Lt Gen Pratik Sharma Reviews Counter-Insurgency Preparedness at Forward Posts Along Pir Panjal Range

Northern Command intensifies surveillance and threat mitigation along key Himalayan frontier.

Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command, conducted a high-level review of counter-insurgency and counter-infiltration operations along the Pir Panjal Range on July 11. The visit to forward posts was aimed at evaluating the current security posture and reinforcing operational strategies in this strategically sensitive region of Jammu and Kashmir.

Lt Gen Sharma inspected troop deployments and interacted with personnel engaged in frontline duties. Emphasizing aggressive intent, seamless surveillance, and uninterrupted operational readiness, he outlined directives to strengthen ground-level coordination and responsiveness. The visit comes at a time of heightened security concerns and reinforces the Army’s commitment to maintaining control over infiltration-prone corridors.

The Pir Panjal Range, a key part of the Lesser Himalayas, remains a vital frontier due to its geographical and military significance. The region includes the historic Haji Pir Pass, which has been at the center of major military engagements in 1948 and 1965. Though the pass is currently under Pakistani control, its proximity to critical infiltration routes necessitates a robust and sustained security presence.

Lt Gen Sharma, commissioned into the Madras Regiment in 1987, brings over 37 years of experience across various operational, strategic, and technological domains. His previous roles as Director General of Military Operations and Director General of Information Warfare reflect his expertise in integrating cyber capabilities and psychological operations into traditional counter-insurgency frameworks.

Since the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019, the Indian Army has adopted a proactive posture in neutralizing threats and preventing cross-border infiltration. Under Lt Gen Sharma’s leadership, the focus has shifted toward integrating intelligence, surveillance, and rapid-response mechanisms. Military studies suggest that enhanced leadership and persistent monitoring can increase operational success in counter-insurgency efforts by as much as 30 percent.
