The incident occurred at around 4:30 pm in the S4 compartment of the train en route to Dibrugarh, when the infant suddenly suffered respiratory arrest and became unresponsive. The child’s mother, overcome with fear, fainted as panic spread among fellow passengers.

Sepoy Sunil, who happened to be travelling in the same coach after returning from leave, immediately sprang into action. Demonstrating calm and decisive judgment, he quickly assessed the infant’s condition, discovering the child had no pulse or breathing.

Without hesitation, he placed the baby on a flat surface and commenced paediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) using two fingers on the chest, followed by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. After two cycles, the infant began showing signs of life.

Sunil then coordinated with train staff and the Railway Police to ensure the infant’s safe evacuation and further medical care at Rangiya station. His timely intervention prevented what could have been a tragic outcome in a situation where immediate medical assistance was unavailable.

The Indian Army lauded Sepoy Sunil for his exceptional medical proficiency, quick thinking, and unwavering sense of duty, noting that his actions directly contributed to saving a precious life.

This incident highlights the indomitable spirit and readiness of Indian Army personnel to serve not just on the battlefield, but in emergencies wherever duty calls.
