Recommended For Indian Navy In My 1st Attempt

1
recommended-for-indian-navy-in-my-1st-attempt

Hello Everyone! My name is Madhusudan Pandit and I am form Delhi. I feel really proud and happy to share my story and hope this will earn a credit by paving a way for all defense aspirants, as it did for me. Unusual form other stories – my story is little different because this story includes both success and failure at the same time and reminds us that how much versatile our life is.

I am an MBA and I am 24 years old, therefore this was my 1st and the last attempt for a SSB because I was about to get overaged for defense services. In July 2015 I received a letter to attend a SSB for “Indian Navy PC(LOG) – Jan 2016 COURSE”. I was selected for SSB as per my graduation marks, on merit basis. The letter included all details of the process and the things to bring along. My humble advise to all aspirants is to please read your letter carefully and do not miss anything that is asked to present at the time of reporting.  I was asked to report at MCO Coimbatore railway station at 0600 Hrs on 6th of July 2015. I flew form Delhi and reached Coimbatore a day before and prepared myself for day 1. The only thing in my mind was that I didn’t want to return on Day 1 of the process so prepared myself for screening test and practiced some cube questions and few other logical reasoning questions. Next day morning at sharp 6:00 Am a bus boarded us to INS Agrani.

As soon as we reached INS Agrani, they asked us to keep our bags to a side and form 2 lines. One for the fresher’s and other for the repeaters. The main purpose of these lines is just to decide that who’s going to get the travel allowance and who will not get it. And yes they pay the amount of AC 3tier even if you have travelled by Air.

Things to remember on Day 1 –

  • Make sure that you are in formals else they don’t entertain you and may ask to change in front of everyone and that can be really embarrassing.
  • Always arrange your documents in a proper file and in a proper sequence.
  • Listen to the instructions very carefully and do not talk among yourself because if you miss things then they don’t leave a chance to shame you.

Day 1 – Screening Test – Verbal & Non Verbal

There were 2 sets and 45 questions in each test. Total time 40 mins – 20 mins each. Most of the questions were related to cubes, family tree and few other logical reasoning questions. Although the scores are not declared but as per my gut feeling I did at-least 80 correct out of 90.  They were quite easy if you have ever prepared for CAT or any similar competitive exam.

Tips: – Stay focused and attempt all questions within time limit.

PPDT – Picture perception and description test

A hazy picture was shown wherein I saw a man with a blanket and he was in a crowd. As per me it was a local fair on the country side near a village.  So I wrote a story of a village panchayat Pradhan who visited the village fair to buy some urea neem coated seeds that can increase the yield of his crops.

My suggestion is that the narration is most important part of this activity. No matter if you have done a few mistakes while writing your story but if you are confident enough to present it well then you have just nailed it on the right place. If your presentation skills are poor then please work on them seriously before attempting for any SSB because you are going to require it during the whole process.

Tips: Confidence is the key. Your narration should be clear, loud enough and structured. Never interrupt any other speaker and follow all group discussion techniques during this. Everything is important. You always get enough time to speak.

Soon after the process we were asked to have lunch and this is the right time to gel with people around and know each other. I knew that I did well but still I was extremely nervous because there were more than 150 candidates and the rejection rate on day one is very high.

The results were announced by afternoon and as expected I was there 4 more days to complete my SSB process. Out of 150 only 45 candidates were selected and rest were send back to home on Day 1. We were given new chest numbers and barracks to sleep.

Day – 2

Psychological Tests:

TAT – Thematic Apperception Test

Simple – 12 Slides – 11 Images and one blank slide to your any story that you want.

A slide is displayed for 30 seconds then a bell rings and you get 4 minutes to write your story.

Tips: – Now form day 2 the serious stuff starts. During the 30 second time do not start forming a story, rather look at the picture carefully pay attention to every detail that is displayed in the picture. Your story is expected to have all necessities of effective writing.

