In a major development for India’s national security structure, Lieutenant General N. S. Raja Subramani (Retd), former Vice Chief of the Indian Army, has been appointed as the new Military Advisor to the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). He will officially assume charge on September 1, 2025.
A highly decorated officer with a service career spanning over four decades, Lt Gen Subramani is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Indian Military Academy (IMA). Over the years, he has commanded key formations including serving as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command and Chief of Staff, making him one of the Army’s most accomplished leaders.
This appointment comes as part of NSCS’s continued efforts to strengthen its advisory setup. In 2024, the Secretariat created the post of an Additional National Security Advisor to improve interdepartmental coordination and decision-making on emerging threats. The addition of a seasoned military mind like Lt Gen Subramani marks a significant step toward enhancing India’s strategic preparedness.
The move comes at a crucial juncture, especially after incidents like the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack, linked to the TRF-Pakistan network, which highlighted the urgent need for sharper counter-terror frameworks. According to a study by the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), the inclusion of experienced military advisors in security structures can reduce crisis decision-making delays by up to 30%.
Lt Gen Subramani’s transition from active command to this high-level advisory role is expected to strengthen India’s national security framework and provide crucial military insights as the nation navigates an increasingly complex and volatile regional security environment.
