Everything About ‘Being Merit Out’

1
ssb interview merit list

The closer you get to your goal, the more it hurts if you cannot achieve it. Being merit out brings immense pain and disappointment. Once you get screened out you feel bad, if you are not recommended you feel worse, but being merit out leaves you with a worst feeling (of course relegation and suspense can’t be compared). With the current scenario of selection, there is a huge number of increase in the merit out cases. The level of candidates has risen to a great deal, which matches up to the standards of the forces, so there are many candidates who get recommended, but due to constraints all can’t be taken in for training.

What is merit out?

The candidates, who get recommended in SSB, have to compete on an all India level based on their scores in SSB (and written in case the entry is not direct). The vacancies are limited and hence few are taken in for the final training and few are not. This is decided based on the merit list given by the recruitment center, which has candidates who have higher score. So comes the case of being merit out.

ssb interview merit list

Why Merit Out?

As mentioned above the vacancies for every entry is limited. So there may be more candidates who are recommended from a center, but there might be lesser number of vacancies. Hence the candidates who score lesser marks are not taken in the final merit. Being recommended just means that you are fit for the forces, it will not guarantee your final admission in the academy. Candidates may feel that there are so many news about the shortage of officers in the forces. Then too why there are cases of merit outs? This is so because the capacities of training academies are limited, they have a limited resources to train limited candidates, hence this determines the vacancy. Also the requirement in that department might be limited for which you apply.

How to ensure being merit in?

Merit is a collective score of your performance in the SSB and written. In case of direct entries, it is only SSB. The key to success here is to score as much as possible. You need to first understand where you can score for sure. In psychological tests there is no idea that on what basis the marks are given, in interview also, it is dependent on the interviewer, and so is in few tasks in the Groups Tasks. So in order to score marks, first you need to score as much as possible in the written tests. Then you need to try and score as much as possible in the Officers Intelligent and Rating Test, in the screening, as its marks are added in the final merit list. Then you get a chance to score in the Individual Obstacle in the group tests. These are a few places where you can get calculated marks, so make sure you perform well in them.

Being merit out is not the end of the world. You definitely deserve, that is why you were chosen. Don’t give up hope and keep trying.

Conversation Starters in SSB

Your communication skills play a major role in inclining your personality to the developed zone. A major part of the communication skills is your ability to interact and talk with an ease with others. If you can easily associate with others, then definitely you can influence them. Influencing is not a negative thing here, by influencing we mean, developing a good relationship. Having a good communication skill helps in developing a good relation with your team members, this will certainly help you a great deal in the group tasks. Since group tasks form a major part of the selection process hence it is in your favor if you perform well in these tasks. The first step in the process of an effective communication is striking a conversation.

It is a hard task to see so many unknown faces and easily get adapted to them. It is difficult to find a suitable way to break the ice with other people and strike a conversation. So here we are with some clues with which you can start a conversation, and build up a good relationship with the other candidates at SSB.
  • Scene 1: Railway Station: This is the place where you’ll see the maximum crowd of candidates. You find certainly difficult to decide whom to go to and talk. Repeaters might have acquaintance whom they have met in other SSB’s, but for freshers its an entirely new thing. There are parnts also accompanying to some candidates. Just take a while to look around. You’ll find somebody exactly like you, looking for somebody to talk to. Its better to be separated from your parents and get ready for an independent venture at this point of time. Simply go near a person standing alone, or to a group nearby, ask them whether they are for SSB, and you’ll see words flowing dramatically!
    Conversation Starters in SSB
  • Scene 2: Screening: Here it is important to build up a conversation before the screening. It is important because you are going to have a GD in next few minutes. And non-friendly GD are not very popular, not something you would like to attend. Pop up a polo, or Tic Tac, they are refreshments to be shared! Ask people around to have, then gradually say that let us have a peaceful GD inside, it’ll be beneficial for all if everybody gets a chance to speak. Of course nobody is going to follow this advice, but you have spoken, you have opened up, and you have taken the initiative, so who’s the leader?
  • Scene 3: Your group: This is the easiest of all. You get a chance to live with your group after screening, probably in the same room, for days. Conversation flows. Ask about their family, education and friends. Help your group mates whenever they need you, especially in case of knowledge about something. Be considerate. Go for meals together to the mess. Help each other in preparing for the tasks. You’ll not have to think twice before getting along with your group mates. Booking out together to check out the city is helpful too.

