The General Officer Commanding, Golden Arrow Division, flagged off the Gunners Mountaineering Expedition to Mount Kamet, one of the most challenging high-altitude peaks in the Indian Himalayas, as part of the celebrations marking the Bicentenary of the Regiment of Artillery.
Standing at 7,756 metres, Mount Kamet is located in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Its extreme altitude, demanding terrain and harsh mountain conditions make an expedition to the summit a formidable test of physical endurance, mental resilience, technical skill and teamwork.
The expedition is being undertaken as a tribute to two centuries of service and sacrifice by the Regiment of Artillery. The participating personnel will carry forward the proud legacy of the Gunners while testing their endurance and determination in one of the most demanding high-altitude environments.
The expedition is also intended to embody the core attributes associated with the Gunner fraternity, including courage, precision, discipline, teamwork and an unwavering commitment to mission accomplishment.
The GOC Golden Arrow Division encouraged the expedition members as they embarked on the challenging mountaineering mission. The expedition is expected to provide the participants with an opportunity to demonstrate their physical and psychological resilience while operating in a demanding Himalayan environment.
Mount Kamet has historically been an important objective for Indian Army mountaineering expeditions. An Indian Army expedition to the 7,756-metre peak was conducted in 2018 under the Army Adventure Wing, while Army mountaineers have also successfully attempted the peak on other occasions.
For the Gunners, the expedition carries additional significance as it forms part of the Bicentenary celebrations of the Regiment of Artillery. The milestone provides an opportunity to connect the Regiment’s historic legacy with contemporary challenges requiring adaptability, endurance and specialised skills.
The expedition will test the participants’ ability to function as a cohesive team in extreme conditions, where careful planning, physical conditioning, acclimatisation and disciplined execution are essential for success.
Beyond the mountaineering challenge itself, the expedition represents the Indian Army’s emphasis on adventure activities as a means of developing leadership, resilience, teamwork and confidence among its personnel.
