Major Mustafa Bohara

Major Mustafa Bohara of the Indian Army Aviation Corps remains a powerful symbol of courage, professionalism, and selfless service. Awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously, he made the supreme sacrifice on 21 October 2022 at the young age of 27 while carrying out an Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) mission in Arunachal Pradesh. His final act—steering a burning helicopter away from populated areas—saved countless civilian lives and upheld the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

Born on 14 May 1995 in Kheroda village of Udaipur district, Rajasthan, Major Bohara grew up in a family rooted in strong values of integrity and duty. His father, Shri Zakiuddin Bohara, worked in Kuwait, while his mother, Smt. Fatima Bohara, played a central role in shaping his disciplined upbringing. From an early age, he was driven by a clear ambition—to serve the nation in uniform.

He began his education at Uday Shiksha Mandir in Kheroda and later studied at St. Paul’s School in Udaipur. His determination and focus led him to the National Defence Academy (NDA), Khadakwasla, where he was selected for the 128th Course. After successfully completing his training, he proceeded to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, and was commissioned into the Mahar Regiment as a Lieutenant.

Driven by a passion for flying, Major Bohara volunteered for the Army Aviation Corps. He underwent rigorous training, including advanced flying instruction at the Combat Army Aviation School in Nashik. Over time, he qualified as a proficient pilot on the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH-WSI) Rudra, one of the Army’s key combat platforms. By 2022, he had risen to the rank of Major and was serving with the 252 Army Aviation Squadron in the North-East, operating in challenging mountainous and high-altitude conditions.

On the morning of 21 October 2022, Major Bohara was part of a five-member crew tasked with an ISR mission near the Indo-China border. He was flying as co-pilot alongside Major Vikas Bhambhu. The mission was proceeding as planned until approximately 10:28 AM, when the helicopter suffered a catastrophic fire mid-air near Migging in Upper Siang district. The aircraft began losing altitude rapidly, and control became extremely difficult.

Faced with a life-threatening emergency, the pilots had limited options. They could attempt an emergency landing in a nearby open area, but doing so would have put civilian lives at grave risk and potentially triggered an explosion due to the proximity of an ammunition storage point. In those critical moments, Major Bohara and his fellow pilot made a conscious decision—to prioritise the safety of others over their own survival.

Displaying exceptional composure and flying skill under extreme stress, they steered the burning helicopter away from inhabited zones and directed it toward a remote, uninhabited mountainous area. The aircraft eventually crash-landed at around 10:43 AM. All five personnel on board lost their lives in the crash, but their actions prevented what could have been a far greater tragedy on the ground.

In recognition of this extraordinary act of bravery, Major Mustafa Bohara was awarded the Shaurya Chakra (Posthumous) by President Droupadi Murmu on 15 August 2023. The award was formally presented to his parents at a Defence Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 5 July 2024. The official citation highlighted the pilots’ exceptional courage, presence of mind, and unwavering commitment to saving lives even in the face of certain death.

At the time of the incident, Major Bohara was engaged and preparing for his wedding, making the loss even more profound for his family. Yet, in the face of unimaginable grief, his mother’s words captured the spirit of a soldier’s legacy: soldiers never truly die—they live on in the hearts of the nation they serve.

Major Mustafa Bohara’s journey—from a small village in Rajasthan to the skies of Arunachal Pradesh—reflects the essence of dedication, courage, and sacrifice. His actions on that fateful day stand as a reminder of the silent heroism that defines India’s armed forces. By choosing to save others over himself, he not only upheld the ethos of “Service Before Self” but also etched his name among the nation’s bravest.
