What is the CDS SSB Interview process?
In the private sector or other competitive sectors, human resources depend on the philosophy of ‘Best Fit’ whereas in the Indian Armed Forces selection is based on the philosophy of ‘Right Fit’. There are three major ways of testing candidates as per SSBs prerequisite standards:
Detail about these tests is discussed in the below sections.
What are CDS SSB Interview dates?
A candidate whether he/she has qualified any armed forces entrance exam or made in the merit list of candidates based on academic records for any particular type of entry, to get called up for SSB interview candidates are first allotted with a roll number and sequenced in a list as per their roll numbers. This list is then published online by the selection board for the candidates to see. List contains detail like Name with respective roll numbers along with DOB with the date of reporting for SSB interview.
Hey guys, finally made it through the SSB in 4th attempt. My first 2 conferences were in 2018 for the NDA Exam attempt at Mysore (everyone wanted to become a fighter pilot). Got conferenced out both the times because I had quite an empty profile, no good hobbies or extracurricular activities, bad communication skills, and was not in good shape too. Again went for TES in January 2019 and got screened out from SSB Bhopal.
Then I decided not to increase my attempt. Got my LAKSHYA of joining the forces after getting the conference out, and started working on all those points. Tbh it was a very interesting journey of hard work with persistence for 3 years straight, from running 10K to participating in the international competition for building RC aircraft. Got my goal clear of joining the Indian army after seeing a Para SF officer, they look amazing.
And yes the most important thing, saw a beautiful girl with a wonderful personality and made my mind that if I clear my SSB then I’ll be able to approach her, men will be men. This was the motivation that just boosted my preparation to a different level.
1st step was to clear the CDS Examination, being an engineering student my maths, science and English were strong. The difficult part was to cross 20 marks in the General Knowledge paper, prioritised things for me, and started preparing 40 days before the exam. For Maths I would just read notes from book, write down the formulas and then write mock tests online and practice pyqs, I solved around 2000 questions in total and gave 5-6 full-length tests. For English, I just practiced my grammar and solved pyqs. Most difficult part was GK, covered all science topics and current affairs series and revised, solved pyqs to get an idea of questions they ask. The paper went quite well, just crossed 20 in GK and maths was lengthy this time but still managed to get 50 correct of 56. I might have just crossed the cutoff but my name was there for IMA SSB. Got my centre at Allahabad, 19 SSB. I selected the date for my conference on my 21st birthday, 1st April.
Now I started my SSB Interview Preparation, I was fit, I was good with my communication skills and had a good profile this time. So I knew that I just have to express myself honestly and confidently. Joined online groups for PPDT and GD preparation, really helped me in boosting my confidence. Then started reading newspaper to get an idea of what’s happening around world and how is that affecting us. YouTube channels were a big help in building my geopolitics knowledge. Also used to practice lecturette daily and was getting better in organising my thoughts. Never left running in between, kept my self active and fit but make sure you don’t overdo and injure yourself. For the introspection part, write down all my activities and achievement from class 8 till now in a notebook, to know my strength and weakness. Wrote the PIQ and then covered all the related topics that can be asked from that. Psychology was difficult for me as my handwriting and speed both were bad, so had to practice by writing stories daily. For writing stories the simple concept is that if you don’t see a problem, don’t create one. Just write normal and simple stories that make sense and express yourself in them. Prepare 12th story, if you get a better idea there then write that or else keep one for backup. WAT and SRT will be easy after you practice writing stories, then for SD just remember that you are the best, your parents, friends and teachers are the best because they are the reason for your current self and they only think positive if you, rest you know so prepare that. Be honest and don’t bluff anywhere, if you have committed any mistake in life then accept it and take responsibility. Make sure you pack your bag well and keep all your documents ready, read the call up letter properly.
Went to Allahabad a day before my SSB, practiced my OIR that day and made friends, had a good night sleep and went there fresh. OIR was quite easy as I had practiced similar questions, picture was quite clear and made a simple story. Mapped all points in my mind and then delivered confidently.