The story should be structured, crisp, concise and complete. Avoid simple grammatical mistakes and make a proper story line that makes some sense. Always remember that a psychologist reads this story to understand your psychology and if your stories are cooked up and not original ideas then there is no way out. “Please write your original ideas only”. They need to decide what kind of a person you are so don’t confuse.

Always remember the blank story and try to make it simple and related to your life. Psychologists are looking to get into your personality and decide for your recommendations, so give them a proper room to explore you.

WAT – Word Association Test

60 words – 15 seconds for each word to read and then write a sentence including that word.

Tips: Read the word carefully and do not miss any word.

Make simple and small sentences.

Practice more and more to be very efficient in this exercise because it is actually very difficult to attempt all 60 words.

Remember the sequence. Sometimes people read word no. 15 and write it against word no. 16 in the sheet and this can be the most stupid mistake one can do.

 SRT – Situation Reaction Test

60 Situations and 30 minutes.

Each situation is a problem related to day to day life and the objective behind this test is to check that how quick and practical solutions you give in adverse situations.

It checks your problem solving skills. Always remember that you are not a super human or Rajnikant. You need to give practical solutions to the problems. Do not fabricate your responses. This test checks your common sense and reasoning abilities.

Self- Description

You need to write Parent’s opinion, Teachers opinion, Friends opinion and your self-opinion. Although there is a time limit but still they give you enough time for this.

Well I should not say it but please practice it very well before you approach for any SSB. I believe this is the baseline for any psychologist to give a call for you. Based on this he will judge you and your answers to see if they are genuine or just cooked up stories that you have literally mugged.  Even in interview this sheet is extremely important. In this test only originality can lead you.

With this the hectic day 2 end and you need to surrender all your mobile phones or any other electronic devices that you carry.

Day – 3  GTO -1/ Interview

Well depending on the time and availability either your interview can be scheduled on day 3 or day 4. My interview was on day 4 so I will go with the GTO process first.

This was most exciting part for me. Yepiiii – I was so excited for my GTO that I couldn’t hold to get on the ground and start the tasks.

Simple tips:

It is a group task so don’t be ‘James Bond’ as if you know everything and give equal chances to everyone.

Help everyone in the group and be involved – don’t be lost.

Be super active and show a positive body language to the GTO officer.

Don’t try to prove yourself as a leader, if you have it in you the group will automatically accept your leadership.

Climbing on a 9ft wall and crossing the 8ft ditch is not easy please be very attentive else you may seriously hurt yourself.

Snake race was so daam good. I kept the mane of my Team as SPARTANS!!! And when we did the Spartan ahoooooo ahooo together – OMG that was simply amazing and the GTO was really impressed by the idea.

Day 4 – GTO -2 & Interview

Well Interviews make me really nervous and this one was the very important for me. My interview lasted for about 45minutes. Yes, I said 45 minutes and the interviewer asked me almost everything. Like even my relationships, what all I gift her, who pays for the bills, how do I treat my brother, what is the width and length of an Olympic size swimming poll, all neighboring countries that share border with India, all ranks of all three defense forces and what not. My experience of the interview was great. He asked me about Indian economy, the problems of European Union etc.….

Day 5 – Conference

Ahhhh finally the day has come that was long awaited and to our surprise the CNC – chief of naval staff himself was there on a visit to INS Agrani and he was sitting in my conference round. OMG I was so nervous. There was a panel of atleast 10 Navy offices in front of me and they started asking questions like, the meaning of my name, the solutions of European Union crisis and the Pros and Cons of GST if implemented in India.

When the results were out only 2 Candidates were selected out of the 150 that approached the SSB on day 1. I can never explain the feeling when a sailor came out and said Chest no. 23 speak your name loudly and Spell it and it stood up and with all my energy said MADHUSUDAN PANDIT sir, it was  Loud enough that I can hear it for years to come.

