A Navy Seal’s 4 Tips To Boost Mental Toughness

0
US Navy SEALs

I’ve had a 20-year career as a Navy SEAL, 30 years of martial arts training and more than 15 years of yoga practice and teaching to warriors. If there is anything I can teach you, it’s how important your mental strength is, over any physical ability you may possess. The mantra of mind over body is true — you can do anything if you set your mind to it. Here are a few tips to help you build mental toughness, the body strength comes later:

1. Focus on yourself first.

Self-awareness is a place to start building what I call your “unbeatable mind.” Greater self-awareness will help us avoid making the same mistakes over and over, and allow us to get aligned for serious forward momentum.

When I was younger, I was a daydreamer. If you asked me to describe what my future looked like, I would have given you a blank stare. This is not uncommon.

A journal is a good place to establish self-awareness. Even if it’s just 10 minutes a day, find a quiet place where you can avoid disruptions. Do some deep breathing to center yourself and then spend some time candidly reflecting on who you are and where you are in your life. Do this every day and build it into a reliable habit, like brushing your teeth.

2. Figure out your purpose.

My investigation into integrated training and optimal performance propelled journeys into CrossFit, Tai Chi, Chi Gong, Pranayama, remote viewing, visualization, mindfulness meditation, Apache Sacred Silence, Tibetan mantras, Ninjutsu, and San Soo / SCARS.

All of these practices had a large impact on my worldview, the way my mind works, and my performance benefited because of it all. Here are some questions to ask yourself to help determine if you’re on the right or wrong path:

  • What have you been conditioned to think you’re supposed to do with your life?
  • What do you think you are really supposed to do with your life?
  • What do you feel you are really supposed to do with your life?
  • Is there a tiny voice of doubt deep within you suggesting you are on the wrong track?
  • Is that same voice nudging you forward with the sensation that you are on the right track?
  • What ONE thing do you think you are here for? What ONE thing would you focus on if you had nothing holding you back?
  • What would you do differently if you knew you had one year to live?

So what do you do with the insights that follow? For me, it was a powerful self-realization that motivated me to leave a career path that was eating me alive. Asking myself these questions provided guidance and enabled my pursuit of what was my true dream: To become a Navy SEAL.

3. Determine your path.

Developing skills like discipline, dedication and acquiring a capacity for high-performance first requires tuning in to your true self. A path with heart will be authentic to your true self. Not some muddled version of what others think is best for you, but the real you.

This was my situation years ago, my lack of clarity and self-awareness had me chasing goals imposed on me by others, like a life of corporate success on Wall Street. I felt like I was on the wrong path and the only way I got back on track was by becoming more self aware. Start off with the questions listed above and see where they lead you.

4. Support your new purpose with a healthy lifestyle and the support of others.

For many, if you’re life is on the wrong path, you don’t have the energy to make a fitness program part of your daily life, or to fuel yourself with ahealthy, energizing diet. A consequence of poor self-awareness is that a life rut will claim your spiritual, mental and physical health.

A platform of self-awareness that leads to a renewed purpose in life will ultimately require you to take care of your body in a complimentary way. The good news? You’ll be so fired up about being on your true path that energy will no longer be a problem. The key is to harness this energy and commit to a fitness lifestyle (both exercise and nutrition!).

If this is a problem area for you, don’t do it alone. Perhaps the most important attribution to the Navy SEALS is the prominence of the word “team.” Find a group of like-minded others to who will support you. This is how you not only get on the path, but stay on the path.US Navy SEALs

Hacking Into SSB Group Discussion: What Is It?

3
SSB-Group-Discussion

Hello, Warriors! As we know that SSB is conducted in two stages, with the ssb group discussion (GD) coming in the second stage, in the GTO. A GD is a verbal-oriented activity which can be formal or informal.

The candidates express themselves eloquently to make an impact and create a favorable impression. In formal contexts, GDs are used as a tool to identify candidates with the right OLQs.

Why Are GDs Conducted?

GDs are conducted to assess the ability of a candidate to fit in a group and influence it, solve problems, make decisions, communicate effectively, remain calm in a stressful situation and stay positive.

How Are GDs Conducted?

The candidates of the group are given a topic and are asked to discuss the topic for 20-25 minutes and arrive at a consensus. The GD may last for about twenty minutes.

The participants are expected to display initiative, tact, understanding, persuasive ability and motivating, co-ordination skills. The candidates in the group express their views freely and to the point in an audible manner. They must avoid being either domineering or silent and passive.

Types Of GDs:

There are three types of GDs:

  1. Topic Based GDs: These can be classified into three based on the kind of topic given:

  • Factual Topics (Socio Economic Topics e.g. Traffic Chaos)

  • Controversial topics (Argumentation in nature e.g. Brain Drain should be stopped)

  • Abstract Topics (e.g. Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder)

  1. Case Studies: An issue or situation is given to the candidates to discuss and arrive at a solution. This evaluates their ability to think about a solution from various angles.

