‘Pakistan can never defeat India’ – as long as the Sikhs fight for India

0
sikh-regiment

The Sikhs, the ferocious Sikhs that behaved like hungry lions on the field were like benevolent guardians in the camps. They slept hungry themselves but gave their food to the prisoners.

“Pakistan can never defeat India”, the Italian remarked.

That morning in May 1999, on an official trip to Italy, as I had switched on the BBC World News, I had heard the announcement that Indian Air Force had started an offensive on the Kargil peaks and there were fears of a full-fledged war with Pakistan. What had till now been known as a minor incursion by infiltrators was now threatening to engulf the two nations into a suicidal war. My friend and I had begun our usual tour of the fair; visiting booths of major companies.

I vividly remember that stall, and the company owner sitting stylishly having a chat with his clients. These Italians sure are one stylish lot. Brown shoes and a red golf cap. I still have’nt got over my bias for brown shoes acquired during those trips to Italy.

As we got on with our promotional lecture the conversation veered off to the Kargil news.

“Pakistan can never defeat India”, he suddenly remarked.

“Oh yes”, we said, “Of Course, we have a bigger army”, we said proudly.

“Oh No!, you got it wrong”, said the Italian

“Is that so? How?”

“You know about Sikhs?”, he asked.

“Of course”, I said, “I am a Sikh”

“Oh, are you?”, he remarked with a surprise, as he suddenly got up from his seat, took off his red cap, “Salute’”, he said in his strong Italian accent; even as he asked me as to why I was not wearing the Sikh turban. I grinned sheepishly in response.

“Hats off, my Sikh friend; you don’t know why Pakistan can never defeat India? It cannot defeat India as long as the Sikhs fight for India.”

We were surprised by his reaction. And we asked him as to how he knew about Sikhs and tried to find out the story behind his view.

And then he started speaking animatedly. “My Grandpapa was in Mussolini’s army in World War-II. And he used to tell me a story. He told me that they were winning the war as they moved into Eastern Africa. They won many battles against the British. And then the British brought a regiment of fierce looking warriors. Men that looked like ferocious animals when in battle, the Sikhs. Their war-cry was so frightening that the Italian army used to shiver when it sounded. They attacked with their artillery; when they finished their artillery fire they attacked with their guns; when they finished their bullets they fought with bayonets; and when their bayonets were snatched they fought with knives; and then even as they were bleeding they fought with bare hands.”sikh-regiment

I could see the Italian getting more and more excited as he recited the story. He was moving his hands around in the air and acting the part. “My Grandpa used to say that it was the Sikhs that turned the war around. They routed their enemy wherever they went.

“Finally, my Grandpa was captured by the Sikh regiment”, he said. “He was a Prisoner of War, with limited canteen. Even water was scarce. The Sikhs, the ferocious Sikhs that behaved like hungry lions on the field were like benevolent guardians in the camps. They slept hungry themselves but gave their food to the prisoners. They gave them so much respect and love that my Grandpapa used to say that he had never seen men like the Sikhs. So gallant in war and so gracious in victory.”

“As I grew up, my grandpapa inspired me with stories of Sikhs and asked me to meet some Sikhs if I wanted to be a man. So I went to meet Sikhs in India. I roamed in the Punjab, went to the temples and met many.”

“But, I wanted to see the Sikh Army in Action. So I went to your parade, that big parade in New Delhi, where all regiments of the Indian army march in glory. The parade was magnificient, the Indian army marching proudly, regiment after regiment.” he remarked as he took a book in his hand and moved it smoothly across the table in one straight line he said “this is how smoothly each regiment moved, like one unit”

“And then in the distance, I saw the Sikhs”, he said, as he started moving the book across the table. “Boom” he shouted as I saw the book go up an inch, “Boom”, as it went down, even as it moved across in one straight line and he did the entire stretch of the table. “This is how the Sikhs marched, boom, boom, moving like a storm across the road, so disciplined moving like one unit, yet looking so gallant and brave. I have seen the Germans marching, I have seen the march-past of the Russians, but I have never seen an army marching the way the Sikhs do.” He continued for a few more minutes with anecdotes of his grandpa’s and his interaction with Sikhs, as he hammered in the fact that Sikhs were the best fighting force in the world.

“So, my friend, you see. Pakistan can never defeat India, as long as the Sikhs fight for India.”

Postscript:

This incident has stayed with me for over fifteen years now, and I recount it today not in bravado as a fellow Sikh, but as something that needed to be told as an indicator of the impact Sikhs have on people, both in their bravery and in their graciousness; and as a reminder to us Indians.

