this is Arindam Ghoshal. I got recommended for Indian Army in my 4th attempt from 11 SSB, Allahabad. My attempts were as follows:

  1. UES-24 :- Jan, 2015 at 21 SSB Bhopal (Screened Out)
  2. AFCAT :- April 2015 at 1 AFSB Dehradun (Conference Out)
  3. SSCTECH-45 :- July 2015 at 11 SSB, Allahabad (Conference Out)
  4. And finally, SSCTECH-46 :- Oct 2015 at 11 SSB, Allahabad ( RECOMMENDED)

No matter how rich you are, there are certain things which Money can never buy, they are priceless, they can only be earned with Passion, Hardwork and Dedication. Yes, that ‘+’ sign on chest is one of those priceless things . There are three ingredients for getting Success:- Work Hard, work smart and Work constantly. If u miss even one, you wont reach your goal. Like, if you keep on working hard constantly, but don’t work smart, you are wasting time. Similarly, if you are smart and working hard too, but not constantly, you will again fail to achieve your target. And without being said, if you do not work hard, you don’t stand a chance at all. Simple Math !

The Interviewer asked me to tell him one special reason that urges me to join the Army. I replied,” Sir, I want to be among those few who would have the privilege of having the tricolor Flag wrapped around their body when they die”. And then he said” Oh, You seem motivated”. And I firmly replied,’Yes Sir”.

Well, I would not waste time of you guys making you read what all happened with me in those 5 days in different tests and what all topics were there in GD, Lecturette, how did my interview go, how did my GTO go etc etc. Because,, this won’t help you in any way actually. I will just share my journey from the time I started preparation for my first attempt, till I got recommended.

I started preparing for SSB when I was in the 5th semester of my B.Tech as I were to sit for my UES-24 campus interview round. I appeared, cleared the campus round and got a call for UES SSB. Yes, I was super excited because I was actually waiting to face this SSB. I got Bhopal as centre, reported there on 27 Jan, 2015 and got screened out. I was shocked and heartbroken, because I had gone with so much of expectations and dreams and hope. UES is a once in a lifetime entry, and I just lost it in a day after waiting for months and preparing so much. I was very disappointed and upset. Came back to college and started analyzing what went wrong in my screening. Found out the mistakes after lot of introspection. Then I gave AFCAT and cleared it and went to Dehradun for my 2nd SSB and I got screened in this time.

Screening TIP: Do well in both the OIR, attempt all. They are very easy, all you need is speed and accuracy. Keep the speed high from the very first question and sit with the mindset that, Yes, I have to attempt all. Write a simple story in PPDT, do not worry about the writeup, doesn’t matter if you are not able to complete your story. Make it up in the narration. Observe the picture very minutely. Do not waste time in chatting with groupmates in the time before GD, utilize that time, practise your narration as many times you can. And when your turn comes, speak calmly, don’t rush. Regarding GD, there is no need to support your story even if you feel you have written a better story than others. Just go with the story which majority of the groupmates have written. Because that is what is group discussion all about. Convincing them for your own story will only waste your time. In technical entries when there are around 20-24 candidates in one single group, you will be most probably divided into two halves. This is your chance, make the most of it. Try to speak in the GD, do not shout or lose your calm, maintain a gentleman body language. Even if you speak 2-3 times that is also enough. Give valid points supporting the picture. And you will make it !

Got conference out in AFCAT. Though I was pretty confident this time but still could not make it. Went back and then again did introspection and found that I did make some big mistakes. Then came my next attempt of SSCTECH 45, my first SSB for army. The passion for joining the army was in my blood, my dad has served 30 years in the Army. So, always had that zeal to be in the OLIVES. I reported at Allahabad on 7 July 2015, almost 400 candidates had reported, it took a long time to finish the screening process and finally I was screened in. I was happy because that time I felt that getting screened in a Technical entry is also a big deal (Well, actually its not like that :p). All my tests were going good, I was so confident this time that even if they recommend one candidate, I can be that one chap. And just like the previous time, my chest number was not announced. Again heartbroken because now I had to wait for like 3-4 months for my next SSB.

