Indian Air Force Selection Process 2014 2015

Many have the dream of joining the Indian Air Force. One of the most prestigious and sacred association to work amongst the sprawling jets and have a lifetime experience of adventure and thrill. The Indian Air Force follows a particular selection process to recruit officers. This article describes the selection process which the IAF follows. Basically IAF has got a two step selection process which is followed by two other processes.

Here are the two steps:

  1. Written Tests: The first step in order to join the IAF is the written test. Basically there are three modes of entry into IAF. These modes of entry are through NDA (National Defence Academy) exam, through Air Force Common Admission Test (AFCAT) and through Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE). Each of these exams consists of a written test. The syllabus and eligibility criteria for each exam differs and you can refer to them on our website. In order to reach the second level you have to clear the first level which is the written test. In CDSE and NDA which are common exam for the tri services, the cut off for airforce is highest.
Indian Air Force Selection Procedure 2014
  2. Interview: After you clear the written test you are called for the Interview.  The interview for IAF is one of the trickiest and toughest. The pattern followed is the pattern of Service Selection Board. It is a six day interview. The first day is the screening test consisting of verbal and non verbal reasoning test and a picture perception and description test (PPDT). Those candidates who clear this are kept back for five more days. In these five days they undergo different tests which are psychological tests, personal interview and group tests. The candidates who apply for the flying branch also undergo a Pilot Aptitude and Battery Test which is once in a lifetime test. The SSB for airforce is known as AFSB and is held at one of the four AFSB centers which are Dehradun, Mysore, Gandhinagar and Varanasi. The candidates who give their first preference as IAF in NDA and CDSE exams also have their SSB in these centers generally. After the end of five days the results are announced and based on your performance you are either recommended or not recommended.
  3. Medical: This is not a test, it is just a criteria which you have to fulfill. There are certain criteria and some additional physical criteria’s for the flying branch. In order to be finally inducted into the forces you have to fulfill these medical criteria’s.
  4. Merit: The selection board only recommends you. Your final selection depends on your performance in written test marks, your SSB marks and your medical conditions. After the SSB and before the commencement of the course an All India Merit is prepared and based on the number of requirements candidates are taken. Those who have secured higher marks in written and SSB the merit are ranked above those who have secured low marks. And depending on the vacancy available they are called for the course.

How To Excel In Self Description In Psychology Round

1
Self Description SSB

Though self description is the last round of Psychology, but it has its own importance. It’s just a simple exercise where the psychologist wants to know your perception about yourself along with your closed ones. It’s very important for a person to realise that you should know yourself clearly. If you are familiar with the grantha RAMAYAN, there was Hanuman who had lot of powers but had low confidence on his capabilities. But once he was made remembered of his capabilities he can do wonders. Jamwant told him of his capabilities after which he crossed the sea and went to Lanka to give message to Sita ji. Having Capabilities is different but recognising them and using them at the right time is what is needed in an officer. This round focuses on that.

Time allotted to write is 15 minutes and you have to write the following:
  • What do you think about yourself?
  • What your parents think of you?
  • What your friends/ colleagues think of you?
  • What you boss/ teacher thinks of you?
  • What limitations you feel in yourself?
    Self Description SSB
The aim of this exercise is to assess the maturity of the participants that whether he knows of himself or not. Also you are the best one who knows about yourself no one else can access you in best way apart from yourself. Hence through these exercises you are made to write who you are and then through other exams you are judged whether you were right or wrong. If interference if found between what you say and what you do, you are recommended. How to prepare well for this exam?
  • Since it’s like you already know what to write, you should prepare beforehand and prepare a paragraph for each category.
  • Keep track of time as it’s important to write something for each category. No category should be left unanswered.
  • Have knowledge of both positives and negatives about you. Because it gives a good impression to the examiner that you have thorough knowledge about yourself.
  • Don’t feel shame in consulting parents and teachers, colleagues, friends to know their opinion about you. Since what they think needs to be mentioned this is the perfect opportunity to know this. They will give some of the details which i am sure to your surprise you might not know.
  • Don’t even try to bluff or tell lies or else you will never be selected.
  • Try to show your true character in this exercise. Or else it would be caught either by the psychologist or the interviewer.
  • Be ready with the wish list of how you goanna remove your negative qualities. Do mention them as no one is perfect and everyone has it.
Yaa it’s that easy. Just follow these simple suggestions and it makes you prepare for a part of Psychology round and for the PI too. Details of other parts of psychology round like WAT, TAT, SRT, etc. will be covered separately. For any other help feel free to get in touch.