Olive Greens – Your Companion In The Journey Towards Success

0

‘Leadership’ – a Cardinal Ingredient During SSB Selection Process. During SSB, all the three assessors, through their respective tools of testing i.e. psychological tests, GTO tasks and interaction by IO during Personal Interview, endeavour to ascertain the leadership potential of the candidate. The intellectual ability, social warmth & people’s skills, resilient resolve and dynamism of the candidate automatically get divulged as he/she performs over various tasks of testing, and these are of course the true tenets of a ‘Leader’. Some of the personality attributes essential to be a leader and a group effective person are in-born and are part of our DNA, while some traits are inculcated by a person through the interplay with the environment in which he/she was nurtured and grew up. Hence, the first requirement while preparing for SSB is to get to know as to what these ingredients are, second requirement is to know what level of those ingredients you already possess and the last requirement is to know how to fill up the gap through a focused ‘Action Plan’ to acquire the deficient leadership ingredients.

How Coached Thought Process or “Put on” Leaders  are Identified by Assessors?

  • Coached thought process is reflected through, shallow preconceived information and low level of general awareness, besides, being insensitive towards others and poor social graces.
  • Some coached candidates who are very well informed, many times develop a superior attitude and are abrasive while interacting with others and may lack tact and people’s skills.
  • Such candidates write practiced stories, with utter disregard to the stimulus (pictures) shown and having stereo typed themes, that are not portraying your actual personality as reflected through other psych tests and PIQ.
  • Conflicting responses of behaviour between various psych tests and  amongst  psych tests, GTO series & Interview, because of borrowed thoughts that the coaching academy imposed on your mind.
  • Losing originality of thinking and expression and giving only ‘coached responses’ that do not conform to your actual personality, which get highlighted and are exhibited through some of the non-coached responses given by the candidate.
  • Behaving unnaturally during various tasks, as the true self keep emerging from behind the shadow of the coached persona that the candidate is trying to hide.
  • Demonstrating coached ideas during GTO series, i.e. applying a high level or difficult idea when a very simple idea was possible.
  • Giving preconceived views and speaking like a parrot with no spontaneity in the answers given to the interviewing officer.

Who Needs Training?

  • Candidates with low general awareness, poor communication skills, stage fright, poor interpersonal relationship building skills and low self-esteem.
  • Candidates who did not get the opportunity to learn the correct social graces and people’s skills. (Includes, dress sense, posture, tact to deal with others, basic civic sense and positive mannerism).
  • Low practical work sense for candidates who got fewer opportunities in participation in outdoor activities and hands on practical tasks in routine life.
  • Candidates who have not participated in interactive activities frequently and lack the skill to be visible in a positive manner in group activity.
  • Some very bright candidates , with  minor undesirable kinks in their social attributes are unable to clear SSB even after repeated attempts, need help to calibrate that portion of their exhibited behaviour.
  • Candidates with poor physical and mental stamina would need guidance to improve their physical standards.

How Olive Greens Caters to Above Requirements of Training ?

