Having a Peaceful Group Discussion in SSB

3
group discussion in ssb interview

Group discussions are a big part of testing in SSB. This is so because not only you gave a proper dedicated group discussion exercise but also you have to face group discussions on a number of occasions. These occasions include the discussion at the time of stage one testing for arriving at a common story and the discussion in the group planning exercise/military planning exercise to arrive at a common plan. Thus you face GD a lot of times in SSB. The most common problem which candidates face in GD’s is that it is full of chaos. Everybody wants to keep their own point and not let others speak. This makes GD a violent exercise where all people want to do is dominate. This kind of GD is surely a tool to irritate the assessor and cast a negative impression of the group. I am sure you all want to have a healthy and peaceful GD and I hope the following tips will help you in doing so:

Having a Peaceful Group Discussion in SSB

  1. Never lose your cool: I agree it gets difficult to come in a rage mode when people around you are group discussion in ssb interviewshouting and not paying attention to what you say. There may come a time when you are like a a mediator, trying to calm them down and establish peace, still no one listens to you. Then suddenly you may also go in the same angry mode. Here is the key, no matter how much they raise their voice and no matter how much they shout, never lose your cool. You’ll appear as a better person.
  2. Choose a high level topic: This is again a way to have a healthy discussion. If you are able to choose the topic of high level, definitely the discussion will be peaceful. Of course it depends on the collective decision of the group, but still try you best to choose a high level topic. There won’t be chaos as there won’t be many points.
  3. Don’t be the mediator: Many candidates try becoming the mediator of the group. They think that if they’ll do so, they’ll impress the candidates as well as the GTO. Sadly this is not the case. Anybody who has reached to the stage of SSB is good enough to represent themselves; you need not be their lawyer. This kind of behavior not only irritates the fellow candidates, it doesn’t cast a very good impression in front of the assessor too.
  4. Give other a chance: If you’ll be the know all say all person in the group, nobody will like. Smartness is appreciated, over-smartness is disliked. If you do not let others speak, it’ll work against you, because the assessor will not get a chance to see others. This will irritate them. Also your fellow members won’t like you.
  5. Talk to the group before: Take them in confidence and practice for GD’s before. It is not possible to prepare for the entire GD before Stage one testing, but you can still talk to your group mates and tell them not to create a scene. It works. For stage 2 testing GD’s you can practice mock GD’s with you group. This will give a fair idea of how the GD is going to be in reality.

Excelling in Group Planning Exercise

Group Planning Exercise

GPE or Group Planning Exercise also known as Military Planning Exercise or MPE is a test in the Group Task series where the candidates are given some problems and asked to overcome them in certain duration of time. In Group Planning Exercise you’ll be generally given a set of four problems, out of them two will be major ones, one a little lighter and one a small unnecessary problem. You can see the example for them on our website. You can also refer to the article on Group Planning Exercise for a detailed explanation on the kind of problems, their nature and how to solve them. Here however we’ll be dealing with some tips on how to excel in the Group Planning Exercise. So in GPE you are asked to write your solution on a piece of paper and then discuss all the solutions together with your group and then arrive at a common solution.