All other candidates were send back home and I said goodbye to all my friends that I made there. Only 2 of us stayed back and we need to report to INS Sanjeevini in Cochin next day. A white color Gypsy came to escort us till the railway station and I was so happy with the experience that for first time a got a railway ticket that described – For Soldiers.

Well life is not so easy and as I said earlier, it can take a U turn at any time. I got rejected in Medicals due to Cubitus valgus and Genu Recurvatum. Just in few seconds all my happiness was gone because of something that I couldn’t help. That was the day that made me deeply believe in destiny and I wasn’t able to complete my dream because of a tiny natural ailment. I was an athlete and a National level Hockey player. I never ever considered myself unfit for anything but just a 10 degree out of elbow can destroy all your dreams.

No regrets! – Naseeb m nahi tha jo humko mila nahi. But that 5 day experience was so overwhelming that I can never forget even a single moment of that in my entire life. The happiness and proud feeling is that I made it and I was recommended for the defense forces.

First Attack of its Kind: Nagrota Attackers Used Silencer-Fitted Weapons

Nagrota attack was the latest attack on an Army camp. An eye-opening news in this regard unfolded that the terrorists used a silencer-fitted weapon to kill a sentry before gaining entry into the army premises.

During this attack, three attackers had infiltrated into India from across the international border at Hiranagar in Kathua district of Jammu region.

This tactic was adopted by the attackers for the FIRST TIME in the troubled state to sneak into the camp from the rear side which had thick vegetation.

After entering, one of the terrorists fired at the sentry using a silencer-fitted weapon, official sources said.

As someone noticed the fall of the sentry, panic gripped the Army camp, which houses an artillery unit having the presence of families of soldiers. Soon firing erupted.

The sources said night illuminators were fired to locate the terrorists who had by then entered an adjacent two-storey building where families of soldiers were staying.

Anticipating a hostage-like situation, the Army troops with the help of para-commandos rescued the women and children first before launching a final onslaught on the terrorists.

Drones were pressed into the service which helped the snipers eliminate the terrorists inside the camp.

Seven Army personnel, including two officers, were killed in the attack by the three terrorists, who were also eliminated in the counteroffensive which lasted nearly four hours.

The security agencies had recovered an iCom wireless set near a tree in Hirnagar that matched the frequency of the sets carried by the militants.

Not ruling out the possibility of local assistance being provided to the terrorists, sources said they had possibly entered into India on the night of November 28-29 and travelled a distance of 78 km to the Army camp using a well-connected national highway before mounting the assault in the morning.

Initially, it was speculated that the terrorists could have travelled to the Army camp from Kashmir, a possibility that was rejected after the vehicular movement was scrutinised from the CCTVs installed at vantage points along the national highway linking the Valley to the rest of the country.

There were some intelligence leads suggesting that a militant sympathiser from Poonch had ferried the terrorists to the Army camp.

BSF officials had initially rejected suggestions that terrorists entered through the international border but after the recovery of the wireless set, they started their internal probe. The case is now being probed by National Investigation Agency (NIA)

In Numbers: Indian Military’s Shortage of Officers & Premature Retirements

0
premature retirements

Recently, a leaked note from Indian Navy pointed on the fact that the number of officers opting for premature retirement in the Navy is maximum this year since 2009. Not only this, it came to our knowledge that the officers in all the three services of the military are opting for premature retirement, i.e. retirement before the age of their superannuation.

So, here we bring you the numbers of the shortage of officers in the Indian military and the number of officers opting for premature retirement.

premature retirements

Army:

There is a shortage of about 8,671 officers in the Army, that means 23% of the total sanctioned strength of 49,833 officers.

The Army currently has 41,162 officers, having to make do with a shortfall of officers mostly at the junior level, which is operationally critical.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the number of premature retirements in the Army was 221 in 2013, 120 in 2014 and 62 in 2015. This figure till the end of May this year has increased to 64 now.

