A rifle and ammunition went missing from a sentry post in the Indian Navy’s residential area in Mumbai on the night of September 6, triggering a major search operation and multiple investigations.
According to official sources, a junior sailor on sentry duty was allegedly approached by another individual dressed in naval uniform, who claimed to have been deputed to relieve him. The sailor handed over his post, but later it was discovered that the individual — along with the rifle and ammunition — had disappeared.
An extensive search operation has been launched to trace the missing weapon and ammunition, with Mumbai Police coordinating efforts alongside naval authorities.
The Indian Navy has ordered a Board of Inquiry to determine the circumstances leading to the incident. The case is also being investigated by other government agencies, with the Navy extending full cooperation.
Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of foul play, and efforts are on to ascertain the identity of the impersonator who managed to gain access in naval attire.
