Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Dhiraj Seth felicitated four distinguished Indian Army veterans with the prestigious Yoddha Seva Samman (YSS) during his visit to Lucknow, recognising their exceptional contributions to society long after hanging up their uniforms. The honour celebrates veterans who continue to serve the nation through selfless work in areas such as national security, healthcare, education, humanitarian service, agriculture, sports, environmental conservation and veteran welfare.
The Yoddha Seva Samman, carrying the motto “Karm Se Gaurav, Seva Se Vijay” (Honour Through Action, Victory Through Service), embodies the enduring spirit of a soldier whose commitment to the nation extends far beyond active military service. The award recognises individuals who have transformed their military values of discipline, courage and selfless service into meaningful contributions that positively impact society.
Addressing the gathering, General Dhiraj Seth emphasised that a soldier never truly retires. While military service may conclude, the ideals of duty, integrity and service continue to guide veterans in their post-retirement lives. He noted that the award celebrates those who have remained steadfast in serving the nation through community leadership and public welfare.

Among the awardees was Major General Harsh Kakar (Retd), who was honoured for his distinguished contributions to national security and strategic thought. Following an illustrious military career that included service in United Nations peacekeeping missions, he has remained actively engaged in strengthening India’s strategic discourse as a Founder Member and Vice Chairman of STRIVE India. Through his writings, public lectures and expert analysis, he continues to contribute significantly to debates on defence, geopolitics and national security.
Colonel Arvind Singh Kushwaha (Retd) received the Yoddha Seva Samman for his outstanding service in healthcare and medical education. After retirement, he played a pivotal role in the establishment of AIIMS Nagpur and contributed extensively to strengthening healthcare infrastructure. His efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic in Maharashtra and his role in developing medical colleges in Arunachal Pradesh have had a lasting impact on public health and medical education, reflecting his continued dedication to national service.

Naib Subedar Radhey Shyam (Retd) was recognised for his exceptional humanitarian work. Driven by compassion and a deep sense of responsibility towards fellow veterans and the underprivileged, he established an old-age home using his personal resources. The facility provides shelter, food and medical care to ex-servicemen, war widows and economically disadvantaged individuals. His tireless efforts have earned widespread admiration and numerous honours for his commitment to social welfare.
Risaldar Major (Honorary Captain) Vijay Kumar (Retd) was felicitated for his remarkable contribution to veteran welfare and youth empowerment. Through his own initiative and personal resources, he established a Sainik Library and Motivation Centre that offers free career counselling, study material and computer training to aspiring youth and ex-servicemen. His initiative has enabled many young people to prepare for competitive examinations and pursue meaningful careers while also supporting the rehabilitation and development of the veteran community.

The Yoddha Seva Samman reflects the Indian Army’s belief that the spirit of service does not end with retirement. By honouring veterans who continue to make meaningful contributions in civilian life, the Army seeks to inspire both serving personnel and society to recognise the enduring value of selfless service, leadership and commitment to nation-building.
The ceremony also highlighted the invaluable role played by veterans in strengthening communities across the country. Through their expertise, experience and unwavering dedication, they continue to uphold the finest traditions of the Indian Army while making significant contributions to national development and social progress.