Navy:

In Navy, there are 1,518 officers short, or 17% of its authorised strength of 11,384. The Navy has 9,866 officers currently serving in the force.

In the Navy, the retirements from 2013-15 were 96, 91 and 68, which went up to 89 in July this year.

Compare this to 69 cases in 2015, 91 in 2014, 96 in 2013, 132 in 2012, 122 in 2011, 114 in 2010 and 125 in 2009. This was the highest since 2009!

Air Force:

But in Air Force, the number is very low – a mere 29 officers short, or 4% of its strength.

The Air Force reported no deficiency of officers last year.

The premature retirement figures for the Air Force are 131, 108 and 59, with the number of officers opting out early this year shooting up to 109 till the beginning of this month.

The Iconic Gypsy Of Indian Military To Be Replaced By Tata Safari Storme

The much served Maruti Suzuki Gypsy of Indian Army will soon stop serving the forces. The Indian Army has decided to procure 30,000 units of Tata Safari Storme over the next few years to replace the entire fleet of Maruti Gypsy.

The Gypsy has served Indian Armed Forces for over 25 years now. The major drawback of Gypsy is it doesn’t have a Diesel engine.

The Army has selected the Tata Safari Storme from the two shortlisted SUVs. The another one is the Mahindra Scorpio. The Safari Storme was zeroed in due to a lower bid by Tata Motors.

The two vehicles have been shortlisted after having conducted rigorous technical tests on a set of vehicles. These tests were conducted in various environments, which put to test various attributes of the vehicles in challenging conditions.

The Army have reportedly placed an initial order of 3,198 vehicles with Tata Motors. This will be Tata Motors’ second important deal with our Army in 2016. The company earlier bagged a ₹1,300 crore order for supplying high-mobility military trucks to the army.

History Of Gypsy:

The Gypsy was inducted into the Army in 1991. It has proved its mantle by successfully playing varied roles.

The Maruti Gypsy has been the most potent choice given its driveability across varied terrains, low cost of ownership and sturdy build.

The Gypsy has won many hearts due to its great off-road capabilities, low cost of maintenance and high reliability.

However, a low fuel efficiency and less petrol filling stations in remote areas like high altitudes have proven to be quite a drawback.

Criteria For Choosing Safari Storme:

The Safari Storme has a Diesel engine that’s not very fuel-thirsty.

It has a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo Diesel that pumps out 154 BHP and 400 Nm. It comes paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. It also offers a shift-on-fly 4×4 system from Borg Warner.

Tata is yet to announce the details of the Army-spec Storme. However, it’s likely to get panniers, auxiliary lights and some more additions. It is also likely to get extra structural reinforcements.indian-army-tata-strome

Conclusion:

More than 30,000 Gipsies currently being used by the Armed Forces will be phased out and replaced by the Safari Storme over the next few years. The Gypsy will still be available for civilian use and can be booked at an authorised Maruti Suzuki dealership by paying the entire cost of the vehicle. Currently, the Gypsy retails for roughly Rs. 7.5 Lakh.

IMA Passing Out Parade 10 Dec 2016: IMA POP

0
ima-pop-dec-2016-9

Under a cloud speckled winter sky with the historic Chetwode building in the background, 401 cadets took part in the Passing Out Parade at the Indian Military Academy or IMA in Dehradun today. Along with them were 53 foreign cadets from eight friendly nations.

Rose petals were showered from a chopper, carpeting the institute’s tarmac drill square.

The gentlemen Cadets were immaculate in their turnout and the excellent drill movements indicated a high level of motivation, pride and cohesion achieved by them during their training at IMA.

The Reviewing Officer at the Parade was an alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy, Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Narinder Pal Singh Hira.

Addressing the gentlemen cadets after reviewing the colourful Passing Out Parade performed by them, Lt Gen Hira said they were privileged to have trained at the IMA, which is considered the best in the field, and asked them to make optimum use of the skills learnt in serving the country.

