Making Educated Guess In Objective Tests- Part 2 Of 2

0
objective test

Hello warriors! In part 1, I’ve given some tips regarding making educated guesses if you are not aware of the question or want to give your luck a try. I’ll be giving tips to guess questions in mathematics correctly in this article.

1) Diagrams for Co-ordinate Geometry

Even if you don’t thoroughly understand a concept, drawing an approximate diagram according to the given scale can help you work out the radius, area, equations etc. easily. It might seem like a trivia but it really works in many cases.

2) You can delay practising Kinematics and Trigonometry

Despite what they say about these topics, you need a number of hours or perhaps days and even weeks to really master these two topics. And what do they yield – only 9 or 10 questions at the most out of 120. In the same amount of time, you can probably master several other topics and get your hands on 30-45 marks worth of questions.

So, I will suggest you to touch these topics only when you have extra time and have finished with the rest of your preparation.

Many argue are trigonometric methods can help you solve a number of questions. But what these main questions need are just the basics, which you will probably learn on your own between your school classes, homework, coaching classes, and assignments. For real expertise, you have to be really geeky and nerdy. So, keep your hands off it until you have mastered the rest.

3) Domain and Range of a Function

Questions related to finding domain of a function in NDA are usually asked as below:

If x = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4}, y = {2, 3, 4, 5} and x  X, y    Y, then which of the following is a function in the given set –

(a) f1 = {(x,y) : y = x + 1}

(b) f2 = {(x,y) : x + y = >5}

(c) f3 = {(x,y) : y = x}

(d) None of these

In such questions, you do not have to solve the entire function.

Just put in the extreme values of the set in the function and see if they satisfy the answer. In this question, you can put 0 and 4 for x and 2 and 5 for y. You will be able to get the correct answer – (d) in this case.

4) Finding out n-terms in Mathematics

Perhaps the easiest questions in Maths, these either ask for the nth term or the sum or product of n-terms. The value of ‘n’ is mostly 1, 2 or at the most 3. Simply, put in these values and check whether they fit in.

If you have tried up to ‘3’ and you still do not have the answer, leave it alone. It is most likely to be a high-level question.

Here’s an example for you:

The sum of n natural numbers (1+2+3+….+n) is:

(a) n (n-1)/2

(b) n (n+1)/2

(c) n (n+2)/3

(d) (n+1) (n-1)

Sum of 1 as a natural number should be 1 too.

Put 1 as the value of n. Solving the equations you will get 0 for (a), 1 for (b), 1 for (c) and 0 for (d). Hence, we can rule out (a) and (d).

Now we put 2 as the value of n. Solving (b) equation, we get 3 as the answer while (c) equation dissolves into 8/3, which is not a natural number. Hence, the correct answer is (b).

5)  Generalize the Question

These are the favorite questions of competitive examiners. They have complex orientation and you will have to find one of the variables.

Just assume that two or more of the arbitrary values are zero, one or some other easy value and check your options again.

Here’s an example:

For positive real values, it is given that m3x4 = n3y4 and m2< n2, then

(a)    m3x2 > n3y2

(b)   m3 < y4

(c)    m3x2 < n3y2

(d)   m3 > y4

Solving these will lead you to the hot soup of inequalities.

Hence, here’s an alternative. Assume some easy values for m, x, and n. Let’s say, m = 2, n = 3, and x = 3. You will get y as the fourth root of 24. Approximate it as the square root of 5 (since 5 is the square root of 25). Hence, it can be roughly calculated to be 2.2.

For such questions, approximating values is a good idea.

Put these values in the equation. Cancel out ‘3’ wherever possible and you will soon find the correct answer as (b).

In questions where you get random inclinations of a plane (alpha, beta or whatever), check what will happen if the inclination is zero/90. Put zero or 90 as the value of the plan and see which of the answers satisfy the condition.

You can apply the same logic to find Moment of Inertia about a random axis. Here’s an example:

Find Moment of Inertia (M.O.I) of a rod along an axis at theta degrees from its length passing through the centre:

(a) ML2sin2?/12

(b) ML2cos2?/12

(c) ML2sin?cos2?/12

(d)ML2sin2?cos?/12

We know that the M.O.I of a rod along its length is zero. So if ? = 0, M.O.I = 0 too. Assume ? = 0 and (a), (c) and (d) all turn out to be zero.

