The flash flood, triggered by a glacial lake outburst in the Teesta River, wreaked havoc across Sikkim. Among the chaos, a silent yet deadly threat emerged—200 metric tons of ammunition, washed away and scattered across 75 square kilometers. The lives of nearly 50,000 civilians hung in the balance, as unexploded ordnance posed a severe hazard to their safety.

Captain Ajay Sharma

Amidst this peril, Captain Ajay Sharma stepped forward, embodying the highest ideals of service and sacrifice. Leading the Bomb Disposal Team from October 7, 2023, he embarked on a 60-day sanitization operation across critical locations, including the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology, Majitar National Hydroelectric Power Corporation, Balutar, and IMB Rangpo.

But his mission was more than just disposing of explosives—it was about restoring faith. Captain Sharma personally visited homes, responding to the desperate calls of frightened residents. He searched their properties, not only clearing them of deadly threats but also offering comfort and reassurance. His calm presence in their darkest hour became a beacon of hope.

Through relentless effort and exceptional skill, Captain Sharma and his team neutralized over 100 hazardous unexploded ordnance (UXO), preventing potential disasters that could have claimed countless lives. His courage was unwavering—he faced death with utter disregard for personal safety, driven solely by his duty to protect civilians.

Captain Ajay Sharma’s actions epitomize the spirit of the Indian Army, where service comes before self, and bravery is a way of life. His leadership during the crisis, his selfless dedication to safeguarding lives, and his ability to restore peace amidst chaos are inspirations for generations to come.

In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, leadership, and service beyond the call of duty, Captain Ajay Sharma has been conferred with the prestigious “SENA MEDAL (GALLANTRY).”

This honor is not just a medal—it is a symbol of his sacrifice, resilience, and indomitable spirit. Captain Ajay Sharma’s story reminds us that heroes walk among us, not with capes, but with courage in their hearts and service in their actions.

His legacy stands as a shining example of valor, inspiring us all to face challenges with fortitude and to serve others with compassion and selflessness.
