NDA Revamps Curriculum

The National Defence Academy (NDA) has initiated a significant revision of its curriculum, incorporating subjects such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, cyber, space, and information technology to address the evolving nature of technology-driven warfare. This move is spearheaded by the Inter-Services Study Group (ISSG) and the Academic Study Group (ASG), which are responsible for the periodic review of the academic programs at the NDA.

A senior official from the NDA explained, “This step was taken in response to the rapid changes in warfare and the integration of technology-driven systems in the armed forces. Early orientation to these subjects has become necessary, and the academy is moving in that direction with internal committees working on it at various levels.”

The emphasis on technological knowledge for military officers was further echoed by a senior Naval officer, who stated, “Technological knowledge has become the most essential aspect for military officers. Several systems, equipment, and operating methods now incorporate advanced technologies such as AI and machine learning. Thus, early exposure to these subjects for cadets at the academy level is crucial considering the changing dynamics of modern warfare.”

During the passing out parade of the 146th course, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Manoj Pande highlighted the importance of technical competency. “To operate in the battlefield of tomorrow, you need to enhance your technical competency thresholds. So keep your quest to embrace technology and strive for professional excellence,” he urged the cadets.

NDA cadets currently earn degrees in BA, B.Sc, or B.Sc (Computer Science) from Jawaharlal Nehru University, and the All India Council for Technical Education has recognized its B.Tech degree for the Indian Navy and Air Force.

In his academic report for the 146th term, NDA’s principal Om Prakash Shukla emphasized the continuous review and realignment of the academy’s training programs with emerging service requirements and academic advancements. “Several vital issues of the academic curriculum have been deliberated as part of the ISSG, leading to the enhancement of academic thresholds, including a thorough revamping of the academic syllabi through the forthcoming ASG,” Shukla noted.

He further mentioned that fostering an academic mindset and a spirit of inquisitiveness among cadets is indispensable for future military leaders. “An innovative instruction methodology is being developed to emphasize these aspects. Benchmarking of academic performance has been institutionalized, with an increased number of cadets achieving high-performance marks. With around 32 percent of cadets scoring 75 percent marks and above, this term’s results have surpassed the benchmark adopted for academic training,” Shukla added.

The NDA has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with IIT Powai and the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) to access their online resources and live lectures. Access to the National Knowledge Network and Inflibnet further enhances the cadets’ learning experience.