Sikhs make up 10% of all ranks in the Indian Army, though Sikhs form only 2% of the Indian population.

After 1984, there was an experiment by Gen Vaidya to do away exclusivity, with a company each of Dogras, Garhwalis and South Indians in the Sikh Regiment. The exclusivity was however later restored.

I read an article today from the ‘Telegraph’ of UK that the Britishers were planning to create a ‘Sikh Regiment’ in the British Army.

Perhaps the Britishers know something we Indians seem to be forgetting.

Clearing Seven Myths Of SSB Interview

0
AFSB centre

Aspirants worry a lot about what they hear from different sources, their friends and other online resources where everyone says different things about the process of SSB. One need to understand that whatever you hear about SSB Interview is not always the truth. Different resources have different opinions and hence it would be intelligent to clear few myths. Spending five days in that environment which shows you a bit of the lifestyle of an officer gives you energy that this is the life that a real aspirant wants. Let’s see what are the myths and the realities:

1. You are under observation 24*7 for five days

This is true that you each and every move is studied there by expert officers. But you can relax when you are there in your dorms or while in the mess, but remember an officer must not forget to follow the rules when he is not under observation. So just follow the rules of the place completely.

2. You cannot be in touch with your family

This might be right that your mobiles are submitted in some centres because some centres are official workplaces of the defence people too. But the telephone facility is provided through STD booth and you can call whenever you are free within calling times.

3. Facilities are not good at the centre

All the attendees of SSB Interview are provided with the living accommodation, food facilities which might not be world class but yes you only tell me which selection test provides all the aspirants with these facilities. The food quality is good and you are provided with dorms where you share room with other aspirants. Each one is provided with bedding, almirah also.

4. If you spend more time in conference your selection is sure

This is not true. Time might be taken to discuss various parameters on the candidate and it is nowhere related to the final result. I would only suggest giving your best in every round which will automatically fetch good results. AFSB centre

5. If GTO gives a tough individual task you are high in his eyes

This is partially right but the GTO assesses individual for overall performance as all the rounds are designed to assess full personality of the person. Any single round if accompanied with a good performance might not lead to your recommendation.

6. You should attend all questions in Psychology

Psychology rounds have many subparts and it is a perfect time bound test, so according to me you should try to do all but if not possible to attempt all then give your best shot in whatever you attempt. You will be judged by how you attempt. You will be judged by the quality and not by the quantity. So try accordingly.

7. You can speak whatever you want in Interview if you are smart

Believe me whosoever is judging you are far smarter than you and they will catch you like anything. So be yourself as the same set of question or qualities would be judged by different assessors though different questions and if caught at one place you will be thrown out.

Other myths which make aspirants confuse a bit can be clarified with me. Still If you have any confusion or feel to take individual assessment of personality for olq’s or prepare from your place itself through one to one interaction through my mentoring / counselling program drop me a mail at [email protected] or add me on Fb and drop in a message. It would be a pleasure to help and resolve queries and clear doubts which are more often myths that are present in the mind and that can severely degrade the performance. So just follow the set of norms, be yourself and get selected. It is this simple only.

Use Of Language At SSB

0
ssb interview language to be used

There is always confusion among the aspirants that what should be the appropriate use of language at the SSB centre. Though it is usually told in instructions that one should use restrict the use to only Hindi and English and other languages should not be used. Also if one is using Hindi as an optional language then one should try to restore and come back to English. This is a general set of instructions given to the aspirant’s before any round and one should strictly follow that. At SSB we all know that there are certain rounds in which a discussion needs to be initiated and hence it would need involvement of all the members of the group.

SSB is a place where people from different places participate and they usually cover the entire country, whichever centre you visit for SSB. English being the common language which is understood by all is promoted and hence should be used. Now few aspirants write to me saying that they are weak in English and they become nervous while speaking in English so can Hindi be used. As told earlier, yes definitely it can be used, but in restricted mode only. This rule is made considering the benefit of all so it should be followed as everyone might not understand Hindi and hence it would disturb the environment of the discussion which would thus not facilitate the discussion and might not serve the purpose.ssb interview language to be used

For those aspirants who feel they are not good at it should not feel low. Let me tell you that speaking skills are not a barrier in the selection and if you have OLQ’s and reveal them appropriately no one can stop you from getting selected, so give it a shot. Few people complain that their background is such that they come from Hindi medium and hence never got chance to get an environment of English, so friends don’t worry for that. This information is captured through PIQ form and it would be kept in mind without getting the results affected , so that’s why I say that aspirants should practice hard and work on psychology and personality rather than worrying about the issues which were never in their hand. Although this is considerate but one should always work on the communication as it might help in general also if SSB is left apart.

