Partner nations are now viewing India not merely as a regional military power but as a credible global technology provider — capable of designing, developing, and delivering complete defence systems. This transformation is a major step toward India’s goal of becoming a global defence manufacturing and export hub.

At the heart of this transformation lies the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Once a purely research-oriented body, DRDO has evolved into a powerhouse of innovation, industrial collaboration, and export-oriented development.

“Our mission today goes beyond research. We are shaping systems that define future warfare — for India and for the world,” said the DRDO Chief, highlighting how indigenous technologies are gaining traction globally.

Flagship systems like the Akash and Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) complexes have become benchmarks of India’s engineering and production capabilities. These all-weather systems — integrating indigenous radar, propulsion, and guidance technologies — have attracted interest from nations across Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America, drawn by their reliability and cost efficiency.

India’s Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system, developed by DRDO and mounted on an Embraer platform, has also emerged as a symbol of India’s aerospace sophistication. It enhances situational awareness and network-centric warfare, offering friendly nations a viable alternative to Western surveillance systems.

A breakthrough in modern battlefield defence, DRDO’s D4 Anti-Drone Air Defence System (AADS), developed in partnership with Indian private firms, has proven instrumental in countering UAV threats. Equipped with advanced sensors, jammers, and directed-energy weapons, the system gained global attention during Operation Sindoor, prompting several countries to express interest in similar anti-drone defences.

India’s BrahMos cruise missile, jointly developed by DRDO and Russia’s NPO Mashinostroyenia, continues to be the country’s most successful export weapon. Following its landmark sale to the Philippines, India is in advanced talks with Vietnam, Indonesia, and other Indo-Pacific partners, further solidifying its role as a key arms supplier in the region.

The DRDO Chief also emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving India’s export goals. Companies like Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), Larsen & Toubro (L&T), and several MSMEs are contributing to an ecosystem that allows rapid, scalable, and customer-specific production.

Operation Sindoor played a pivotal role in showcasing India’s defence readiness under real combat conditions — from precision air strikes to counter-UAV operations — validating years of indigenous technological advancements.

With the government targeting ₹50,000 crore in defence exports by 2029, India’s defence sector is on an accelerated trajectory. Policies such as the Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy (DPEPP) and investments in defence industrial corridors are further strengthening this momentum.

Ultimately, India’s defence narrative has shifted — from self-reliance (Atmanirbharta) to global relevance. With DRDO-led systems like Akash, MRSAM, AEW&C, D4, and BrahMos gaining international traction, India is no longer just securing its borders — it is shaping the future of global defence innovation.