Also, the M.O.I of a rod perpendicular to its axis (for ?=90) = ML2/12. Using ? = 90, only (a) gives you that answer. (c) and (d) turn out to be zero. So, (a) is the correct answer.

Isn’t it simple?

6. Let the Mind Rule for Once!

I know what they say about always listening to your heart. But NDA is about testing your Intelligence and not your Intuition. So, let the mind decide which answer to tick and ask the Heart to just be the Motivator for the three hours when you are taking the test.

Pull out some sample NDA papers. Use these tricks to derive the answers to the questions in topics you have not studied yet and check your score!

I got an extra 44 marks in my NDA exam by following this very approach!

No matter what happens, never lose your confidence. Whether it is during preparation, during exam, or after the exams, keep your spirits high.

That reminds me to give you one more warning and one more tip:

Warning: Never carry a book or revision notes to the exam centre. It will just confuse you and stress you out in the last minute. Just carry your admit card and a pencil box/geometry box with the necessary stationery. And get at least six hours of sleep the night before the exam (Refer previous article on this).

Tip: When you feel your spirits floundering in despair, just plug in your earphones and listen to these songs; you can also find a list of some songs on an article on this site:

In English:

  • Firework – Katy Perry
  • Live like you’re dying – Kris Allen
  • Lose Yourself- Eminem
  • Remember the name – Fort Minor
  • Someday – Flipsyde

In Hindi:

  • Baar baar haan, bolo yaar haan – Lagaan
  • Jo soche jo chahe woh kar ke dikha de – Do aur do Paanch
  • Koi Kahe Rehte Rahe – Dil Chahta Hai
  • Kya Karoon – Wake Up Sid
  • Lakshya (the title song) – Lakshya
  • Yeh Honsla Kaise Jhuke – Dor

Since you now have that josh, start preparing now. It’s hardly two months left! For the best book on NDA preparation, do read my review on Pathfinder for NDA & NA Exam in the next article. All the best for your NDA exams! I hope these tips will help you in cracking the exam. Making Educated Guess In Objective Tests- Part 1 Of 2

objective test

Hello warriors! Since the article on how sleep affects your performance was published on this site, some of NDA aspirants have reached out to me on FB complimenting and asking for tips to clear NDA exam. Since there are many tips and tricks on this site regarding the same, I’ll be showing the tips to make educated guesses to the questions you don’t have or have little idea about.

Let me make first thing very clear that, without practice and preparation, none can clear any exam; not even if he/she follows a vast array tips and tricks for the same. This article is for the people who studies very hard and gets confused over the choices of a question. It is recommended that you prepare well for the upcoming exams and try these while you take practice tests. I although do not guarantee the correct answer by these tips, but it’ll be far better than cramming, rolling pencils and peeking out in other’s papers. So, here we go:

1. Steer away from the Highest and the Lowest

In questions which have answers in numerical values, stay away from the extremes. In 60% cases, the highest and the lowest values are not the correct answers. Remember, only 60%, be careful in this!

2. Gamble on One of the Two Options

If you have already crossed out two incorrect answers, gamble on one of the two options in which you are confused. Use other tips here while choosing your pick such as the first one mentioned above.

3. No Negative Marking means You are in the Safe Zone

In case, there are questions like ‘Match the Following’ other similar questions which do not carry negative marking, you are free to play. Never leave such questions un-attempted. Study the marking scheme closely and also read the instructions given in the question paper carefully.

4. Easiest Topic that fetches you 30-40  Marks

Modern Physics with its atoms, nuclei, radiation and all cannot be just ignored. It fetches you as much 30-40 marks in entrance level exams and you hardly need more than a day or two to understand it all.

Just cram up all the formulae. You just can’t let these questions go. Strangely, it requires one-tenth of the preparation time you need for Mechanics but fetches you ten times the marks.

5. Units and Values

There are questions where they play on units and values in General Ability Test. Choose the unit mentioned in three options and choose the value that has been mentioned twice.

Let’s say, in a question related to Heat or Thermodynamics, the options are:

(a)    60 oK

(b)    70 oC

(c)    60 oC

(d)    50 oC

Now since three options mention degree Celsius, the chance of correct answer having oC in the unit part is 75%. Also see that the value 60 is mentioned in both Celsius and Kelvin. Hence, most probably it will be the right value.