Body language in SSB is very important and I would deal it in a separate article as it creates a long lasting impression and needs a proper workout. Still If you have any confusion or feel to take individual assessment of personality for olq’s or prepare from your place itself through one to one interaction through my mentoring / counselling program drop me a mail at [email protected] or add me on Fb and drop in a message. Clear the communication barriers and get towards the success journey. Success can only be achieved with hard work and it will definitely be yours.

Is Getting Screened In Really Tough At SSB?

0
screening ssb

People have been wondering what happens on the first day that so many aspirants get rejected and the majority of the lot is eliminated.

Yes accepted that the first day is really very crucial and the people who get selected on this day are only allowed to reveal their full potential but there are many things that one must keep in mind and ensure his selection at the screening round of SSB.

Lecturette Topics eBook SSBCrack

The myths that the aspirants are surrounded with are:

  • I spoke so many times in GD and yet I was rejected and the person who was just smiling was selected.
  • People who used Hindi got selected while I used really versed language and I was rejected.
  • I started the GD and spoke two to three times yet I am rejected.
  • My story narration was good and I performed descent in the GD yet I don’t understand why I am rejected.

I have been receiving these things in my mail as queries that generally bother the aspirants. Now let me make it very clear that first of all these myths need to be sorted and you should not believe in all these things. Another thing is that one needs to understand that screening GD is not similar to other GD that people usually give in placement activities.

OIR Test eBook SSBCrack

The needs of all organizations are really different and one needs to accept that. Hence, different things are evaluated in different places. Thus, different exams require different preparation. If one goes with the same mindset, selection could be tough. So try to understand and work on your psychology and personality as these are the things that are evaluated on the first day.

At SSB things are judged psychologically where one needs to prove that he or she has the potential to become an officer and OLQs are being evaluated. So how to perform well?

  • Take things positively at SSB and do not go with pre-conceived notions. Every start should be a fresh start.
  • Introspect deeply before appearing for SSB as that can only save one from getting know-how about yourself and performing to the fullest there.
  • Remember not to fool anyone and prepare sincerely for your dream.
  • If you are looking for preparation, always see a place where you would be individually guided as SSB is all about an individual personality and if taught in large chunks one can miss important aspects. Also in such places, individualistic personality is lost.
  • Get ready with your profiles so that you know what you have and what needs to be improved on. Once this is done then the practice set can be taken and things will definitely move in the right direction.

Why Ajit Doval Is The Best NSA Chief India Could Ever Get

1
Intelligence Bureau (IB) AJIT DOVAL

When I first met him in his Lutyen’s Delhi office days after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, on 21 May, 1991, Ajit Doval was a Deputy Director of the Intelligence Bureau, in-charge of operations. The office building, an imposing white palatial property, still continues to be the operations hub for the IB, though I should refrain from giving its exact address for obvious security reasons.

As I sat opposite Doval, with a huge table between us, he noticed that I was taking stock of his room. He asked me: “Do you see anything odd here in this room?”

My unspoken reactions were naturally that of a perplexed young man whose mind had been completely read inside out by his host.

“Not really,” I sputtered, gingerly.

Doval puffed from a cigar (he is a chimney, when it comes to smoking!) and then said: “OK, I will tell you what it is.”

I leaned forward to the extent the obstructing table would allow as Doval took a deep breath. It was a signal, as I would know during my thousands of interactions with Doval all these years, that he was about to be unplugged.

“Have you noticed that there are no wires in this room?” Doval said. It was obvious that he was not asking me, but telling me.

And even before I could ask why, the real gems started coming from him. “Wires are a source of worry, the most obvious tools for our enemies who would do anything to bug or eavesdrop us. Without wires they can do nothing. That’s why this room is completely without any wires.”Intelligence Bureau (IB) AJIT DOVAL

Today it may sound a bit odd and out of place; not 23 years ago. Those were the Doordarshan times, the MTNL times, the DESU times (the last one, only a hardcore Delhiite like me would relate to). Those were the days when having a phone connection (landline, of course) itself used to be a status symbol.

But forget about the economic outlook of the nation at that time, this was my first lesson in counter-terrorism.

