India Announces Import Embargo on 101 Defence Items

Ministry of Defence (MoD) is now ready for a big push to Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. MoD will introduce import embargo on 101 items beyond given timeline to boost indigenisation of defence production. The list of 101 embargoed items comprises of not just simple parts but also some high tech weapon systems like artillery guns, assault rifles, corvettes, sonar systems, transport aircraft, LCHs, radars & many other items to fulfil needs of our Defence Services.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “The list of 101 embargoed items comprises of not just simple parts but also some high technology weapon systems like artillery guns, assault rifles, corvettes, sonar systems, transport aircraft, LCHs, radars and many other items to fulfil the needs of our Defence Services.”

On such items, 3 services spent ₹ 3.5 L Cr (2015-2020). Now with this embargo, ₹ 4 L Cr orders likely to be placed upon the domestic industry in next 5-7 years. Army- 1.3L Cr Navy- 1.3L Cr AF- 1.4L Cr.