And now came that SSB, SSCTECH-46 (April 2016, OTA Chennai course). Again I got 11SSB Allahbad. This time they were conducting combined SSB for TGC-122 and SSCTECH 46. Again, almost 400+ candidates reported. We were divided in two boards, TGC people were sent to 19 SSB and SSCTECH candidates were sent to 11 SSB. Almost 50 odd people were sent back home because of documents issue. Guys, please make sure that you read the call letter very well and carry all the documents required. Carry every document you have, also the attested photocopies, few extra papers would not make your luggage heavy pals. 36 got screened in finally. We were divided in 4 groups, freshers in group of 8 and repeaters in group of 10. Finally, 4 got recommended and unlike the last 2 times, this time my chest number was Announced, No. 21. I was on cloud nine. Still don’t have the words to explain that moment. All 4 of us just had tears in our eyes. Maybe that was the happiest moment of my Life till date.

I won’t go about the details of testing about this. I would just be sharing few do’s and don’t regarding few tests which I found it with my experience of SSB.

Psych Tests TIP:

Well, few say go well prepared for Psych and some say there is no need for any preparation for psychological tests. And I go with the second saying. Yes ! Actually there is no preparation required folks. You will hear the exact same line from the Officers/Assessors at the SSB when you will go,, and it is pretty much True. The tests are designed such that anyone can take them without any preparation. It all depends upon you. Some people gain confidence only after practicing things and some believe that they do not really require written practice for that test. So, if you feel you want to practice, you may, and if you feel you don’t, then also its fine. You should know yourself well. Don’t listen to anyone regarding this, do what your heart says, if from inside you feel that yes I need to prepare psych tests in writing, then do otherwise no need. I never felt the need, so I never did, not even once. One small advice for the people who feel that their Writing is not fast, then I would suggest that they must practice then. But practice what ? Not necessarily psych tests, writing practice, that’s it. Write anything, take a newspaper or book and write from it for at least half an hour every day.

Download:

Guys, for psych you just need to know yourself well, that’s it. Its all about how well your heart and mind is in alignment with your external personality. And believe me, It is just a test of imagination and your true self and nothing else.

  1. For TAT: Write simple stories. Just write the first stimulus. Don’t waste too much time on thinking that you should write story on good theme. And do not try to be heroic everytime. Central character doesn’t mean he has to always be a hero in some story. It just means you have to write the story around him, that’s it. And I have heard and seen few people writing stories about army and all in almost every picture. Common guys, why ? You are not at all required to do that. If there is a picture which is showing something related to these stuff then only go for this type of theme otherwise no need. And in blank story, some say go prepared some say think there on the spot. Well both the ways work may be. There is no harm in going with a pre conceived story. But what I would suggest to write a practically realistic story related to your personality only. May be any event of your life, anything you feel like, there is no restriction on the domain here. Feel free. Everyone has unique life events.
  2. For WAT: First advice, you need to be real fast in this. Because,, looking at the word then thinking what tow write and then writing a sentence on that, all that in merely 15 seconds !! You can pretty well imagine how quick your mind and hand needs to function simultaneously. Friends, quantity never matters in any of the Psych test. Even if you don’t attempt all 60 WATs, its completely fine. They will get to know about your thought process even if you do 50-60 %. But, try your best to attempt as many as possible. Again, same advice as TAT, just don’t overthink, write whatever comes to your mind. Write short and simple sentences. I could always do 60 complete WAT because I had good writing speed. There are few things to remember in this test is that you should not write any quote or universal/scientific fact like that. Be positive in your responses.
  3. For SRT: Be practical in this test. Put yourself in that situation. No situation is that difficult that you cannot think at all what to write. They are all simple real life incidences that might have happened with most of you or can happen. Write exactly the thing which you will do in that situation. And one thing, complete your responses, do not write a solution in 2-3 words and that’s it. Write short responses only but not that much short that it is not really understood. Keep your mind vast open while attempting SRTs, because you will b needed to think a lot in this test. I could hardly do 40-45 SRTs. But as told earlier, number never matters here.
  4. For Self-Description Test: Well this is a confirmatory test which will reveal how well you actually know yourself. You can either go with preparation for this test or write on the spot there. I never prepared SD too, I always wrote SD right there and then because I had done enough introspection to know myself. For this test, just one advice, do a lot of introspection. Know in and out about yourself. That’s it !recommended for Indian Army in my 4th attempt

GTO Tests TIP:

Well, this series of Test is the best part of testing at SSB. Here you will actually being tested.

  • GD: Brush up your general knowledge and current affairs before going to the SSB. You will get the benefit of that here. The topics will be mostly on some current issue going on in the country or any social issue. They won’t be like if your Current affairs knowledge is week so you won’t be able to speak. Not at all. All can speak. Its just having an extra amount of knowledge and some good stats and facts will add weight to the points you will say. Do not ever lose your temper nor ever try to dominate the group. Just give some good points and cooperate with the group and let everyone speak.
  • Group Planning Exercise: Observe the map very well. Calculate the scale properly while measuring the distances. The plan you will be writing on paper won’t matter much friends, you will be assessed on the basis of the discussion. Do not try to impose on plan, listen to all. It generally a mess in this GD and becomes a fish market, keep your calm. Try to put forward your point whenever you get the chance. One thing, no one will give you chance to speak, its you who will have to make that chance for yourself. And it doesn’t really matter much who gives the final conclusion to the GTO. Don’t bother about that, if you participate well in the discussion and give good points for the plan, then you will automatically be nominated for giving the conclusion. I was nominated by my group to give the plan.
  • Group Tests (PGT, HGT, FGT): There are basically three categories of candidates in the GTO tasks. Explaining this with an example, consider a Train. First category is passengers,, candidates who are in this category they will just pass ahead with the group without participating or saying anything, just like the passengers in train. Second is compartments, just like the compartments help the engine to move forward, similarly, these will be the candidates who will just help to proceed in the task. And last category is the ENGINE, yes. This is the category they are looking for. Just like the engine leas the train and takes everything along with it, similarly, you need not only be a leader but carry everyone along with you too. That means, give ides and help to execute it. There may be times when no idea will come to your mind, its perfectly ok, help others with their ideas in that time.

GTO tasks are all about Josh and active participation. Keep your voice firm and loud all the time, and never show hopelessness. Keep trying and putting the efforts to make things workout.

  • Command Task: You will be made commander, so you need to act as commander too. First rule, listen to the instructions carefully and then call your subordinates wisely. When I say wisely, I actually mean it. Don’t just call anyone with whom you have bonded well. There might be a possibility during the task that you will be required to take ideas from the subordinates, so when calling the fellows, keep this in mind. Second rule, be very firm and clear in giving commands to the subordinates. Do task with them, it should not be like you just stand and order nor it should be like you doing all the task alone. Take the lead and make them do too. When the GTO starts explaining the task, start thinking about executing the task right from there because most of the instruction you would have already heard in your previous tasks.
  • Individual Obstacles: Every task matters, so does this, but speaking frankly, it’s weightage is very less. It wont matter much if you do 7-8 or 13-15. SSB is not really a platform to test your fitness and stamina. The obstacles are very easy and person with average stamina and speed can easily do 9-10. I did 13. Don’t get injured in this. Because doing an extra obstacle might not fetch you anything extra but getting injured while being too fast in tackling the obstacles can hurt you real bad at times.

Interview TIP: Well no special tip for this. All you need to do is self-introspection. That’s it. See the OLQs and find out which one you need to improve. Brush up your current affairs a bit, you should know everything about everything you write in your PIQ form. Interview will revolve around that PIQ only. Just be truthful in your responses. Lying would fetch you only one thing, Not selected. It might be your first interview, but for the person sitting in front of you, for him it might be 1000th. So, do not even think of being smart and showing what you are actually not.Remember friends,, every human on this planet has those 15 OLQs, its just the extent varies from person to person. There is a minimum threshold to become an officer in the armed forces, You just need to be above that threshold. And you have your dream then. With this, signing off. Good Luck to all the aspirants. Go/No-Go Pills: All You Need To Know

0
go no go pills

Hello Warriors! According to reports, the IAF pilots are increasingly using drugs to optimise performance in combat exercises.

They are using these “authorised” pills to boost alertness levels and cognitive powers as well as fight fatigue and sleep deprivation during round-the-clock combat exercises as well as long-range sorties designed to hone war-fighting skills.

Download:

WHAT ARE GO/NO-GO PILLS?

