A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan has been arrested for the alleged murder of his wife in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab after he reportedly claimed she died in an accidental fall from the roof of their house. Police registered a case following a complaint by the woman’s family, who alleged prolonged harassment, physical assault, and an attempt to stage the death as an accident.
The accused has been identified as Amarjit Singh (also referred to as Amarjeet in some reports), a resident of Shekhamatta (also spelled Shekhanmatta or Sunehra) village near Hajipur in Hoshiarpur. His wife, Rama, died on the intervening night of 13-14 August 2026. The couple had been married for about 12 years and have two children — a son and a daughter.
Timeline of the Incident
According to the family’s complaint and police accounts, Amarjit Singh was home on leave. On the night of 13 August, he allegedly assaulted Rama at their residence. Around 4 a.m. on 14 August, he informed the family — specifically calling Rama’s uncle Malkeet Singh in one account — that she had fallen from the roof and sustained serious injuries. She was taken to the Civil Hospital (also referred to as Government Hospital) in Hajipur.
Ram Chand, Rama’s father, and other relatives rushed to the hospital. They found her dead. Family members observed multiple injury marks on her head and body, which raised strong suspicions that she had been beaten rather than injured in a fall. They alleged that the “roof fall” explanation was fabricated to divert attention from the actual cause of death.
Family’s Allegations of Long-Standing Abuse
In the complaint that led to the FIR, Ram Chand stated that his daughter had faced harassment and physical assault by her husband since the marriage. One specific allegation was pressure on Rama to bring her share of parental property. Relatives claimed she had been assaulted on several occasions over the years.
About three to four months before the fatal incident, Amarjit allegedly beat Rama again. The two families reportedly reached a compromise at that time. The latest episode, the family alleged, was a continuation of the same pattern of violence, ending in her death.
Police have also named Amarjit’s uncle Kuldeep (alias Kuki) and aunt Sonia in the case. The family alleged that the assault occurred at their instigation or with their involvement in the subsequent cover-up attempt. Both remain absconding.

Hajipur Police Station registered a murder case on the basis of Ram Chand’s complaint. Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Harprem Singh (also referred to as Harpreet Singh in some reports) confirmed that Amarjit Singh has been arrested and that further investigation is underway.
A post-mortem examination was conducted. The body was later handed over to the family for last rites, which were to be performed in her native village. Police are examining evidence, recording statements, and ascertaining the precise sequence of events, including the alleged roles of the other two accused.