  • The complete team of Olive Greens (8 Officers) has been ex-assessors, at various SSBs for 3-4 years duration.
  • The feedback from previously trained students, in terms of their quality and passion for training, speaks volumes of their dedication and commitment to train the aspirants. (Many coaching academies have hired their team who are only doing a job and may not have the true passion to train aspirants).
  • The state of art infrastructure existing with the Institute; both, indoors and outdoors.
  • A look-alike mandatory GTO ground facilities, exist only with Olive Greens Institute and no other institute in the country:- 2 PGTs, 2 HGTs, 8-10 Command Tasks, all 06 obstacles for Snake Race and all 10 Individual Obstacles made to the same specification as in the SSB laid out in a serene environment. (Institutes which do not have these facilities are unable to impart a realistic feel of the GTO ground).
  • Psychologist discusses the responses given by candidates in the practice Psych Test Dossier. This multiple interaction with candidates make them self-aware and progressively they are able to project desired responses.
  • Group Discussions are conducted every day and individual feedback is given to each candidate on their performance. This immensely builds up their confidence by removing ‘stage fright’ and broadens their knowledge base.
  • Frequent classes on current affairs are conducted to update the candidates on current national and international issues, so that their horizon expands and mind is chiseled to become analytical for giving mature responses in all SSB activities.
  • GPEs and Lecturettes are conducted at least 3-4 times during the two weeks course and candidates are given profound tips by specialists to perform better during SSB.
  • Separate classes and activities to enhance overall personality and social graces of the candidates are interposed with the SSB schedule for overall personality development.
  • A total of 7-8 hours of quality time training is conducted daily and an in-depth counseling of candidates is done on culmination of their training. During counseling a detailed ‘Action Plan’ for future self-preparation is discussed with the candidates.
  • Olive Greens Institute has embarked upon the new concept of E-Learning by an informative blog in the Institute website, which is constantly updated by our team of assessors.

To have a fair idea about SSB selection please view our documentary movie uploaded in our  site:

Finally, “leaders are not born…..they are made” through rigourous and relentless training. Those with passion, MUST start the process early and let themselves loose into the “Leadership Cast” prepared by Olive Greens, and emerge as leaders for life.

Socializing In SSB Interview

2

Socializing In SSB Interview

A major part of your selection depends on Group Tasks. Group tasks are a series of tasks, where your adaptability with the group is checked. It is important for an officer to be socially adaptable, as an officer you’ll be supposed to work with group of people. You need to have an excellent chemistry with your group mates, while in service as it is all about doing things together. The operations you perform, the tasks you do, everything demands a great team effort. In SSB also they are looking for a good team player, as a good team player will benefit the organization. So it is important to have a good relation and bond with your group mates. You need to socialize with your group mates to make sure that you people have a good bond.

A good conversation starts with asking about a person’s background, you can simply begin by asking them about the place where they belong to or about their family or education. If you have an issue in socializing then you need to be extra cautious. You have to make sure that you are not left out. For people who are bad in socializing SSB is like a blessing, as it’ll give you immense chances to remove this barrier and overcome this phase. It is good to mix with people soon. Try initiating a conversation and you’ll find common things very soon.

Socializing In SSB Interview
If there is somebody in the group you see, who has a problem in mixing up, then talk to that person, help him/her to overcome this. Your group will be with you for the longest duration. This is so because every other testing gets over in about 1-2 hours, and group testing is an affair of around 8-10 hours (divided into two days). So group testing goes on for the longest duration of time. If you have a good relationship with your group mates, it’ll be abundantly evident in the group tasks. Having a good repo will help you as they’ll trust you when you device a plan, or when you speak in GD. There are many candidates, who are well deserving but have failed as they got a bad group.
Do not be selfish, and help your group mates if they want to know something. You might be having knowledge on a few topics, so create a healthy atmosphere where you all can share your knowledge and get prepared for the coming tasks. This creates a very positive atmosphere amongst group mates. You can do mock GD’s in room. You can even do mock Lecturettes and mock interviews in you room.
The people you socialize with and the reason you socialize with in SSB might be done for your benefit, but you can get lifelong friends. For six days you share the same thoughts, same goal and have the same zeal, it is not difficult to connect with each other in the absence of any modern technological barrier!

Eye Contact and the Art of Speaking

1

When we talk about the art of speaking, eye contact is one of the things which are considered important. Being an effective speaker is good for you due to the multiple benefits associated with it. If you are an effective speaker, then it’ll help you not only in SSB, but also in many aspects in life. A good orator has an easy way to convince people.