Hence, we will choose (c) or 60 oC as our answer. This logic works in 80% of the cases!

6. Re-read Chapter 1 of Physics from your Class 11 NCERT Book

I wonder why no coaching institute pays much attention to this introductory chapter on Measurements. It is so easy and you get at least three questions from Dimensions, Approximation and finding Maximum Error sections.

Make sure you understand it clearly. Read the study material, go through the answer keys and check past year papers with solutions. It is easy and fetches you some ‘free’ marks.

7. Dimensional Analysis is your Friend in Crime

I wonder whether administrators put such questions only to mock students who actually solve them. Sometimes the options given as answers are just so laughable! Just the dimensional analysis of the weirdest questions will lead you to the correct answer – quickly and accurately.

Let’s say, there is a question in which you have to find velocity of an electromagnetic field with weird orientation. Its field values are given as B and E. The options are given as:

(a) (2E/B) 1/2

(b) (2B/E)

(c)  (2E/B)

(d) (2B/E) 1/2

Now, you already know:

Dimensions of an Electric Field are (M1L1T-3A-1), and

Dimensions of a Magnetic Field are (M1L0T-2A-1).

Hence, only E/B gives you the Dimension of Velocity, which is (L1T-1).  We do not need the square root as it will lead to the root of velocity too.

So, our answer is (c) in this case. You do not really need to check for ‘2E’ as only one option gives you correct dimensions.

8. NCERT for Chemistry

My teachers in Class XI and XII always used to say that NCERT books are the ‘Bible’ for all competitive entrance exams in India. And I, as usual, did not pay attention to what they said.

To my horror, I discovered what they said was so true!

So, here are my words of wisdom: Consider NCERT books as the books from where questions will be lifted from – directly. In Maths and Physics, there might be some questions from other books but in Chemistry – every question asked in IIT JEE and NDA was from the NCERT book the last year. In fact, in Inorganic Chemistry, some of the lines were directly quoted from the NCERT book – straight away Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V factor. objective test

9. Putting Values to Narrow Down your Options

Use this trick for questions in which you have to find general expressions for certain scenarios.

Let’s take an easy example. You have to find the expression for Pressure on a Bubble of Radius R in a container situated at H height from the ground level. The water in the container is up to height L.

Your options are:

(a)    P + [pg (L-h)/LR]

(b)   P + [pg LR/(L-h)]

(c)    P + [pg R (L-h)/L]

(d)   P + [pg (L-h)(L-R)/L)

The dimensional analysis will tell you that the first option is not correct. Similarly, the second option too gives you a dimension of Pressure per Unit Area and not just Pressure.

Now, we only have third and fourth options in hand.

We know that the Pressure on the surface of water must be P and (P + pg L) at the base of the container.

At the surface of water, h = L and Pressure = P. At the base of the container, h = 0 and Pressure = (P + pg L). Put these two values in the equations and you will find the correct answer – (d) in this case.

I’ll be updating more tips on making educated guesses in next article of the series-part 2 and will be focusing on mathematics. Do catch it up. Best Of luck!

Lecturette: World Trade Organization

Lecturette: World Trade Organization Introduction: World Trade Organization is an organization that helps the countries to deal fairly and conduct business safely across the international borders. World Trade Organization was established 20 years ago, on 1st January 1995. The main headquarter of the organization is in Geneva, Switzerland. The current director of WTO is Roberto Azevedo.

Members

With the aim to stabilize the international trade, currently 161 nations are its member and 23 observers. The current staff of WTO constitutes 640 members. Seychelles joined the organization this year in April being the 161st member. According to the sources, the WTO member nations count for 96.4% of the total international trade and 96.7% of total global GDP.

Aim and Background

The main purpose of its establishment is the stables free trade for all members. It provides a forum for the countries to have safe agreement on trade where negotiation is safeguarded by WTO. A legal and institutional framework for implementing and monitoring the agreements is also a task of WTO. The birth of WTO was the negotiation among the countries. The predecessor of WTO, GATT (general agreement on terrify and trade) made after World War 2. An initiative of international trade organization also took place, But some members including U.S. on ITO treaty did not approve it leading to its failure. So, GATT was the only body to regulate trade from 1946 to 1995, till the birth of World Trade Organization. Several GATT rounds took place later on as the globalization was increased, it was realized that GATT could not handle the rising global trading challenges and issues. The biggest record negotiation held in 1986 which is known as Uruguay round held in Punta del Este. The round ended creating WTO. Currently, WTO is working on new agreement and negotiation which is known as Doha development agenda which held in Doha, Qatar and started in 2001.Lecturette-World-Trade-Organization

What does it do?