Excelling in Group Planning Exercise

  1. Write neatly, carefully: You need to maintain a good handwriting while you write your solution. As Group Planning Exercisetime will be a constraint so you are likely to mess up your handwriting. There are myths regarding the Group Planning Exercise solution, many people say the GTO never reads it. But you have never been a witness to what happens inside the board, so please write carefully and neatly.
  2. Apply Logic: Do not go for bookish solutions. There might be solutions where country is being given more priority and in some life is given priority. It is your own appreciation what you give priority to. There are no hard and fats rules to solve Group Planning Exercise, and I am sure if you stick to others solutions you are likely to fail. So read a few solutions, and what matters the most is applying your brain.
  3. Be analytical: Analyzing a problem is even bigger a task than solving it. If you are able to analyze a problem well you can excel in Group Planning Exercise very well. Look out for the minutest details, look out for the resources and apply them in your solution. Read the problem carefully and listen to the instructions very prominently.
  4. Divide and conquer: Candidates feel that they have to put the whole group to work for a single problem. This is not the case. You can divide your group in two parts and work for the major two problems.
  5. Don’t speak first in the discussion: if you speak first in the discussion you’ll open up your cards. Listen you at least one more person before you speak. In this way you can also check whether or not you have missed out any points, because sometimes in hurry you might miss points. In this case when you feel the solution which you wrote is not as good as the plan others are speaking, change your side. Go with the plan you think suits the best.
  6. Learn to find mistakes: If you can learn the art of finding small mistakes in others plans, you can come up as the hero in the planning exercise. Listen to their plan and find small mistakes, do not say them in a condescending manner, instead comment politely, that you plan is good but lacks this. Do opt yourself for the person who narrates the group story.

Do achievements matter?

4
indian military academy

While filling the PIQ form, there are sections which ask you about your achievements in different things. While some of your academic and extra-curricular records are full of achievements, some of you were probably a quiet child in school and college and thus do not have that much of achievements. Those candidates who do not have that much of achievements often feel a little conscious on seeing candidates having so many of them. They feel intimidated and become nervous as a result. The question here is, are achievements important from SSB’s point of view?

What achievements are we talking about?

If you have achievements in different aspects it certainly means you are good in that thing. It is not indian military academynecessary that you should have achievements regarding studies only, or regarding sports only. You can have achievements in any field. Everybody has their own zone, and they are masters in their zone. No achievement id big or small, if you have done something small too, it is important and noticeable. Here we are talking about all kinds of achievements, it can be winning a small debate in your class or it might be a national level thing, both are equally important. However, it is highly advised that you should mention only those which you have a certificate for. You should be able to back up what you are saying, and should be in a position to answer questions related to that event.

Are they decisive in selection?

Not really. SSB is to look for Officer Like Qualities. Having achievements show that you are good and confident. So from that point of view they do cast an impact. If you have been a person who used to participate in a lot of activities and bag prizes for the same, then definitely you have the confidence to face the public, be a leader and be good in something. They certainly play a vital role in enhancing your personality. So if you look it this way, they do help you in certain way. But one thing to keep in mind is that no amount of achievement is going to help if you are not having the OLQ’s and even if you don’t have any achievement then too having OLQ’s will definitely put you through.

What if I don’t have any achievement?

As mentioned above, if you have it in you you’ll make it through, irrespective of the number of achievements. One thing I want to mention here is that everybody has potential and everybody has something in which they are good at. Identify that thing. And maybe you have certain achievements but are not sure whether to put it or not. My advice is do put it, no matter how small it is. However keep in mind that if you have a lot of achievements then mention the big one’s only, and ignore the small one’s. Everybody has a hero inside them, it’s the time that you wake that up and identify.

I am sure those articles help our aspirants who clear the written, however this article id being written for those who do not clear the written. So guys, what do you need to do after you don’t clear a written exam, I ‘ll save the moral lecture of not losing hope and trying again because I am sure you want to do that and that is why you started reading it in the first place. Well here is a quick list, go through it:

Failed in Written Test? What To Do Next

  1. Do not spend more than two days in sadness: I know it can be really hard to see your friends get written testthrough the exam you gave as well. You might have been the know all person, teaching everybody stuff, and helping them out with things. But as the results came you saw your number was not in the list and you turned into the dark horse (the other way round). You have a right to get sad. So what, you cannot afford to spend more than two days in being sad. As you have more work to do than those who cleared it.
  2. Next two days scrutiny: Now pull out the question paper, and analyze it. Mark the areas you were weak and couldn’t answer in red. This process should also not take more than two days. You time is precious! So find out the reason why you may have failed.
  3. The morning after that: Get up early the next morning. Make a cup of coffee, and sit down with your study material. No time can match the morning studies. Congrats you have successfully started your preparations. But wait, this is not the time to start studying. This is the time to plan. This morning you plan you routine of studies. Anything done in a timely fashion will yield result.
  4. The beginning: Do not wait after planning. I am sure you planned in a proper way by analyzing in which areas you need more help. So study your way through till the next exam. You need to follow your study plan and so I am requesting you to make a realistic one. It is easy to say that you’ll study five hours but difficult to follow. So make a realistic plan. Make notes, that will help you in revising at the end.
  5. Keep track: the best way to keep track is to note what you studied. So maintain a record for the dame. Note down the topics you have mastered.
  6. Be productive: Sit only for an hour but make sure that things are going in your head. There is no point struggling for five hours and not retaining anything.
  7. Keep updating yourself: In the process do not forget to keep a track of the upcoming exams. Make a note of all of the exams which you are eligible for, their exam dates and the dates on which the form submission starts and ends.

I know it can be disheartening to fail at the first step, but it is easier to prepare from the beginning and start all over again. Happy preparations!

Is taking a break for SSB justified?

0
ssb interview

We get a lot of questions from candidates who ask us that will be right for them to drop a year and prepare for SSB. A lot of candidates form different age groups ask the same question, some ask about dropping after 12th, a year to prepare for exams after 10+2. Some candidates ask that should they take up a job or not after graduation, in order to prepare for SSB. Some are confused that whether they should continue with their job or take a break and prepare for SSB. Here we are trying to deal with such questions:

Is taking a break for SSB justified

  1. Should I drop a year to prepare for SSB? I would suggest you not to. You might think that if you ssb interviewdrop a year it’ll show your dedication towards your goal of getting into defense. But this decision is not logical and practical. If you take a break and still not succeed then that break will turn out to be a waste. A break after your education will raise some questions definitely in your interview for a job, or if you get through a good institute like IIM or any other decent college. I am not saying that you gap will be a cause of rejection in private sector, but you’ll have to face unnecessary questions. Also taking a gap for preparing for SSB is not a way to show your sincerity, it doesn’t impresses the board in any way.
  1. Won’t the preparation and job/study be hectic? Definitely it’ll be a little hectic, but do you think your job in defense will be easy? Certainly not. If you stick to a routine and make sure that you are doing continuous preparations it’ll never get out of control. The problem arises when things pile up, and then you’ll feel workload. Otherwise if you are sticking to you routine of preparing every day, even for say and hour, you’ll not feel much pressure.
  1. How can I manage frequent leaves to go for SSB’s? Another thing which candidates worry about is the leaves from their work or college. They say that since there are so many entries in the defense sector, hence they may find a chance to appear for a lot of them. How can they manage to get leaves so often. My suggestion here is that, in some cases you can schedule your SSB, so in that case schedule along with your leaves. Else you can try for absentee batches. Other option is to get paid leaves. You can also choose the SSB/entry which you find is best suited for you and go selectively for them. I have seen a lot of working people making it through.
  1. Will I get enough time to prepare? As mentioned it’ll be a little hectic, but you can find time. I have a friend who made it in navy. She was working for an MNC, and had to travel every day to her office for about 2 hours. She used to read SRT’s, TAT and GK on her way to office, and then in office too she used to read stuff as soon as she used to find time. So it depends on your determination. In fact it’ll cast a much better impression on the board to see that you are working also, and can perform well in SSB too.