If you have the power of communicating what you feel, then nothing is better than that as then people get to know what your thoughts are in a much simpler way. In SSB there are many places when your, being a good speaker will help you. To begin with it helps you to give a connect with your group mates. Its helps you throughout in the Group Tasks and in the personal interview. Let us see specifically how eye contact helps you.

spot_img

Why Eye contact is important?

When you talk, while looking directly into the eyes of a person, it shows that you are very confident about what you are speaking. When you speak in the Group Discussions, while looking into the eyes of your group mates, they have no choice to look at you and listen.

This will show that you are a good leader, and it’ll be difficult for your group members to cut you in-between. If you have an eye contact while doing the lecturette, it’ll again give you confidence. It’ll show that you are well prepared to speak and will remove your hesitation.

While having a conversation with the interviewing officer, if you have eye contact with him, it’ll again depict that you are confident. They generally tend to look into the eyes of the candidate while asking questions; some candidates get afraid from this and are hesitant to speak.

The IO looks into your eye just to force you speak the truth. If you are ready for the eye contact and look back in his eyes and speak, it’ll be a win-win situation for you. Many tend to forget what they were speaking, when the IO looks them into the eye.

How to develop it?

Eye contact is something you can develop with practice. Start now, look into the eyes of person you are talking to. In the GD look at the person you are speaking with. Don’t look at somebody for too long, keep shifting from one person to the other in random order or in clockwise/anticlockwise direction.

While in the interview, it might be a little difficult for you to look in the eye of the Interviewing officer, not because he looks tough or anything but just because you are already too scared. In that case try looking at his face, if not eyes. Slowly move towards eyes.

The most tough part is to look in the eyes of the group mates, in lecturette (yes some of them make funny faces, show their teeth, and the GTO is sitting behind so they have advantage). Divide the room/area into four parts, look in each block one after the other, this way you don’t have to look directly into the eyes also and the purpose will be solved.

Five Common Myths You Shouldn’t Be Having About SSB

Five Common Myths You Shouldn’t Be Having About SSB

SSB being a highly secret examination, in terms of predictability of results candidates try to gather information about SSB from various sources. Most of the sources they gather information from are not reliable. So that gives rise to myths and wrong notions related to SSB. One of these common myths is that SSB is a very difficult interview. A few days back, a friend of mine, a total layman about this asked me, ‘should I attempt SSB?,I have heard that it is very difficult’. Well for beginners I would like to say that do not have myths in your mind, it is not good. Sometimes even veterans of SSB have myths about it. Here I am dealing with such few myths, if you guys have any more, please share it:

  1. Regarding rejection boards: Candidates say that a particular board rejects candidate more than it selects. It is a common myth amongst students that certain boards are tough and others are easy. They do not have a proof but just hear the rumors, panic and spread the rumor endlessly. There is no such thing like selection or rejection board. Every board works on the same principle to shortlist, recommend or reject candidates. It’s as simple as that, if you have OLQ’s and you project them at the right time at the right place you are in, else you are not!
  2. English and your selection: Candidates who have weak English, are often worried about that they might lag behind due to poor English. People have this myth that if they have poor English then they will not get selected. It is certainly not the case. You need to have good communication skill, and it it doesn’t consist of English only. You need to have a good way of communicating your thoughts and ideas. English certainly helps but doesn’t form the sole basis of selection.
     Myths SSB Interview
  3. The secret agents: This is a rather funny myth. People have all sorts of belief that the selection board people are spread everywhere, all round the corner in the city in which they are giving their SSB in. They feel that they are monitoring and assessing you all the time, endlessly. You are marked only during the tests. Otherwise there is nobody ‘assessing’ you as such. You are supposed to behave like a gentle person, and it is a very small thing to ask for.
  4. Fauji kids-cake walk: Another wrong thought people hold is that SSB boards are partial towards the Fauji kids. This is certainly not the case, in fact there is more expectation if you are from Fauji background.
  5. Notion of leadership: Candidates think that yelling, dominating and getting ahead in the group is a way to demonstrate leadership. It doesn’t show your leadership skills, it only show what a big bully you are. For being a real leader, you need to be a team player. Take your group in the right direction by being with them, instead of rushing to go ahead.