GTO started with GD, didn’t go well but whenever I spoke I gave valid and crisp points. For GPE I prioritised problem and solved them as I did in SRTs with time, distance and resources used. Was very confident of my solution and made up for my poor participation in GD here in GPE solution, my solution was agreed by group. Next we had PGT, instead of shouting your idea just go ahead and implement it, if you don’t have idea then step back and let others implement. But make sure that you are implementing and moving ahead as a group. Next was GRO, kept on shouting my war cry Jai Mata Di leading from front, helped others in climbing the wall but other than that I was in the front motivating others and leading. Next we had HGT, again did the same thing of standing in front and implementing the ideas, also giving others chance by stepping back if I go blank. My group was very cooperative. Next we had Lecturette and I chose the topic of Paytm and Google Pay, divided the topic in 6 parts and delivered a decent speech for exactly 3 minutes without stuttering anywhere. Was quite happy with my performance and prepared myself mentally for 2nd day. We had IO first, simple trick for that is to have a proper map to cross the obstacles so that you don’t run left and right, started from the outermost obstacle and went in making a spiral. Did only 12 as I had to repeat screen jump twice and balance beam 4 times, but I came back to them only after completing others. Don’t waste time, complete others and then come back and don’t give up. I even said 12-13 in interview so I was satisfied. Next was my command task and I was called last, was questioned why I was called only once and I gave the honest yet stupid reason.
I also told all my mistakes in SSB Psychology and interview, my dad’s unit name too. My command task was descent and he also asked me to tell 5 bad qualities of father while doing it, but he was also giving hints in between and I completed it. FGT was conducted at end and same thing, just step ahead and implement it. GTO was over, I was in a delima that since I was called only once I might not make it this time. Anyways had a good night sleep. 1st April 2022, my 21st birthday and it started with getting kicks on my butt by everyone xD. Dressed up nicely and went in their confidently, conference hardly lasted for 3-4 minutes and I was called in, they asked me about my efforts and chances of getting recommended. I said I gave my 100% and 90% of getting recommended, for 10% I told all the mistakes I did. Then they asked me to compare my attempt to my 2018 attempt and for that I said I gave rough comparison. Ended my conference by asking questions on stay and all. One officer came and announced 13 and 23 cleared it, I was more than happy. Not much happened that time but that day I was awake by 3am in the morning walking in the hall wearing my +3 chest number. Everything I did was coming in my mind again and again and I was just feeling proud of myself. Getting recommended on my 21st birthday, the best birthday gift I could’ve ever asked for.
To end it I’ll just say that never give up, if you face any problem then change your plan and prepare well. Self introspection if very important and the method I explained above is quite effective. If you won’t know your weakness then you can never make that your strength. Keep grinding everyone.
PPDT or Picture Perception and Discussion Test is a test conducted in the stage-I testing of SSB. This is an important test since it is a major factor in determining whether or not you’ll pass to stage-II testing and thus whether or not you’ll stay back for 4-5 more days.
This test comprises of two stages, in stage one the candidates are shown a hazy picture and thus they have to write a story around that picture, mark the characters, their mood, age, sex etc. as per their perceptions, in stage two the candidates are seated in a group of around 10-18 and one by one they narrate their stories immediately followed by a discussion which aims at arriving at a common story and then one person decided by the group narrates the story to the panel sitting there.
The candidates are confused as to what types of stories they should build for PPDT in order to have maximum chances of selection. Especially Freshers and Screened out candidates have this dilemma. Here are a few tips which will help you in building better PPDT stories.
Remember the picture is hazy so concentrate and try to drive out the most positive scene you can. Spend the 30 seconds given for observing the picture very effectively.
Stay away from pre conceived stories, or those you have read from Books. Stay as original as you can.
Go for a fewer number of characters, even if you see a mob, marks only 2-3 characters at the most, this will help you in building a better story and save your time.
Your story must comprise of a hero/heroine and this should be the central character of your story. The hero should do some heroic or appreciable thing in your story. Make a single hero only.
