Air Marshal Jasvir Singh Mann, AVSM, VM, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the Indian Air Force’s Southern Air Command, visited Air Force Station Thanjavur on July 15 and 16, 2026, to review its operational preparedness and assess the readiness of its frontline units. The visit highlighted the Indian Air Force’s continued emphasis on maintaining high standards of mission readiness, strengthening maritime operational capabilities and fostering greater jointness with sister services in safeguarding India’s strategic interests across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The Air Marshal was accorded a Ceremonial Guard of Honour upon his arrival at the station, reflecting the significance of the visit. During his stay, he received comprehensive briefings on the station’s operational activities, capability development initiatives and mission preparedness measures undertaken to address contemporary and emerging security challenges.

Air Force Station Thanjavur occupies a strategically important position within the Southern Air Command’s area of responsibility and plays a vital role in enhancing India’s maritime air power capabilities. Its operational assets significantly contribute towards ensuring effective surveillance, deterrence and rapid response capabilities across the Indian Ocean Region, which remains central to India’s national security and maritime interests.

During the visit, Air Marshal Jasvir Singh Mann reviewed the operational preparedness of the station’s frontline units and assessed their ability to effectively execute assigned missions across a diverse spectrum of operational scenarios. The review focused on maintaining combat readiness through rigorous training standards, technological proficiency and continuous capability enhancement initiatives.

As part of his operational engagements, the Southern Air Command Chief undertook a maritime mission sortie aboard a Su-30 aircraft to strengthen operational synergy with the Indian Navy. The sortie underscored the growing importance of jointness and inter-service cooperation in addressing contemporary maritime security challenges. Seamless coordination between the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy remains indispensable in ensuring effective maritime domain awareness and safeguarding India’s strategic interests across the Indo-Pacific region.

The Su-30 aircraft continues to serve as one of the Indian Air Force’s most versatile and formidable combat platforms, capable of undertaking a wide range of missions including maritime strike operations, air superiority roles and long-range strategic deployments. Its integration into maritime operations significantly enhances India’s ability to project air power across vast maritime spaces while complementing naval operational capabilities.

Air Marshal Jasvir Singh Mann also interacted extensively with the Air Warriors stationed at Air Force Station Thanjavur, appreciating their professionalism, dedication and commitment towards maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence. He acknowledged their invaluable contribution towards strengthening the Indian Air Force’s mission capabilities and ensuring sustained combat readiness.

Addressing the personnel, the AOC-in-C stressed the importance of realistic and mission-oriented training in preparing for contemporary operational challenges. He observed that rigorous training standards remain fundamental to maintaining combat effectiveness and fostering adaptability in an increasingly complex security environment. Continuous professional development and operational proficiency, he emphasised, are essential attributes of a future-ready air force.

The Air Marshal also highlighted the need for meticulous upkeep and maintenance of all operational equipment and platforms. Effective maintenance practices play a critical role in ensuring mission availability, operational reliability and sustained force readiness, particularly in demanding operational environments where responsiveness and precision remain paramount.

In his address, the Southern Air Command Chief exhorted all personnel to continue striving for excellence while upholding the highest standards of safety, discipline and mission preparedness. He reaffirmed that safety and operational discipline remain non-negotiable pillars of military professionalism and are integral to sustaining the Indian Air Force’s tradition of excellence across all operational domains.

Air Marshal Jasvir Singh Mann also underscored the strategic importance of maintaining a high state of preparedness within the Indian Ocean Region. As maritime security challenges continue to evolve, the Indian Air Force remains committed to strengthening its capabilities to effectively contribute towards ensuring regional stability, safeguarding sea lines of communication and protecting India’s national interests across the maritime domain.

The visit to Air Force Station Thanjavur reflects the Indian Air Force’s sustained focus on operational excellence, technological advancement and joint operational preparedness.