Five Must Have Qualities For SSB Interview

1

You would have heard a lot about the required OLQ’s, i.e. the Officer Like Qualities, which you must have for getting through the SSB. These qualities are the essential qualities of an officer. While some of them must be present in a candidate, some others can be developed while in training. So these qualities which may be developed in training are given less weightage. However this article is not about those qualities, it is about essential five qualities, or traits which a candidate must possess in order to ensure success. I would like to clear here that these qualities have no resemblance to the OLQ’s, yet some may be common. These qualities are taken from a general point of view, which will enhance your personality:

ssbinterviewbook
  1. Honesty: This is the first and foremost quality that a person should have, not only for SSB but for the all walks of life. Honest people are held in high esteem, and can be trusted with anything. If you are dishonest once you’ll be marked dishonest for life, so ensure that you speak nothing but the truth. SSB is a matter of 6 days, and it is not possible to fake anything for so long. Even if you fake and get selected you are bound to suffer from problems in training. So state the correct facts write only your thoughts and not mugged up things. Say the truth in the interview.
  2. Leadership: Leadership has several shades to it. It is not about bullying and standing in front, it is all about supporting from the front yet shining in the front. You are expected to be a good leader in SSB. You must be the one who can take the group in the right direction, towards a common solution avoiding any conflict and disagreements in the group tasks. Your PIQ should reflect that you were a good leader, the ‘position of responsibility held’, column is very important. As a good leader you must support the other people in your group, and definitely not shout at your sub ordinates when they make a mistake. You should keep your points in a firm but polite way, and not shout and force people to agree to you.
  3. Responsibility: Being an officer is a great matter of responsibility, and anybody with a careless attitude can definitely not be trusted with such a responsibility. There are several instances to show that you are responsible, most of it comes in the interview. You should be a responsible child, a responsible friend. The most important part is taking responsibility or your mistakes. Say you have scored less, then you must have the courage to take responsibility for your less marks.
  4. Patience: Your patience is tested to the biggest level in SSB. Right from the time you start waiting for your bus at the station, till the time you hear the final results. SSB is a long process; you must have the patience to bear with the long wait durations. Since there are so many candidates involved together, you must be ready to wait wait and wait. If you are a person with less patience level then you are bound to lose your mind, which will affect your performance.
  5. Good Listener: In SSB there are instructions given before any test. If you follow those instructions sincerely, half the battle is won. Unfortunately candidates are not a good listener, and thus they do not listen to those long instructions. Their mind tends to either drift away in between or they tend to listen half-heartedly. But you must listen to whatever instruction is given before any test very closely, it contains the mantra for success.

Importance Of Handwriting In The SSB Interview

0

After the advent of computers and smart phones, most of our work is done by typing. We hardly take up a pen and write extensively on a piece of paper. This culture has resulted in diminution of our handwriting skills. From the point of view of the SSB interview, having a neat and legible handwriting is a must. Apart from having a neat and clean handwriting, it is equally imperative that you possess adequate speed of writing. We will be discussing these two aspects of handwriting in detail.

ssbinterviewbook

NEATNESS AND LEGIBILITY

Any task which involves the use of your handwriting skills will prove to be a successful one if you have a good handwriting more often than not. In our school days we always had a friend who outscored us only because of his handwriting. We often blamed the teacher for giving extra marks for good handwriting. We must understand that handwriting is very closely related to psychology. We have signature experts, handwriting experts who give you the behavioural details of a person just by perusing (scrutinizing) his handwriting. In the same way, the psychologist in the services selection board comes to know a lot about you from the way you write. A neatly written note creates a palatable effect on the reader and a hideously written note makes the reader distraught. I am not telling you to be a calligraphy expert. A certain level of legibility is required so that reader doesn’t have any uneasiness in comprehending what is written. A psychologist once told me that whenever there are swarms of applicants, the neatly written responses are shortlisted first, and then their responses are evaluated. This implies that even if you possess a balanced psychology, you might not get through because the psychologist wouldn’t have understood what you had written. The easier you make it for the assessors to construe (interpret) your responses, the better will be the chances of your recommendation.

spot_img

SPEED

Your writing speed plays a pivotal part in your selection. All the tests in the SSB interview are timed ones. Whether it is GPE, Psych or PIQ form filling, you have to finish your task comprehensively within the stipulated time. You may have very good handwriting but it will prove to be futile if you do not possess the speed to complement it. Legibly written twelve stories are better than beautifully written eight. Writing too fast can also affect the legibility of your responses. Your speed should be such that you complete all the tests within the given time. Speed is one thing that can be achieved through practice, if you think you lack in speed, you can start practicing. The more you write, the better you get.

CRUX

To summarise I would say that yes, beautiful handwriting is always welcomed but there are no extra marks for it. Only the quality of your responses matters. However, you must write neatly and cleanly with enough speed to complete all the tests in time. Also, avoid any cutting and overwriting in your responses. Too much overwriting in your responses reflect your apprehensions. I hope this article has thrown enough light into the aspect of handwriting from the point of view of the SSB interview. Stay tuned to SSBCRACK for more such articles.

Taming The Time for SSB Interview

Taming The Time for SSB Interview

One of the most important concerns of modern era is the time management. We have become so hyper active in our daily routine that we hardly find the time to do anything apart from the usual chores. Majority of the SSB aspirants being students, find themselves in a state of quandary when it comes to balancing their studies, leisurely activities and ssb preparation. Every night we think of changing ourselves and make good use of the coming day but tend to find ourselves in the same position the next night. As it is ubiquitously said “,Tareeq pe Tareeq”, day after day the time vanishes like soil from your fists. In order to realise your dreams, you need to pull up your socks and spruce up your lifestyle. We will be discussing certain DOs and DON’Ts which could be followed to milk the time to your advantage.

  1. SET REALISTIC GOALS:- Our body doesn’t’ adapt to change very easily. Slow and steady is the key. Do not expect that suddenly a Maruti 800 would turn into a Lamborghini. Make a veracious and fair assessment of yourself and set your goals. Remember your expectations from yourself should be incremental in nature and not a haphazard one. Do not set very easy goals; the word officer is synonymous of a crisis manager.
  2. CALIBRATE THE CALENDAR:- Set a goal which you would like to achieve in the coming year. Now divide the year into 12 months. Allocate smaller goals to each months leading to the final goal. Then divide your goal further into 4 weeks each for each month. Assign a challenging task for each week keeping in mind the larger goal. Concentrate on each day as it is the last day before your test. This approach has proved to be phenomenal in most of the cases. It is all about assigning the right task and sticking to it.
Taming The Time for SSB Interview
  3. STICK TO THE PLAN: – Whether it is a friend’s birthday party or the marriage of your relative, do not let these occasions affect your regime. Believe you me, no one will really mind your absence as long as you are fulsomely devoted to your goal. Your friends and relatives will be proud of you when you return home as a commissioned officer. Hence, you must give top priority to your career and nothing else.
  4. DO AWAY WITH THE DISTRACTIONS: – We all have different likes and dislikes. Similarly, we all get distracted to different things differently. Some waste their time over surfing the net, some on social media, some gossip too much and some are just remiss. Deer doesn’t go into the mouth of a tiger on its own; it is the tiger who has to hunt for its prey. You have to decide your fate. There is no dearth of deserving candidates in the SSB interview. Unless you shake those layers of lethargy, you will not succeed in the SSB.
  5. ANALYSE THE TIME SPENT: – If you are finding it too difficult to change your routine then follow this simple exercise. Divide your day into 48 parts (30 mins each) and write the activity you have done in that particular time. You will find out that you have given away precious dollops of time on a platter. Then try to replace an unproductive half an hour (unimportant activity) with a productive one (important activity). Follow this exercise for a week and you will be witnessing a change in yourself and you will start managing time in a better way.
This was all about managing time and leveraging each minute to the hilt. I hope this article will prove to act as a facilitator in your time management. For any nagging doubts please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