  1. Group Tasks: These are group activities with specific objectives. e.g. Provide guidelines to setup an additional training academy to train more soldiers of the army.

Features Of a Good GD:

Effective communication, an in-depth discussion which are analytical and logical, cooperative and friendly atmosphere, equal participation and arriving at a broad consensus.

Golden Rules Of GD:

  1. Initiation: It can include a use of proverbs, definitions, anecdotes and relevant quotes.

  2. Continuation: Each member takes turns to participate and continue the discussion using expression such as:

    1. It’s my turn now to say something

    2. You are quite right (Agreement) or I beg to disagree with you (disagreement)

    3. That’s not really relevant here. Let’s not deviate, please. (Focusing on topic)

  3. Conclusion: One of the participants/chest numbers can summarise the discussion in a concise manner.

What do assessors look for?

Some of the important positive personality traits that a candidate must possess to do well at a GD includes communication skills, knowledge of the topic, appropriate body language, reasoning ability, leadership qualities, conflict management, the ability to be a team player with most priority among other OLQs.

With this, I would like to conclude by saying that no single person is born with the abilities to become an officer in the armed forces. If you are determined enough to turn your fate in your favour, even the biggest of the disasters can’t stop you from achieving your goals. But the fact is, a determination is the one which quality that suppresses other OLQs.

Any questions or queries? You are welcome to contact me on FB through the link below.

Let me leave you with a saying that’ll motivate and determine you:

Don’t try to conquer others,

Conquer yourselves and

You would’ve conquered the world”SSB-Group-Discussion

How To Overcome The Fear Of Failure And Be Motivated

0
Indian Army Training

“I’m the only son of my parents. No relatives. I want to join the forces. I’m a die hard aspirant. But sometimes, my senses ticks me saying that if I ever became an officer in the armed forces and there is a war, then let my fate be alone, if something happens to me, who will look after my parents?”

These are the words of an aspirant who wants to join the army and at the same time, wants to look after his aging parents.

Let me tell you one thing if ever you became an officer in the armed forces, your life will be totally different from what it is now. You will be a ‘sarkari damaad’. Your parents will be in a full custody of the Indian Government. Nothing less than but initial years of training will keep you apart and after your marriage, you can move into well furnished ‘damaad ghar’ with your family and take them along wherever your posting is.

There is nothing to worry about in this case and it’s never late to start now. So turn the deviating steering of your vehicle towards your goal and push the accelerator hard.

Here, I give some tips on how to overcome the fear you possess and how to motivate yourself:

  1. Taking small steps: This is good for fear that can seem overwhelming at first. For instance the strong feeling – it can almost feel like a flight or fight response – just before doing public speaking or every time you think of thoughts like this again.

  1. Consider the cost of missed opportunities: The biggest risk that aspirants fail to consider is the benefit they lose by avoiding high risk/high reward opportunities. If you are in front of such an opportunity then grab it tight.

  1. Getting some concrete, positive motivation: Get to the stage where you really feel that you need to stop waiting – or need stop reading one personal development book after another – and action can take some time. One way to get moving is to replace some of your negative thoughts – that creates negative feelings – with clear, positive reasons to get going. Take 5 minutes. Take out a piece of paper and a pen. And write down all the wonderful ways you can come up with how making this change will improve your life.

  2. Seeing failure and rejection in a new light: Often it´s easier to not do something because we fear failure and rejection. We may fear failure when starting on a new career path. And rejection from friends, family and the people around us if we fail. Don´t take failure or rejection that seriously. Know that it´s not the end of the world if you fail. Instead, look at each failure and see the good part about: what you can learn from it and improve next time. Have an abundance mentality. Learn from failures and then they try again.

  1. Take action – The best way to reduce fear and build confidence is taking action. As soon as you do, you’ll begin accumulating experience and knowledge. Everything is hardest the first time. It’s like jumping off a cliff into a lake — after you do it once, you see that the water is safe and each time afterwards is easy. Start off with small steps and build up your confidence until the fear of failure is manageable.

  1. Burn the boats – When ancient Greek armies traveled across the sea to do battle, the first thing they would do after landing was to burn the boats, leaving them stranded. With no way to make it home besides victory, the resolve of the soldiers was strengthened. When success and failure are the only options, you have no choice but to follow through.

  1. Stay Motivated: Here’s a mantra for staying motivated. Just say to yourself every morning and night:

  • Today is the day that I drop the heavy weight of doubts and fears, bury them deep under the ground and take the rest of the journey without them.

  • Today is the day that I take my dreams seriously (but myself not so much!).

  • Today is the day that I make no exceptions to my values but plenty of room for failure, should it wish to show up.

  • Today is the day that I refuse to touch any endeavor unless it is with my absolute best effort. Tomorrow, I will raise the bar higher.

