Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is gearing up to conduct the maiden flight test of the first TEJAS MK-1A fighter jet from its Nashik facility on October 17, according to reports. The milestone will mark a major leap for Indiaโ€™s indigenous defence manufacturing sector.

The Nashik unit, inaugurated as HALโ€™s third production line for the TEJAS MK-1A, has been configured to manufacture up to eight jets annually, boosting overall production capacity to 24 aircraft per year when combined with the two existing Bengaluru lines.

Initially slated for rollout in May, the test was postponed due to technical issues. With recent clearances from the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA), the facility is now ready for flight trials. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is expected to attend the maiden flight, though official confirmation is awaited.

Overcoming Delays and Supply Challenges
Production schedules faced setbacks owing to limitations in the supply of GE-404 engines. However, recent deliveries have helped HAL overcome these hurdles, allowing the Nashik plant to move forward with testing and subsequent deliveries to the Indian Air Force (IAF) before the end of 2025.

A 4.5-Generation Fighter with 40+ Enhancements
The TEJAS MK-1A is a 4.5-generation combat aircraft featuring over 40 upgrades compared to its predecessor. It is equipped with the indigenous Uttam AESA radar, advanced electronic warfare suites, digital fly-by-wire controls, and enhanced aerodynamics for superior manoeuvrability. The aircraft also supports in-flight refuelling, faster maintenance turnaround, and a wide range of weapon systems, including beyond-visual-range (BVR) missiles.

With 70% indigenous content projected in the coming years, the TEJAS MK-1A plays a crucial role in replacing the ageing MiG-21 fleet and enhancing the IAFโ€™s combat strength. HAL is on track to deliver the first two aircraft shortly after the maiden flight.

Strategic Boost to Indiaโ€™s Defence Industry
The Nashik division, employing over 2,200 personnel including 1,188 technical experts and 395 engineers, represents a cornerstone of Indiaโ€™s aerospace ecosystem. The launch of the TEJAS MK-1A from Nashik is seen as a new chapter in Indiaโ€™s aerospace capability, underscoring the countryโ€™s ability to absorb advanced technologies and scale up indigenous fighter jet production.

The upcoming flight not only bolsters Indiaโ€™s quest for self-reliance in defence but also strengthens its ambitions in the global aviation market.
