Lieutenant General Sandeep Jain, Vice Chief of the Army Staff (VCOAS), visited key military and defence establishments in and around Jabalpur, where he reviewed operational preparedness, indigenous defence manufacturing initiatives, training standards and ongoing infrastructure development.
During the visit, the Vice Chief of the Army Staff inspected the Ordnance Factory Khamaria and reviewed various initiatives being undertaken by the establishment to meet the operational and logistical requirements of the Indian Army.
Lt Gen Sandeep Jain was briefed on the factory’s ongoing activities and efforts aimed at supporting the Army’s requirements through domestic production. He also assessed initiatives being pursued to promote Atmanirbharta, or self-reliance, in defence manufacturing and strengthen India’s wider defence industrial ecosystem.
Ordnance Factory Khamaria, located near Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, is an important defence production establishment associated with the manufacture of ammunition and related products required by the Armed Forces. Its role assumes greater significance as India continues to expand indigenous manufacturing capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign sources for critical defence requirements.
The VCOAS’s review highlighted the close relationship between operational preparedness and a reliable domestic defence manufacturing base. Ensuring timely availability of ammunition, equipment and other essential military stores remains an important component of sustaining forces during both peacetime preparedness and operational deployments.
The emphasis on Atmanirbharta has also encouraged defence establishments to focus increasingly on indigenous technologies, modern manufacturing practices and greater integration with India’s evolving defence industrial ecosystem.
Following his visit to the ordnance factory, Lt Gen Sandeep Jain visited Headquarters Madhya Bharat Area, where he reviewed the formation’s operational readiness and preparedness for a range of responsibilities.
A significant component of the review was the formation’s specialised Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) preparedness. The Indian Army frequently plays an important role in assisting civil authorities during natural disasters and major emergencies, making specialised training, equipment and rapid mobilisation capabilities essential.
The Vice Chief also reviewed training activities and ongoing infrastructure development initiatives at Headquarters Madhya Bharat Area. Modern and resilient military infrastructure contributes significantly to the ability of formations to train effectively, maintain equipment and respond rapidly when required.
Lt Gen Sandeep Jain subsequently visited the Military College of Material Management (MCMM) in Jabalpur. During his interaction at the institution, he reviewed its preparedness, training standards and infrastructure development.
The Military College of Material Management plays an important role in developing professional expertise related to logistics and material management. Efficient logistics are fundamental to military effectiveness, ensuring that personnel deployed across diverse operational environments receive the equipment, stores and resources necessary to sustain operations.
Contemporary military logistics has also become increasingly dependent on technology, data-driven management and modern supply-chain practices. Training institutions therefore have an important responsibility to prepare personnel to manage complex logistics networks under both routine and operational conditions.
During his visits, the VCOAS appreciated the high standards of professionalism and technological innovation demonstrated by personnel and establishments.
His review across defence manufacturing, formation readiness, HADR preparedness and military logistics reflected the interconnected nature of modern operational capability. Combat effectiveness depends not only on frontline formations but also on a robust network of manufacturing facilities, logistics organisations, training establishments and supporting infrastructure.
Lt Gen Sandeep Jain exhorted all ranks to continue maintaining the highest standards of combat proficiency and remain prepared to address emerging and future challenges.
The visit underscored the Indian Army’s continued focus on operational readiness while simultaneously strengthening indigenous defence production, technological innovation, logistics capabilities and specialised training.
By reviewing Ordnance Factory Khamaria, Headquarters Madhya Bharat Area and the Military College of Material Management, the Vice Chief of the Army Staff assessed several critical components of the Army’s preparedness—from the domestic production of essential defence requirements to formation-level readiness and the training of personnel responsible for sustaining military operations.
The engagements also reinforced the importance of Atmanirbharta and technological adaptation as the Indian Army prepares for an increasingly complex security environment and evolving character of warfare.