Mistakes to avoid during Psychological Tests

1
Psychologist-Test-Day-2-SSB

Psychological Tests are a battery of tests through which the psychologist assesses a candidate. These tests include Thematic Apperception Test (TAT), Word Association Test(WAT), Situation Reaction Test (SRT) and Self-Description Test (SDT). These tests are the only medium through which a psychologist can judge a candidate. He bases his judgment on what a candidate writes in the answer sheet and on the PIQ form that a candidate fills. Your personality which comes out from the PIQ form should match with the personality which comes out from the answers you write in the paper. Since the psychologist never meets you in person, except for the conference, these tests and the PIQ form are the only means to impress him. He can get to know you only through these tools. So there is a huge need to be careful about it. Given below are a few mistakes to avoid during these tests:

Mistakes to avoid during Psychological Tests

  1. Writing in a bad handwriting: As mentioned above, your test papers and your PIQ form is the only Psychologist-Test-Day-2-SSBway in which you are judged by the psychologist. You would have heard that first impression is the last impression, and in order to make a good first impression, you need to write in a legible handwriting. The time constraint in these tests is severe and it puts you under a huge pressure to write fast, and eventually your hand writing becomes pathetic. Try as much as possible to avoid bad handwriting and write in a neat, legible way.
  2. Writing preconceived ideas: You may fall for some plots of the stories, or some mature reactions or some attractive sentences, or somebody’s mind-blowing self-description. These may attract your attention and may appeal to you so much that you would like to write them in your own paper. But the thing about these things is that, they are not yours. They are from somebody else, and psychology just like finger print is different for everybody. So be original in your thoughts.
  3. Being Nervous: Now you would say that it is not in your hand, but being nervous is only going to block your head and clog your mind, and thus you’ll lose all the ideas which you may have utilized otherwise to think. Although it is hard to avoid being nervous because of the time constraint since you have to do a lot of thinking in a short duration. To avoid being nervous, all you need to do is practice before you go for the SSB.
  4. Not looking the picture properly: Candidates tend to rush into start writing the story as soon as the picture appears. So they do not pay enough attention on the picture. The 30 seconds for which the picture appears on the screen is only given for the thinking part, do not rush into writing the things that time. Utilize the time to see the picture thoroughly.

Things which do not help in SSB Interview (But we think they do)

0
indian air force pilots

Hello aspirants. We hear so many things from so many sources, about SSB. Some tell us that clothes are important while some others tell us that English is. We are torn between the things which are important and which are not. We often take advices from our friends who have been to SSB, or from somebody who we think can guide us. We hear so many versions of important thing that we get confused, and device a new version for ourselves! Here through this piece of writing I hope I can remove some doubts as to what things are not important in SSB.

Things which do not help in SSB Interview

  1. Dress: Appearance matters, sometime a lot. But a job in defense is not a media job, where indian air force pilotsappearance would count so much. You would say that how can I neglect the importance of dress, when I myself write about being in proper and suitable dress. Well dressing is important, but the type of dress is more important. What I mean by saying this is that you need to be dressed according to the occasion, but do not panic if you are not. If you are directly coming from GTO, for the interview, you better focus on calming yourself. So for them dress is like a rule, you don’t have to show your best fashion sense, but just be dressed in the thing they ask you to, in modest form.
  2. English: The language you are supposed to communicate your ideas in is English. It does not mean that you have to be totally expert in English. We always tell you to focus on English. That is because we do not want the language to be a hindrance in your thoughts, which you want to communicate. I have seen a few friends of mine, who were very bad in spoken English, but still managed to become officers, and they spoke whenever they got stuck in Hindi. So you can communicate your thoughts in Hindi, but revert back to English as soon as possible.
  3. Having a defense connect: A lot of people tell us that officer’s kids have it easy in SSB. In fact I have done an article on how they do not have it easy, instead it is more difficult for them! You need not have a defense connect to be successful in SSB. They take you for who and what you are not what your back ground is.
  4. A star studded school or college background: Many candidates feel that they do not have enough achievements in sports or extra-curricular and so they might not be able to get through SSB. It is not a competition, it is test for the right fit, even if you are a winner of national level sport or cultural thing, but if you don’t have what they are looking for they won’t take you.

I would like to conclude by saying that the most important thing in SSB is being who and what you are and having the qualities which they are looking for, anything else is not important.