“You walk into the footsteps of officers who served the country with great courage in 1962 war and the subsequent wars fought in 1965, 1971 and the Kargil war. You should draw inspiration from them. IMA instils the best qualities in its cadets and you should try to make optimum use of them in serving your country,” he said.

The memorable ‘last step’ in the life of every cadet as they cross the Chetwood threshold to become officers of the Army, was captured in cameras of parents, guardians and wardens present at the occasion.

PBOR Entries To Become A Commissioned Officer In Indian Military

0
pbor-entries

Various of our soldiers, sailors and airmen join the Indian military as Non-Commissioned Officers and Junior Commissioned Officers. Most of them even have attended SSBs in their lifetime but could not clear it. Just to support their family among various other reasons, they settle their life becoming NCOs and JCOs, also called PBORs (Person Below Officer Rank). Not that we are degrading the value of PBORs or PBOR Entries, but believe me, when an officer worthy man become an NCO, it says a lot about his tough decision.

My own Ground Training Instructor applied to be an officer, even attended AFSBs but couldn’t make it. He wanted to be a literature, but at the same time, he needed to support his family financially, so joined the Air Force as an airman. Not sure of him, but we do feel a void in his dreams. This post is dedicated to you, sir.

So, there are various entries through which a PBOR can become an Officer in Indian Military. Although you cannot become a Commissioned Officer in the Air Force being a PBOR, you can join the Army as a Commissioned Officer from the Air Force. Unlike this, a PBOR in the Navy can become a Commissioned Officer in the Navy but he cannot join the Army. To sum up here’s a representation:PBOR Entries

Although in service, a PBOR has to write an exam to be eligible to attend SSB for the Officer entry. They can also write subsequent exams like CDSE after informing their Commanding Officers. Let’s look at them One by One:

PBOR Entries To become a CO through Soldier in Army or Airman in Air Force:

There are three schemes in this offered to worthy Army Soldier and Air Force Airmen. Soldier/Airmen with higher education qualification NCC certificate and sports achievement are given weightage in selection process:

  1. ACC (Army Cadet College):
  • Education Requirement: 10+2
  • Service Requirements: Minimum Service 2 Years of service in the Army/Air Force
  • Training: Four Years (Three Years in ACC Wing and one Year at IMA)
  • Degree Remark: Graduate Degree from ACC Wing
  • Age: 26 years
  • Marital Status: Married or Unmarried
  1. SCO (Special Commissioned Officers):

  • Service Requirements: Minimum Service of 5 years in Army/Sgt and Above for Air Force
  • Training: One year at IMA
  • Age: 27-32 years
  • Marital Status: Married or Unmarried

  • Service Requirements: Minimum service 10 years in Army/ Sgt and Above for Air Force
  • Training Academy: Four weeks at OTA
  • Age: 32-40 Years (45 yrs for Engineers & 45 yrs for IOB)
  • Marital Status: Married or Unmarried
PBOR Entries To become a CO through Seaman in Navy:

Sailors who possess unique leadership qualities and fulfil requisite conditions in terms of age, education etc can aspire to become Commissioned Officer in the Navy through Commission Worthy (CW) scheme and Special Duties (SD) scheme. Such officer can aspire to Command Ships and Units and even rise to become Admirals! That is Navy’s way of giving an opportunity to deserving few who for some unforeseen reasons could not make it to the officer rank. So a sailor can become a commissioned officer through CW entry.

Although exact eligibility criteria and service requirements are unknown for CW and SD schemes, number of PBORs including Jawans promoted to Senior Officers post in the three services of the Armed Forces during 2007-2009 is as under:

Year Army* Air Force Navy
Commission Worthy Scheme Special Duty List Scheme
2007 159 94 54 82
2008 139 64
2009 205 59

* Excluding Army Medical Corps and Army Dental Corps