Write the story in past tense.
You don’t have to describe the scene instead you have to imagine what possibly could have led to the scene, how the hero overcame the problem in your story and what the result was.
Thus in general a story should have a format somewhat like this. There should be some problem/concern, there should be a hero and he should overcome the problem, and then write that the problem or concern was solved or taken care of and the hero felt nice on doing so.
Listen to the instructions given at the time of PPDT very carefully.
Do not write very impractical stories, like being rewarded for doing something, means getting bravery award and all. Getting rewarded is a difficult task and doesn’t happens in real life too often, so be practical.
You will be asked to write the action of the story; here you have to write the main gist or theme of your story in a single line or 5-10 words. Keep in mind that you don’t have to give the title to your story.
Write the story neatly, without cuts and in best possible handwriting.

Hi, I am Lakshyaraj Singh, I recently got recommended from 18 SSB Allahabad for National Defence Academy NDA 148 course in my 2nd attempt. My journey begin when I was 10 years old, I was in my village and watching T.V with my Grandfather and my cousins. We were watching. Border movie and when the movie finished on that day I have decided to join the Indian army.
I appeared in NDA 147 course written exam in April 2021 and I failed that. Also got a conference out from 21 ssb Bhopal for TES 45. Back-to-back failures made me feel sad, but there was the belief that I had from my childhood that we are Rajput we don’t give up, so I continued my preparation for the next NDA written exam, this time I took SSBCrackExams 3 months course for UPSC NDA written examination. I used this platform to clear the concept and learn the formulas of maths that are not in NCERT. Took all the classes of English helped me to score 155 out of 200 in English.
And after appearing in the exam on 14 November I was confident of clearing the paper this time so I started my preparation for SSB Interview. This time my main focus is on personality development, I participated in inter-college debates, a journalism program, started workout at the gym, being more organised and productive in daily life.
Done introspection to find out my strengths and weaknesses. Also wrote a book and published it on Kindle Direct Publishing, started conducting and participating in group discussions, PPDT and Lecturette with other students who are preparing for SSB. Also developed my knowledge of global politics from youtube and newspapers.
In last I would say if we do the following things :
Work hard in a systematic way
Develop Our personality
Nothing and no one can stop us from achieving our goal.
So keep working hard and plan each and everything in life.
Many times during the SSB interview, TAT and WAT are the two tests that aspirants find more difficult and have a tough time coping with it. Among the psychological tests, TAT is also one. It is conducted on day-2 of second-stage testing. It is conducted to bring the real personality of the candidate through his interpretation of the stories both positive and negative.
The TAT involves picture projection and story writing depending on the picture shown. A total of 11+1 pictures are shown where 11 pictures are with a theme and the last is a blank picture, where a candidate should imagine a story.
The pictures are displayed for 30 seconds and the candidate is given 4 minutes to write a story about the picture seen. It is continued for all the 12 pictures. The picture consists of one or more than one person.
Here, I bring you some helpful and handy tips that you can follow to attempt TAT successfully:
Practicing the story writing keeping in front some picture is firstly advisable for the candidates. No matter what you write. Just write and catch up gradually as you continue writing.
Your story must not be too lengthy and you also cannot afford to write a long story in 3-4 minutes. Generally it should contain 10-15 sentences with a prolog, main body, and conclusion. Keep it simple and smart. Build you vocabulary to cut short the sentences and avoid twisting sentences.
The stories must be creative and positive. You should write what you perceived but avoid any negativity to creep into your story. The stories must have a definite and positive ending while they should be written in past tense.
In the test room, when the picture is shown, it is essential to attentively observe the picture and make out the characters and objects shown. As the picture is shown for only 30 secs, I advise that candidate observe the number of people, their gender, what they’re doing and their surroundings carefully.
When you have started thinking a story, don’t halt it halfway thinking that it might not be appropriate. Just go on and build more story. It’s your imagination, you are flying your minds, continue it to that unknown positive story.
No anti-national or anti-social sentiments should be included in them.