The WTO is run by the government of member countries. It could not work without its secretariat to coordinate its activities. The secretariat consists of the about 600 and its experts who are majorly economists, lawyers, communication experts. The agreement covered by WTO is goods service and intellectual property. They include individual country’s commitment to lower customs tariff and other trade barriers. The agreements are not permanent and packages can be added further. There are several groups in WTO, with highest decision-making authority going to the group, known as ministerial conference which usually meets after every two years. Some main activities of WTO include –

  • To monitor and review the trade policies of members
  • Maintaining transparency in regional and bilateral trade agreements.
  • To settle the disputes among the members emerged from interpretation and application of the agreement.
  • To build the capacity of the government of developing countries in international trade matters.
  • To conduct economic research and subsequently collecting the data of trade to support other activities of World Trade Organization.

Conclusion

World Trade Organization has simplified the negotiation among the nations making it simple to trade and exchange easily with crystal clear deals and agreements. The developing countries got a lot of support from it and expecting to get more in future.

10 Gentleman Etiquettes Every Defence Aspirant Must Know

1
Gentleman Etiquettes

10 Gentleman Etiquettes Every Defence Aspirant Must Know. Being in the armed forces might earn you a great salary, wear top-of-the-line suits, and enjoy the top class facilities, but if you lack basic etiquette, you can never be a true gentleman. In fact, you’ll never be screened in or treated as a gentleman cadet. To put it simply, being a gentleman requires behaving like one too. As, the saying goes, “Fake it, until you make it”,  you need to start being like a gentleman cadet in order to not fake it in the SSBs. Here are some tips and guide to gentleman etiquettes:

1. Make a Good First Impression:

First impression is the best impression. Make sure to leave a good first impression on the people you meet for the first time. Be it the assessors in SSB or your mates, people will always remember the first time you met. So, make sure it is a good memory.

2. Help Others:

A good man stands up for himself, a gentleman stands up for others. Offer help to people even if they don’t ask for it. That’s what make an officer different.

3. Be Dedicated:

This is the most important part as being a soldier in the armed forces is marked by his separation from the “normal” life. A “soldier in active service” does not have a 9 to 5 job, or even a long 60- to 70-hour work week. He is a soldier 24 hours a day, every day of the year. His body, his health, his skills, his time—all that he is—belongs to the military. Even when on leave, he is subject to recall at any time, without notice and for any reason. And whenever ordered into dangerous duty, he is expected to put his very life on the line without question or hesitation. This is only possible with a deep dedication from within.

 4. Connect With People:

Say hello as you’re walking past a stranger. Let someone go in front of you in the grocery line. Make eye contact. Be approachable. It’s one of the best ways to open yourself up to new people, experiences, and professional connections. To be a gentleman while you’re out, always remember it’s all about them. Be a good listener. Ask questions. Take note of what’s important to them, and they’ll take note of you.Gentleman Etiquettes

5. Be Clear About What You Want:

Not making a decision is a decision in itself, and it’s not a good one! If you want the respect of others, know what you want and what you don’t, and be clear about it. Knowing how to say no is one of the most well-respected things you can do for yourself.

6. Be You:

Nobody’s looking to hire or date a Ken doll. Our professional and personal lives are now fused together thanks to technology, so drop all that compartmentalizing and be authentic 24/7. Let your guard down and stop trying to look so glossy. Not to sound all hippy, but just be. Don’t try to be like others.

7. Table Manners And Politeness:

This is something that people notice in you subconsciously. Even if you’ve never mastered the continental style of using utensils (left hand, fork; right hand, knife), it doesn’t take any training to not talk with your mouth full or chew with your mouth open. Also use the golden words “Sorry”, “Please” and “Thank You”. Be well dressed and hygienic.

8. Stand For Something:

I encourage you to live according to a set of ethics or principles that guide you in aspects in your lives. The principles are those 15 Officer Like Qualities that every aspirant should abide by. Those principles shouldn’t be governed by gender roles, societal standards, what your parents expect of you, or anything like that. Instead, they should be based on the lessons you have learned during this adventure called life.

