Assam Rifles Rescues Missing 10-Year-Old Boy from Train in Tripura, Reunites Him with Family in Dimapur

Agartala/Tripura, August 25, 2026: In a swift and compassionate act of vigilance, Assam Rifles personnel successfully located and ensured the safe return of a 10-year-old boy who had gone missing from Dimapur, Nagaland. The child, identified as Joseph Mao of Neisatuo Colony, was found travelling alone on a train in Tripura and has been reunited with his family following coordinated efforts by the force and local police.

Joseph Mao was reported missing from his home in Neisatuo Colony, Dimapur, on August 22, 2026. The following day, August 23, Rifleman Lawrance Hrangkhawl of the Assam Rifles noticed the unaccompanied boy on a train originating from Dimapur while it was in Tripura. The child was carrying a school bag but had no adult with him. When questioned, he could neither provide his exact home address nor explain how or why he had boarded the train.

Displaying sharp alertness and presence of mind, Rifleman Hrangkhawl immediately reported the matter to the Adjutant. He then took the boy to the Assam Rifles location at Radhanagar in Tripura (near Agartala) to ensure his safety and begin verification. Personnel at the facility promptly initiated efforts to establish the child’s identity and trace his family.

During the verification process, the team located a missing-person appeal that had been circulated on Instagram. This post confirmed the boy’s identity as Joseph Mao. His parents were contacted without delay and informed that their son was safe and under the care of Assam Rifles. Local police authorities were also notified to facilitate necessary coordination for the child’s safe handover and return home.

The official Assam Rifles statement highlighted the incident as a demonstration of the force’s commitment to protecting and assisting the community. It noted that the prompt humanitarian response ensured the child’s safe recovery and reunion with his family, while helping prevent potential harm. The force underscored the values of operational readiness, community service, and “Service Before Self.”

This episode underscores the dual role Assam Rifles personnel often play in the Northeast — not only as guardians of security along sensitive borders and in counter-insurgency environments, but also as first responders in civilian humanitarian situations. Trains remain a common mode of travel across the region, and unaccompanied minors can face significant risks. The quick intervention by a single alert rifleman, followed by systematic verification using modern tools such as social media, illustrates how ground-level awareness combined with institutional processes can deliver rapid results.

For the family in Dimapur, the ordeal that began on August 22 ended in relief within a short span. For the Assam Rifles, the successful reunion of Joseph Mao with his parents stands as a quiet but meaningful example of community-first action by the “Sentinels of the Northeast.”

The matter was handled in close coordination with civil police to ensure all procedural requirements for the child’s safe return were met. No further details regarding the circumstances that led the boy to board the train alone have been publicly disclosed by authorities.