Now cut to 30 May, 2014, the day when Doval, a former chief of the Intelligence Bureau (IB), was appointed as National Security Advisor (NSA) to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He retired as the IB chief in January 2005. Incidentally, though he is known to be close to the BJP and BJP patriarch LK Advani, he was appointed as the IB chief during the UPA 1.

Doval’s appointment should send jitters to Pakistan, particularly the likes of Dawood Ibrahim, Hafiz Saeed and Sayeed Salahuddin.

This crucial appointment may well be a sneak peek into Modi’s upcoming plans for Pakistan, particularly the terror apparatus that has been flourishing there for decades.

The Pakistanis are not dumb either and have already played their chess moves with regard to their strategic assets named above. That is why Dawood Ibrahim went underground immediately after Modi swept to power and days before he was sworn in as India’s 15th Prime Minister.

One can look forward to more Pakistan-centric news dominating the Indian media in the near future. No, this won’t be about the usual sugar-coated diplomatic charade. Most likely, it would pertain to the ‘breaking news’ category.

Well, how and why, I should not pre-judge or predict. But those who know something about the intelligence-craft would find my statement pregnant.

Most likely, Pakistani military establishment must be on the same page and must be aware of my hints.

Interestingly, Doval’s appointment preceded Jamait-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, founder of India’s biggest blood-sucker Lashkar-e-Toiba, going ballistic hours before and declaring “jihad” against India in front of a crowd of about ten thousand people he led in the heart of Pakistan.

Saeed’s shenanigans have not gone unnoticed by Doval.

Having known Doval from close quarters for such a long time and having interacted closely with top intelligence honchos of India in the past quarter century, I can say one thing with a very high degree of confidence. Doval is the best NSA India could have ever got.

No, it is not because that he has been a hardcore operations man of the IB for decades. No, it is not because that as a master of disguises he melted into whichever theater he deployed in – the northeast or Punjab or Pakistan – he came up with astounding results.

Of course, all this is true. But that alone is not his USP.

Doval was the man who dared to sneak deep into Pakistan at the risk of his life and remained in that country incognito for years, delivering virtually real time intelligence on Pakistan’s Kahuta nuclear plant.

But then his capability is over and above all this. He is a shrewd man of action who thinks and a thinking man who acts. This is a deadly combination. He has the capability of thinking out of the box and planning daredevil operations with surgical precision.

This is what Modi needs from him. Inevitably, Pakistan would figure highest on Doval’s mind.

Here is a clue. One would do well to keep a watch on major India-baiters based in Pakistan – Dawood, Hafiz Saeed and Salahuddin.

Significantly, I understand that Doval will have a free hand in navigating India’s national security which has been moribund for years.

These are the interesting times. These are the action times. Or shall we say, these are the Ajit Doval times?

Story Of Maj DP Singh Story Will Motivate You

After completing my Cdo course with an injured knee in 1998, I was on leave to undergo knee surgery for ACL tear. In Mar 99, I joined unit and straight away went on PP6 in Munawar Tawi area of 10 Div. I was still under physiotherepy which I could never complete for the prescribed duration courtesy Op Vijay.

It started in the month of May and things got very hot in 10 Div area too. On the fatefull day of 15th July 99, I came under firing of mortar and got severely injured. Profusely bleeding all over the body when I reached hospital I was decelared dead by the surgical specialist. As the luck would have another doctor, Anesthetic, was present there at that moment, who had a look at me and could revive me.

Since then, till Nov 2009, it took me ten full years to regain my ability back for which I was famous among my coursmates in IMA as I use to be the first one to sleep in the outdoor classes and come back in first five, when sent on round the temple to sit and relax while others were still running.Story Of Maj DP Singh Story Will Motivate You

It all started with my craze of going for Rally sports. During my army days also I was passionate about rally sports but could never get chance to explore that area much as I was denied entry into such adventures owing to my medical condition. Once out, I began to explore it more, however as its an expensive sport, I needed money and sponsors. It was the hunt for sponsors which forced me to prove my worth as an individual first as whomsoever I met in this regard, frowned on me because of my physical status. During that period I came across the advertisment of Airtel Delhi Half Marathon to be happened in Nov 09 and I enrolled for it.maj dp singh

Month of oct in delhi is neither cold nor hot, in a way, ideal to get up early and go for jogging. First day, I donned the jogging suit and went out on road, started with a normal walk for about 2 kms. Long way to cover in next 14 days but there was some spirit, spirit of proving my worth again, spirit of doing something worth after a long. And thus every day I started getting up early and going for jog.