How To Gather Ability To Be An Officer In Indian Defence Forces

2
ota women officer

“Ability is what you are capable of doing, motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” ~~ Lou HoltzJoining Indian defence force is a dream which is lived by most but fulfilled by very few. Not because people applying are not capable, but they lack motivation to achieve. Some of them are dedicated, but lost and don’t know where to go to achieve their goals. Some of them are there just for the sake of seeing the reality and check the myths that prevail while others reach SSB centre just because their friends might have filled the form and they are going. Do you think such attitude works for life? A big no from my side. When a person is thriving for success and knows where he needs to reach and how to reach then only can he achieve it.

So before you make a decision of any consequence, make sure you are in your right and strongest mind, feeling positive rather than sad, healthy not ill, full rather than empty, active rather than tired. Motivation is highly needed as it’s rightly said that even if you have the ability but no motivation you will feel the lack of internal energy that pushes you to achieve. Failures might be part of your life, but they are necessary to keep life moving ahead else life would be monotonous with no fear. People would stop working hard if failure were not there. It’s the fear of failure only that keeps you motivated to achieve some stand in life.

Indian Army Officers
Attitude of looking at situations and reacting to them also determines how well you do and achieve things. People look dreams and do not work accordingly. They think everything is easy to achieve, but they are far from reality. In course of time when they lose then only they realise how much work was needed and how much they did. If they might have filled this gap success would always be theirs. So I believe every individual who dreams to clear SSB has the capability, but what misses is the motivation to work and the attitude to perform. The panelist at SSB is a group of experts who has the capability to judge with the blink of an eye. They are trained professionally and that’s why who are selected is different from the world.
Please remember :
“My life is a constant battle of wanting to be alone and not wanting to be lonely”
Life is a battle and you should fight it bravely. Once you inculcate these qualities, I think no one can stop you clearing the SSB as it is the only exam which judges you on various parameters for five days and then selects you. It’s the beauty of this exam that wrong is caught and punished. The exam is so pure that only the deserving candidates cross it. You are also the one, but believe in your efforts and keep trying… Rest for any help related to the matter feel free to ping me.

6 Steps To Clear SSB Interview

6 Steps To Clear SSB Interview

The service selection board interviews are said to be the trickiest interview in this world. The reason being that you never get to know why you got selected and you never get to know why you were rejected as well. But certainly once you clear the SSB interview you have a great chance of becoming the part of the elites, i.e. part of the defence forces of India. So all in all there is no mantra in particular which can make you success in SSB. Success in SSB means performing well in all the tests, being consistent and being confident. Here we try to give you tips and solutions which may help you in your interview.

Anything in this world can be achieved if you are sincere enough in your efforts. So given below are some steps which will help you in getting selected in the interview.

  • Consistency: Being consistent is very important in SSB. You can’t get selected if you are good in one test and bad in other tests. So consistency is very important. Perform equally good in all the tests, this will certainly increase your chances of success in the interview.
  • Will Power: If you have failed in your previous attempts then you definitely need the will power. Trust me the more you have been to SSB the more your chances increase. Because you get to know the whole process. Keep up your will power and be certain that you’ll achieve your goal with your determination.
    SSB Interview
  • Introspection: Self introspection is very important for SSB. Mostly without even realizing you are reflecting your personality in every test their. You need to know your personality well in order to project yourself clearly. So self-introspection is important for both freshers and repeaters. If you know yourself well you’ll know your strengths weaknesses and thus you can polish your strengths and abolish your weaknesses.
  • Confidence: An ingredient which plays the role of salt in success. If you low confidence you are not likely to succeed. If you are over confident you’ll never succeed, so confidence is just like salt, it is very important to have the correct amount. A confident person leaves a mark in the crowd. So develop confidence, and it’ll develop only with thorough preparation.
  • Work Hard: Success comes by working hard. Hard work always pays, so work hard and do whatever it takes you to get success. Prepare well, do lots of practice, brush up your GK, your knowledge about the force you are going for the interview. In short leave no stone unturned to get your aim.
  • Keep your eye and mind open: You need to receptive and adaptive. This point is especially for the repeaters. You need to open your eyes and brain and analyze what mistake you did in your previous attempts. If you are not receptive to your mistakes then you’ll keep on going and coming back without recommendation. So open your eyes and mind and analyse and improve your mistakes.