9. Knowledge:

Gather some knowledge about the surrounding world. Be up to date with all the current affairs. You don’t want to be noticed as a person who don’t know who the Prime Minister of India is or the person who don’t know what’s facebook!

10. Plan:

Plan your life ahead. Take your own decisions. If you don’t plan for yourself, chances are that you’ll get into some other’s plan. And guess what they’ve planned for you; nothing!

Reach out to me if you have any queries or questions regarding this through my FB link below. Also share this article with your friends on social media so they could also benefit. It’s never too late to start over. If you weren’t happy with yesterday, try something different today. Don’t stay stuck. Do better. Who knows you might be the next officer in the making!

The National Cadet Corps is the Indian military cadet corps with its Headquarters at New Delhi. It is open to school and college students on voluntary basis. National Cadet Corps is a Tri-Services Organization, comprising the Army, Navy and Air Force, engaged in grooming the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens. The Cadets are given basic military training in small arms and parades. The officers and cadets have no liability for active military service once they complete their course but are given preference over normal candidates during selections based on the achievements in the corps.

Although NCC can’t match the standards of IMA, OTA, NA, AFA and NDA, it is a better start for the candidates who realized their dreams of joining the Indian defence after their schooling. Also, NCC, given the vast benefits, opportunities and reservation, is the largest voluntary youth organisation in the world abiding by it’s motto; Unity and Discipline.

Here is a glimpse of what you want to know everything about NCC and clearing common misconceptions regarding it:

  1. The origin of NCC can be traced back to the ‘ University Corps’ , which was created under the Indian Defence Act 1917, with the object to make up the shortage of the defence services.
  2. National Cadet Corps is a Tri-Services Organisation , comprising Army, Navy and Air Force, engaged in grooming the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens.
  3. The motto of NCC is ‘Unity & Discipline’ which was adopted on 23 Dec 1957. In living up to its motto, the NCC strives to be and is one of the greatest cohesive forces of the nation, bringing together the youth hailing from different parts of the country and moulding them into united, secular and disciplined citizens of the nation.NCC girls
  4. The current existing NCC tricolour flag was introduced in 1954. The three colours in the flag depict the three services in the Corps, red for Army, deep blue for Navy and light blue for the Air Force. The letters NCC and the NCC crest in gold in the middle of the flag encircled by a wreath of lotus, give the flag a colourful look and a distinct identity. Each lotus represents one NCC Directorate(Dte).
  5. The desirability of composing a NCC song was considered in January 1956. An Official Song of the NCC titled “Kadam Mila Ke Chal” was adopted in 1963 and registered in 1969 with the approval of Ministry Of Defence. In 1974 it was felt that the NCC song has failed to catch the imagination of the youth and there was need for a change. In Oct 1982, it changed to the current NCC Song titled “Ham Sabh Bhartiya Hain” . “Ham Sabh Bhartiya Hain” – NCC song is written by Haricharan Singh Parvana.
  6. 32 seats are reserved per course in the IMA for cadets who have passed NCC `C` certificate examination. NCC cadets having 50% aggregate marks in graduation with minimum `B` grade in `C` certificate examination are eligible for short service commission( NCC special entry scheme) without qualifying CDS written examination. They will face direct SSB interview. Seems a good deal for facing direct SSB, right?
  7. Various incentives are given to the cadets ranging from cash to kind. Also, the cadets gets a chance to attend various camps nationwide and also internationally.
  8. NCC provides academically brilliant students with scholarships for sponsoring their education. The NCC welfare society grants 500 scholarships of Rs 5,000/- each to NCC Cadets who excel in academics. The vacancies are allotted to all states based on the enroled strength of each state.

NCC is the organisation which gives the Indian youth a glimpse of what it feels like to be an officer in the Indian armed forces. The respect you get in the society, the pride in you wearing the uniform makes you totally different from your classmates not in NCC. With over 13 lakh active personnel, it is one of the largest reserve forces in the world with Lt Gen Anirudha Chakravarty heading the organisation as the Director General.

I hope this article might’ve made thoughts and mindsets clear about NCC and I hope it’ll open more opportunities for the aspirants to join the Indian defence forces. If you have anything to say on this, do comment below.