Modafinil and Zolpidem, nicknamed ‘Go/No-Go’ pills respectively, are used to first increase adrenaline and wakefulness, then counteract with sedation for recovery until the next mission.

Modafinil is the ‘Go’ pill which gives the pilot the required adrenaline rush and boosts his alertness and cognitive functions during a combat mission.

The drugs were used across the IAF in Exercise Livewire, a military exercise which simulated a two-front war held from October 31 to November 8 in which all 54 IAF airbases were activated. It was a high-tempo exercise to simulate a war, which requires high adrenaline levels and the ability to push the envelope.

After the adrenaline rush of a combat sortie with the Go pill, a fighter pilot needs to sleep well to ensure he remains sharp for the next mission. This is where the No-Go pill comes into play. It relaxes you, does not let your mind wander or worry.

go no go pills

ARE THERE ANY HEALTH CONCERNS?

Although the rise of drug use raises concerns about potential for addiction, the IAF is firm that their use is regulated.  Handling highly stressful situations becomes more difficult when sleep-deprivation and fatigue come into play, and can negatively affect decision-making ability.

From fighter and helicopter pilots to air traffic controllers and even the top brass, the Go/No-Go pills were used to “good effect” during Livewire, which was designed to test both offensive and defensive capabilities for a two-front war contingency with “swing forces” being rapidly moved from the western theatre to the eastern one, and vice-versa.

Some of the side effects are said to be muscle weakness and behavioural changes.

WHEN AND HOW ARE THEY USED?

The Go/No-Go pills are being used to optimise performance only after extensive clinical trials, both in simulators and actual flying, with all necessary safeguards. For another, side-effects of both the pills during trials were negligible and did not appear to be a cause for concern.

IS IT SAFE?

The field trials and studies were conducted by IAF doctors to validate pharmacological strategies for sleep and alertness management for aircrews in extended operations.

The pills are not meant for everyday use, and are allowed only for specific missions under strict supervision. For another, side-effects of both the pills during trials were negligible and did not appear to be a cause for concern.

Even though it is useful in enhancing the alertness, continuous use might lead to abuse and addiction.

IS THERE ANY HISTORY OF SUCH DRUG USAGE?

Using performance enhancing drugs in the armed forces is not new. Amphetamines and other stimulants, along with sedative and sleeping aids, are widely used in modern armies since at least World War II.

These pills have been authorised and are popular among military aviation circles across the world.

9 Creative Ways To Convince The Interviewing Officer

0
ssb interview

In the SSB, the interview plays a very crucial role, because during the interview process the focus of the Interviewing Officer (IO) is completely on the candidate. Since, majority of the Group Testing Officer’s (GTO) tasks have been done by the time the interview process starts, the IO has a fair idea as to how the candidate works and forms a rapport with the group. The candidate’s skills while working as a team member and other leadership qualities are assessed. So in the interview, the IO is now interested in the candidate, his/her life, his/her ambitions, his/her capabilities, his/her reason to join the Forces and his/her potential contributions to the Forces.

From the candidate’s point of view, the interview process is even more important since the candidate gets the chance to directly converse with the IO and to convince him that he/ she has it in them.

Following are some of the ways to convince the IO:

Download:

  1. Pay attention to what you write in your PIQ form.
The Personal Information Questionnaire form is highly important. It’s a mini reflection of you. The IO will go through your PIQ form first and then come up with questions for your interview. So it’s highly important that whatever you write in your PIQ is 100% true. Do not even think of lying or bluffing. You will be caught and that won’t really give a good impression, would it? Remember whatever you have written in your PIQ form. Most of the questions’ basis would be the form itself.
  2. Your actions need to convince the IO rather than your words.
When you say that you are passionate to join the Armed Forces or you wouldn’t think of any other job but to be an Armed Forces Officer or that this what you’ve always wanted to be and wanted to do then your actions need to be in sync with it. Whatever you’ve done in life so far should vouch for what you are saying. Verbal convincing isn’t good enough. Your actions need to be convincing.
  3. Strengthen your knowledge about the Armed Forces.
Imagine that you go to an organization for an interview and the interviewer asks you “what do you know about us”? Or “do you know when did our organization come into being”? And you don’t know the answers to these questions. What impression would it give about you? On one hand you said that it’s your dream to work in this organization while on the other hand you don’t have the basic knowledge about it. Same goes for the Armed Forces. If you are being assertive that you want to join then it’s expected out of you to know the basic facts about them. It also becomes all the more important if you belong to the Defence background.ssb interview
  4. Be aware of your surroundings and the world.
You need to be aware of what is happening in the world around you. So the current affairs, the news it all becomes very important. Know about the latest news regarding the military, the political and the financial aspects. The main focus is not on testing your GK but it’s expected that you must know what is happening globally and how our country is being affected by it. Be alert. Be socially aware.
  5. Be confident. Believe in yourself.
Convince yourself first before convincing anyone else. You need to be able to tell yourself that ‘yes, I can do this’; ‘I have what it takes to be an Officer’. Believing in yourself is extremely crucial. Imagine someone who isn’t self-assured, low on confidence, nervous, scared sitting in front of the IO. Do you think that such an individual can ever be convincing enough to the IO? A candidate who is confident, who believes in himself/herself has a better chance in convincing the IO since he/she isn’t faking anything. They say what they believe.
  6. Work on the OLQs present in you.
There are certain qualities and traits that are present in all of us, in varying intensities. The Officer Like Qualities are something that must be there in a candidate to become and Officer. While some of them can be worked upon, others are innate. Identify which of the qualities are present in you and sharpen those qualities. Try to develop those qualities which are weak.
  7. Be realistic and logical.
While you speak with the IO, you are constantly being evaluated. Each word that comes out of your mouth is listened to very carefully. So don’t lie. Try not to brag about yourself or your achievements. While answering a trick question be logical. The IO might give you a situation and ask for your reaction, in such situations your reasoning ability is being checked, so think and answer logically.
  8. Remain calm.
The IO will throw questions at you that would be least expected but instead of freaking out or losing your cool, you need to remain focused and answer the questions appropriately. He just wants to see how well do you handle and tackle awkward questions and situations.
  9. Don’t try too hard.
The interview gives you a chance to sit face to face with the IO, converse and convince him that you are Fauji material. When you get a chance to prove that ‘you have it in you’ and that you are fit for the Forces you don’t want to blow it by trying to overdo the convincing act. Portray the OLQs which are present in you and let the IO be convinced by your actions, responses, your confidence, your determination, and your assertiveness. And remember that if you have ‘it’ in you, convincing won’t be a hard task.

6 Ways To Improve Your Story Narration

6 Ways To Improve Your Story Narration

The Pictured Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT) is the third basic screening test that takes place at the first stage in the SSB.
The PPDT involves exposing the candidates to a picture with the help of computer slides, for one minute. Since the picture is usually blurred it’s necessary that the candidates pay attention and gather as much information as possible to write a quality story. On the sheet of paper provided to the candidates on which they will write their story. Also, a rectangle has to be made on the paper, which can be used to mention the age of the people seen in the picture, the mood, the characters, etc. After that one minute is over, the picture won’t be shown anymore and you will be give 4 minutes to write your story and on completion, the sheets will be taken away.

Obviously the board isn’t interested in evaluating your writing skills. What they are interested in is your psychology and personality. They want to see how you perceive a given stimulus, how would you react to it, etc. So the main character and the other characters depict and reflect your personality and opinions.

After the writing part is done, all the candidates sit for the discussion and the sheets on which they had written their story is returned to each candidate, this helps as a reference while narrating the story. The discussion is attended by the GTO, the IO and the Psychologist.  Now, the whole focus is on how the individual group members have perceived the picture and how efficiently can the group come to a common conclusion about the story of the picture.6 Ways To Improve Your Story Narration

Download:

So how can you improve your narration?