8 Lethal Indian Special Forces You Must Know

0
MARCOS
Soon after the Second World War, the need for highly trained soldiers was realised and thus, the Special Forces were born. While thanks to Hollywood, most of us happen to know about the American Marines, Navy Seal and other American Special Forces are, it’s a shame we hardly know about most of our own Indian Special Forces. Here’s a list of the Indian Special Forces that rank amongst the best in the world.

1) MARCOS :
MARCOS or Marine Commandos is India’s most lethal special force. Though they are trained to engage in battle on all terrains, MARCOS commandos are experts in maritime warfare. The physical test to join MARCOS is so gruesome that more than 80 percent of the applicants drop out in the first, three-day long, physical fitness and aptitude test. Those who successfully complete the test are subjected to a five-week-long process called the ‘hell’s week’ where commandos are put through extreme sleep deprivation coupled with the most difficult physical tasks. These commandos are even capable of firing while lying down, standing, running full-sprint, even backwards and looking into a mirror – with a reaction time of 0.27 seconds. The final stages of the training include an 800-meter long thigh-high mud crawl called the ‘death crawl’, loaded with 25 kg of gear which is concluded with shooting a target 25 meters away with a man standing next to it.

2) Para Commandos :
Para commandos is one of the most highly trained special forces of the Indian Army. Because of the extremely fatal nature of the operations they perform, they are kept at optimum level of operational efficiency and physical fitness, and only the most physically fit, mentally robust, intelligent, and highly motivated soldiers are inducted in the fleet. Para commandos go through the most grueling commando training regimes in the world, apart from daily 20km runs with 60km baggage and man-to-man assault practices; they even have to free fall from belligerent heights of as much as 33,500 feet. They are also highly trained in terrain and environment warfare and deep sea diving. Their most notable and fatal operations included the 1971 war with Pakistan, the 1999 Kargil war and the infamous Operation Bluestar in 1984.

3) Garud Commando Force :
With over 2000 commandos, the Garud Commando Force is a unit of the Indian Air Force and specializes in Airfield Seizure, Special Reconnaissance, Airborne Operations, Air Assault, Special Operations Combat Search and Rescue, and counter insurgency. The training for being a Garud commando is so tough that it can take up to 3 years to qualify as a fully operational Garud. Also, Garud commandos are extremely adept at anti-hijack and counter insurgency training, jungle and snow survival techniques, specialized weapon handling and advanced driving skills.

4) Ghatak Force :
Ghatak force is a special operations infantry platoon that acts as shock troops and lead man-to-man assaults ahead of a battalion. They specialize in raids on enemy artillery positions, airfields, supply dumps and tactical headquarters while also being experts at directing artillery and air attacks on targets deep within enemy lines. Only the most physically and mentally fit soldiers make it into the Ghatak force which is usually 20-men strong. Since they face the enemy face-to-face, they are trained to be undisputed at heli-borne assault, rock climbing, mountain warfare, demolitions, advanced weapons training, close quarter battle and infantry tactics.

5) National Security Guard Or Black Cats :
Created in 1986, the NSG or Black Cats fall neither under Central Armed Police Forces nor under Paramilitary Forces of India. It’s instead a mix of commandos from both the Indian Army and Central Armed Police Forces which is lead by a ‘Director General’ from the Indian Police Service. Comprising two units – the Special Action Group (SAG), which consists entirely of Indian Army personnel; and the Special Ranger Groups (SRG) for counter terrorism activities – the NSG is equipped with some of the most advanced weapons in the world. The selection process is so brutal that it has a dropout rate of 70-80 percent. And the few, who qualify to become NSGs, are sent off to train for another 9 months to become Phantom NSG Commandos.

6) COBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) :
Commando Battalion for Resolute Action is probably the only Indian special force that is specifically trained in guerilla warfare to tackle the notorious Naxalite groups in the country. A part of the CRPF, COBRA commandos are masters of camouflage, jungle warfare, parachute jumps, precision strikes and ambushes. Their sniper units are also one of the best among the armed forces of India.

7) Special Frontier Force :
Created on 14th November 1962, the SFF is a paramilitary special force which specializes in special reconnaissance, direct action, hostage rescue, counter-terrorism, unconventional warfare and covert operations. This specialized force was created in the wake of another Sino-Indian war and it operates in sync with RAW (Research and Analysis Wing). The commandos are supremely trained in guerrilla tactics, mountain and jungle warfare, and parachute jumps.

8) Force One :
After the Mumbai terror attacks, the Maharashtra government brought together the best commandos and assembled the youngest Indian special force called Force One. The sole motive of this squad is to protect the Mumbai metropolitan area when under threat. Force One is one of the fastest response teams in the world and can get ready for action in less than 15 minutes. From over 3000 applications, 216 of the best soldiers were selected who were then trained under close guidance from the Israeli Special Forces.