Recommended for Indian Army, Joining Indian Military Academy

Today watching my name appearing in the merit list of the batch for IMA 137 course, memories start to whirl around my mind. A month ago wearing a chest number with a prestigious ‘+’ sign, I wondered is it real or just a wonderful dream. I knew it would take time to sink in, because it wasn’t just a fulfillment of a single person’s aspiration, it was a success for the whole family and friends. It’s a feeling of pride and joy in family’s eyes, a treat to watch a sense of excitement on friend’s faces.

It’s a journey that starts a few years back when a cousin brother got commissioned in the Army. Listening how he achieved it and watching the satisfaction on his parents faces, I use to think should I also try it? Am I capable of achieving it? Do I really want to be an Army officer? But at that point of time, I never felt about it by heart.
Then I met Bhushan in my life, a friend who completely changed it for me. Frankly, it is because of him along with my mother, I am here standing as an Indian Army Officer in the making. Listening to his experiences about SSB’s, the life a Gentleman Cadet (GC) in the academy, the kind of honour and respect an officer receives, the dignity in the Defence Services, made me fell in love with this career. Along with it all, it was my mother’s motivation; her words always encouraged me and made me believe that, yes I can do it. And I started thinking about it, dreaming about it, preparing for it. It was my father’s friend an ex-serviceman, because of whom I started Meeting people from the defence services, which helped me to know in detail about the army and the entrance exams.
Indian Military Academy
With this all and some preparations, I gave the CDSE, cleared it and then came the first call-up letter for the SSB. The day 24th July 2013, from where the real journey began and considering everyone’s views, I decided to take some training which would help me to get familiarized with the process of SSB. With it, I went to the SSB, and with everyone’s wishes and hopes I gave my best shot, but somehow fall short of touch line.
On 23rd September 2013, after the conference results, it was a tough pill to swallow. But, family and friends made it easy. The realization of not getting recommended actually gave me and impetus to perform better and introspect. After which with a wisely guidance of Ret. Brig. Harish Chande, Col. Durga and Lt. Col. Indrajit Ghoshal, I started to understand the SSB better.
The psychological techniques really made me to think positive, to act positively at any situation. The GTO technique’s made me realize the importance of group work and planning and time management along with the social adaptability factor. The interview techniques made me speak, made me introspect and really look where I stand. With this all three ‘मनसा’, ‘वाचा ‘and ‘कर्मा’, the wheels of mind and brain started churning, started thinking deep.
With this all and a rejuvenated mind, I entered the SSB again and it did wonders to myself. And today, watching my name in the merit list I feel proud with a sense of satisfaction, for the efforts I put in. But as the President Sir said, it’s just a start of another wonderful journey… I thank each and everyone around me for helping me to reach this position, and I hope I will walk the path of this wonderful journey with all the blessings and support of all my friends and family and after a year and half I will achieve the ultimate dream… of being AN INDIAN ARMY OFFICER.

Abilities of an Officer for Indian Defence Services

1

It’s the dream of every youth to have that uniform on the body, those shining stars/ rings or strips on the shoulder, those awards and medals on the chest. They are always pride for an individual. The culture that you belong to once you are an officer, the style of living, or whatever it’s totally different from the civilian culture we are part of now.

Time becomes more precious and motherland the most. Their priority changes and they see things differently. Now you will be thinking that do they have all this from the very beginning. The answer is a big NO … these things they learn as a part of stringent training that they undergo after being recommended for the defence forces. But yes one thing is very much true that they have the spark to do something in life, they have a bit of each and every quality that is present in a officer which is later developed fully through training. I had read somewhere that an officer must have the following ability:

An officer should be able to

  • Heal the wound
  • Plan an expedition
  • Order from a French menu
  • Climb a mountain face
  • Enjoy a ballet
  • Balance accounts
  • Role a kayak
  • Embolden a friend
  • Tell a joke
  • Laugh at himself
  • Cooperate
  • Act alone
  • Sing a children song
  • Solve equation
  • Throw a dog a stick
  • Pitch manure
  • Program a computer
  • Cook a tasty meal
  • Love heartedly
  • Fight efficiently and
  • Die gallantry

Specialization is for insects ~~ Lewis E Hitchner

Indian Military Academy

The above lines speak the ability that an officer must have and Lewis defines it clearly. They should be perfect in whatever they do because specialisation is just for insects. I hope you get the jest of what an officer means for the nation. They are formed of stone and share the ability to survive in every condition, they are made to learn how to strive for excellence and die for their motherland. They are perfect and are adaptable to every condition. That’s why SSB is designed such, that judges your qualities and then only makes you move ahead to get the title of an officer with that shining uniform, stars and medals on the chest. You don’t win them, but you deserve them if you have the ability to reach that place. So what are you thinking for, burn the spark in you to move towards excellence and see what all could you do. For any help, counselling you can feel free to get in touch with me. I would love to see you living your dream.

Importance of Being Positive for a Defence Aspirant

1
Indian Army Lady Officers

Already thought of joining Indian defence services?  Alas… You are on the right path. Indian defence is one of the best services one could opt for being in India. It is a place where you could live for your country and think of serving and protecting its rights. Being surrounded by neighbours who do not tend to have good relations with our country it’s the need of time. Every youth want to contribute to its motherland but the real right is bestowed to the defence personnel’s only.

They are the real heroes and have the power to do so. If you want to be one, identify the need of service for motherland in your heart and brain and then move ahead. SSB a wonderful 5 day stint and the gateway to be an officer with Indian defence requires a synchronisation between your body, heart and mind. Whatever you think with your mind should without any conflict be agreed upon by your heart and should be reflected in your action with the help of your body. This synchronisation helps in removing the duality of thought and action becomes result oriented. You never turn back to your decision for validation. Remember, an officer never has another chance to think whether the decision he has taken is right or wrong. The protection of motherland never gives another chance to think what’s next?  If these three function together you are the right one to move ahead. SSB clearly judges you as a person and recommends you only if you have sufficient OLQ’s. The parameters are stringent and are not changed for anyone. Popularity of defence is growing not because it pays you high but it’s the only place in India where no reservation applies. All are equally treated here and judged on tough parameters before clearing.

Indian Army Women
The mantra for success is the positivity one carries in life. You are tested to look how positive one can be in adverse situations. Positivity changes way of thinking and can convert an adverse situation into a good one. This is a tested formula and yes it has worked for years for the defence personnel’s in acquiring the right talent. The officers that get recommended not only have a different approach to look at situations but are daring enough to think differently than the so called “civilians”. You should have a positive thought process and it should be developed since the inception. Be happy in every situation you face. The thought process of positivity is something that takes time to build in and it cannot be developed immediately when you get a ssb call. This would definitely be a help in psychology section and would be reflected in whatever you answer in PI. So get ready….. Built in positivity…. time is flowing off.
In next article I would be concentrating more on the hidden mantras to get success in SSB. This article tries to tell the advantage of being positive so be one.

What are the OLQ’s That are Needed to Clear SSB Interview

OLQs SSB Interview

“SSB is a battle. Only brave can survive it!!! “~~ Jayendra. Battles are only meant for soldiers. Wrong thought indeed. Everyone who is surviving on this earth is striving to make the best of it.  Every second we tend to fight a battle to survive. Ask a mother who constantly fights battle with time for sending her children in time to school, preparing them breakfast and lunch so that they do not feel discomfort. Ask a student who fights battle constantly for securing good grades and thrive to learn more to exist in this competitive world. What about a father who constantly works hard to earn a living so that his family could survive. What about a beggar who is trying hard to earn a penny for his children so that they can have food at night. Life is just another name for struggle. Those who do it properly live life enjoy fully.

But the other thing one needs to keep in mind is that nothing is impossible here. Those who achieve and those who fail are human beings only. It’s their effort and hard work which later reflects in their achievements. Nothing is possible without hard work. Luck or Noise function as we call it in MBA merely plays a significant role in other exams but SSB is not the place for it. No luck factor plays a role here. You might hear people saying at last that I was asked tough questions while others had been asked what they knew. Please understand such comments are given by people who are screened out or are not recommended. The evaluators at SSB judge everyone through the same eye. It however matters that such people could have done well if they would have prepared it and should be thorough in everything.
SSB has a set of parameters where you are judged for Officer like qualities (OLQ’s) as we call them. The following are the OLQ’s that one must have:
  • Effective Intelligence
  • Reasoning ability
  • Organising ability
  • Power of expression
  • Cooperation
  • Sense of responsibility
  • Self confidence
  • ability to influence group
  • Speed of Decision
  • Initiative
  • Determination
  • Honesty
  • Stamina
  • Courage
    OLQs SSB Interview
So clearing SSB is more of a mental game rather than a physical one. SO just keep calm and be stress free. Get ready to work hard and keep yourself relaxed. Various rounds of SSB are just meant to judge the above qualities in you. If you have it in you no one can stop you from clearing it. So get ready to fight the battle… At last remember the quote below and always feel contended that you are getting better in life.
You may not be where you want to be but you can definitely look back and be thankful you are not where you used to be. ~~ Soel Osteer