  1. There is so much transparency about the SSB procedure nowadays and so many reference books/ sites are available, so the aspirants/ candidates must utilise this opportunity and practice as much as they can. Give yourself enough time to get familiar with the psychological tests that take place in the SSB. Practice as much sample papers as you can. But remember that you only need an idea for how to go about writing the story, kindly don’t just learn the sample stories and write those in the PPDT. You need to project your personality so your story needs to be authentic.
  2. Make a mental note Jot down all the major points of your story and mentally rehearse them. The role of the characters, the mood, the age range, the scenario, all should be crystal clear in your mind. If you have all the pointers ready and in place, you are likely to narrate better.
  3. Be very clear and specific.  In a group of 15-25 candidates, where each has to put their perspective and story forward, it becomes very important to be very specific and not to beat around the bush when it comes to narrating your story and to find a common conclusion. You should be very clear with what you want to say and communicate effectively.
  4. Critically analyse the picture. Be very careful while you try to pick up the various things that are going on in the picture shown to you. You have just 60 seconds to observe and incorporate the scene shown in the picture in your story. There will be things that everyone will notice and write about, so go beyond that and try to observe other things happening in the picture (however small it may seem) and incorporate it in your story. Be logical while doing so.
  5. Listen to everyone.  The setup of the discussion part of PPDT is somewhat like a GD, where everyone is trying to put their point forward. Some candidates might have a point that you didn’t think of or notice, so it’s very important to listen to what everyone is saying. The goal is to come to a common conclusion about the story of the picture shown. This only possible if all the perspectives are heard.
  6. Be confident while speaking. You need to be very clear about your story and while speaking be confident. Try to put your point forward logically and convince others. The main theme of the story should be immediately as the discussion starts. Be active during the discussion.

To succeed in the PPDT be realistic, logical and analytical while writing and narrating your story. It should be reflective of your personality.

  • English: This time English was little different with less questions from synonyms and antonyms. Though English papers was the easiest of all and aspirants could have scored more marks in English papers. Comprehension passage, sentence formation, vocabulary etc were easy this time. Overall, English paper was little difficult this time and we wish candidates will score well in it.
  • GK: General Knowledge was tough as usual and not many candidates will score more marks in this paper. Though few questions from current affairs were easy and scoring. Overall GK question paper was not easy.
  • Maths: Maths question paper with lengthy questions, but one could have scored maximum marks from it. Questions were easy and mix of different topics. Again a good chances for scoring high marks for the candidates applying for AFA and IMA. cds 1 2016 answer keys

Garud Commando Shailabh Gaur Who Took 6 Bullets Is Ready To Fight Again. Respect!

0
Garud Commando Shailabh Gaur

Corporal Shailabh Gaur cannot wait to join his unit again. A member of the Indian Air Force’s elite commando unit, Garud, he is recovering from surgery because he took four bullets in the abdomen during a gunbattle with terrorists at the Pathankot Air Base on January 2.

Corporal Gaur says Hollywood movies like Commando and Rambo inspired him in school. With three generations of the family in the defence forces, he says, the choice of career was obvious: He joined the Air Force in 2010 and emerged as the best all-rounder during training that landed him in the elite unit. A commando’s life is hard but the first real test came four years later.

His unit was flown from Adampur to Pathankot on January 1. The men were split into different groups and tasked with patrolling the air base. “It was around 3.30 am when we were asked to look around the vehicle maintenance area and clear the area,” he recounts.

Download:

“We spotted a trail which led us inside the area, terrorists hiding there began firing as the platoon took positions,” he recalls. In the gun battle, Corporal Gursewak Singh was shot and fell to the ground.

Then, Corporal Gaur felt something piercing his abdomen. He thought it was just a sliver of wood because there was a loud explosion at the same time. “Gursewak was a close friend, we had joined the Air Force together and we were buddies,” he says.

The terrorists were firing at the commandoes from their Kalashnikovs. “They used lob grenades while reloading. Mortars were also fired at us. Thankfully, they didn’t explode,” he says. The commandos, though, could not use heavy weapons for the fear of collateral damage. The terrorists were out to destroy assets and the commandoes’ brief was to secure the technical area where fighter jets and radars were.Garud Commando Shailabh Gaur

It was only after the terrorists moved to a different location that Corporal Gaur could attend to his injuries. By then it was nearly 5 am. He had been fighting terrorists for over an hour.

At the Pathankot military hospital, four bullets and splinter pieces were removed from his body. Doctors were surprised that he had survived all that while because there was three litres of blood in the abdominal cavity due to internal bleeding.

But six weeks later, Corporal Gaur has almost recovered. He expects to return to his unit after a fitness test next week.
