The Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kolkata has achieved a significant victory in maritime security by successfully cornering and coercing the surrender of all 35 pirates aboard a pirate vessel.
This operation took place over the last 40 hours and concluded with the safe evacuation of 17 crew members on the evening of March 16, 2024. Remarkably, this operation was executed without causing any injuries to the individuals involved.
INS Kolkata’s mission began with the interception of the Pirate Ship Ruen, which was located almost 1400 nautical miles (approximately 2600 kilometers) away from the Indian coast. The interception was a result of carefully planned and calibrated actions, which were supported by an impressive array of maritime assets.
This included the INSSubhadra, a High Altitude Long Endurance (HALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), P8I maritime patrol aircraft, and MARCOS PRAHARs (Marine Commandos Precision Heliborne Assault and Reconnaissance) who were air-dropped into the operation area by C-17 aircraft.
The coordinated efforts of these assets forced the pirate ship to halt and facilitated the successful surrender of the pirates. Following the operation, the vessel underwent a thorough sanitization process to ensure it was free from illegal arms, ammunition, and contraband.
This operation highlights the Indian Navy’s capability to conduct precise and effective maritime security operations far from its shores, showcasing the strength and reach of India’s maritime forces.