It is good to be calm, positive for looking at the picture and perceive the theme to write a story.
The story must have a hero and not a superhero. This hero or main lead should have a positive mind frame to tackle complex situations with guts. He should be a man of conviction with attributes like compassion, diligence, self-confidence, perseverance, adaptability, quick response, and ambitious attitude. Just a handy tip here: Try to impose the OLQs you remember on these heroes. Don’t make a fairy tale out of it. Be grounded.
For the psychologist, you are the main hero of your story so be careful and depict only the characteristics that you have or wish to attain in your life.
If you are not able to finish the story within the given four minutes, then pass on to the next picture shown, so that you don’t miss the subsequent picture. AND NO PEEKING!
When it comes to the last BLANK PICTURE, it is advisable to write the story based on the theme of the immediately preceding picture to make the story more natural and real.
Think of similar stories that encompasses all the elements as shown in the previous pictures and make those lines and arrange them into sentences. Just try to squeeze all the OLQs here too as a conclusion from previous pictures.
Write a story as short as possible with minimum redundancy and higher relevancy.
As a final tip, I would like you to practice this daily:
Take a piece of paper, take a deep breathe in four to five times to calm down yourself. Now, think of all the words you can and jot it down, no matter how creepy or laughable the words are. It could be the name of your crush or anything else. ANYTHING. Set a timer of 2-3 mins and continue writing till the timer rings.
Try to be as fast as you can and as positive as you can. Do this before you sleep and immediately after you wake to train your brain to develop creativity and spontaneity.

NDA Exam 2022 SSB INTERVIEW: The candidates who qualify in written examination will be called for SSB Interview from the available centers in India.
Stage I – Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR), Picture perception, and Description Test.
Stage II – Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests and Conference
1. For screening test on Day-1, start solving intelligence tests questions from various books available. Write stories following all instructions like writing character details and action in the required time frame, then narrate in front of mirror to build your confidence and work on any weakness you find.
2. For psych tests, there is only thing practice, and keep on introspecting your responses not just from yourself but also from any SSB buddy you know. Initially the responses may not be up to the mark, but with consistent practice things will eventually work out for you. Try to relate the responses to your life experiences.
3. Amongst the CIQs frequent questions are asked in personal interviews, so prepare them. People will say SSB is a personality test and you can’t prepare for it. But there’s a reason SSB coaching industry is blooming. So focus on questions related to your PIQ, prepare for every section and keep on cross questioning your responses, to bring out all the responses. This is the best form of self-introspection as PIQ pretty much covers everything.
4. Other than that Also you should be aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and how are you able to utilise your strengths or how are you working to remove your weaknesses. Remember there are no specific best responses in personal interview, only the true responses (your own life experiences) are the best responses. Also have knowledge about the force you want to join, like if you want to join the Navy, then which arm do you aspire for, let’s say you said Submarine Arm, then why so, latest submarines, comparison with our neighbours, what role will you play in the submarines, evolution of Indian Submarines etc. Also latest defence deals, exercises, etc should be somethings you should know about.
5. First and foremost, thing would be to focus on your fitness. Although no one is asking you to be Bear Grylls or someone with six packs, but in tasks like GOR (Group Obstacle Race) and IO (Individual Obstacles, you will need a lot of stamina as it may so happen that immediately after the IO/GOR, lecturette/any other task will be conducted and if you are someone with less stamina you will be exhausted physically and that may take a toll on your performance. Also keeping yourself in shape helps you boost your confidence and project a positive vibe about yourself to the assessors.
6. For this you can start gyming or if you have a ground nearby start going for runs. Also if you are able to give team sports, it would be of best help to you, as nothing builds more personality than them, they bring out every aspect of you be it physical or mental toughness.
7. Improving communication skills would be of great help to you, and when I say this I don’t mean become a English speaking nerd, even if your English is just kaam-chalau that is you can explain your views properly with Hinglish it would do. Even the assessors stress on speaking the language (Hindi/English) you are comfortable with. So how to have that kaam-chalau English:
