“Legacy to Lethal — Powered by Innovation.” This message resonated strongly as Lt Gen Rajiv Kumar Sahni, Director General of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (DGEME), visited the 506 Army Base Workshop in Jabalpur, a premier Centre of Excellence in Armament Engineering and one of the Indian Army’s key strategic facilities.
During the visit, Lt Gen Sahni reviewed several advanced initiatives that are reshaping the Army’s armament ecosystem. These included the automation of legacy field guns under Project NAVYAS, a major capability-enhancement programme aimed at extending the operational relevance of older platforms through modern digital upgrades. He also examined the EV-based repowering of the iconic Bofors artillery system, a pioneering step that combines sustainability with enhanced efficiency—ensuring quieter, cleaner and more responsive operations without compromising firepower.
The workshop also showcased key indigenous manufacturing processes, reflecting the Army’s continued thrust towards Atmanirbharta in defence production. These innovations mark a decisive shift from old-generation platforms to smarter, technology-enabled and energy-efficient systems, strengthening precision, versatility and mission endurance on the battlefield.
Lt Gen Sahni appreciated the dedication, technical expertise and innovation-driven mindset of all ranks at the workshop. He emphasised that their efforts are critical in integrating modern technology into weapon systems, boosting operational readiness and ensuring the Indian Army remains agile, lethal and future-ready.