Within few days, I was able to hop run for about 4 to 5 kms. Sweating out like this after about 9 yrs was a feeling of elation. The max upto which I went during practise session was mere 9 kms. I wanted to do about 14 to 15 kms but in between there were various challenges like, coming back late from office and not able to complete the sleep to get up early, upset stomach or some other commitments in which I went out of delhi. Controling stomach was biggest challenge as due to injury twice my stomach underwent laprotomy in order to remove the intenstinal adhesion. But after consulting a doctor I had a medicine to ease out this trouble.

As I was not able to complete the mark of 14 km in practise so, I was not sure whether I should attempt the run or not, there was some element of confusion. But I guess its normal to have such doubt before any test because this only makes you give your best.

Though I had prepared myself by buying new jogging shoes which will give me better grip and cushion to my left foot, toe and heel but toe and heel had given me piercing pain many a times while practise session and intolerable pain while doing the frist marathon.

Early morning on the day of marathon, I got up at around 4, cleaned my bowl well and had my daily diet of (anjeer, kishmiss, khazoor and badaam) first thing in the morning. Mind was still confused whether to go for run or sleep again. For about five minutes I was confused, then suddenly I made up my mind to reach at starting point atleast before the half marathon starts and let things to happen on its own. That was perhaps the moment of Rubicon, because after that not going ahead with run never struck me. I reached there on venue and wore my chest number. Public was amazed to see a one leg guy getting ready but that was giving me strenght rather. While I was standing next to gate in the holding area, I met a 75 yrs old guy with his friend. He was an athlete of his times and was there to run half marathon. I touched his feet and he wished me good luck for the run. That was the moment when even the iota of doubt I had at the back of mind also got washed away.

And rest is history now, since 2009, I have completed three consecutive half marthons at Delhi and Mumbai both. Amazingly, improving time by 15 min in every run. My present prosthesis has over lived its life of 5 yrs by more the double and its giving me trouble since last 3 yrs but some how I could manage my runs without getting bogged down by even this restraint. I am now trying to get a new prosthesis specially designed for running purpose with an aim to explore marathons outside India too. The fact that Limca book of records has published my attempt as maiden attempt in India and thus a record has given me a further push to take it forward.

LECTURETTE – Women Empowerment

1
LECTURATE-WOMEN-EMPOWERMENT

India is a nation where women are equalized with the goddess. According to the Vedas, they are the base of the human race. A woman plays an important role in maintaining an entire family and sometimes the whole nation (former President Pratibha Patil). They have proved themselves in almost all fields and sectors. But their further empowerment is a matter of concern for the nation. Previous steps taken by government have strong impact on the situation. But the conditions are still worst in some areas, like safety of women is big point of concern for the government. India’s much praised tourism field that contributes in nation’s GDP has been affected a lot because of the unsafe environment for women India.

What does it mean?

The term women empowerment means an overall improvement of women. Here the term ‘overall’ means human rights, legal and education rights of women along with social enhancement of women. A completely safe and protected environment for women is a necessity of the country. The sense of Freedom is also a part of empowering the women.

Current status of Women

Acid attacks, rape, molestation, kidnapping and several other crimes have filled columns of newspapers. Several cases of the horrific attempt of rape and acid attacks have shivered the nation. Even molestation cases have also been flooded the media. Article 39D makes it mandatory for payment of equal money for same work done by any woman. Dowry Prohibition Act, Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, Sexual Harassment of Women at workplace Act are the laws framed by the government to safeguard the women in India. According to a study, it is revealed that women are easily trainable and are catchier than men. 1/3 seats of panchayat are reserved for women and 33% of seats of Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly are reserved for women.LECTURATE-WOMEN-EMPOWERMENT

Steps were taken to improve the status

Well, according to the current scenario more tough rules and laws are required for overcoming the crimes and more broad schemes and plans can power up the women in this nation. Several loopholes in law make the prosecution more complicated. Recently launched schemes like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Bhagyashri Yojna and some other were launched widening the gate for women in the social involvement. Another challenge for India is to make the women population a part of development. Women have proved several good results (Arundhati Batachrya, Indra Gandhi, etc). Not only this, our cultural and traditional values also made some complication in the task. These need to be changed a bit to release women form the traps.

Conclusion

“We all cannot succeed if half of us are held back” the golden words by Malala Yousafzai, describes the reality of the world. The place of women in the country need some focus and attention from government. The situation has changed a lot, many amendments and new laws have enhanced the condition. Some more steps in this area are required to make India a safe place for women. The development of the nation is only possible when communal efforts will be made.
