Lieutenant Stanzin Tsangyang Becomes Zanskar's First Woman Indian Army Officer

Lieutenant Stanzin Tsangyang has created history by becoming the first woman from Zanskar in Ladakh to be commissioned as an officer in the Indian Army. The 24-year-old received her commission at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, on 5 September 2026, completing an inspiring journey from a remote Himalayan village to the officer ranks of the Indian Army.

Her commissioning took place during the Passing Out Parade of the SSC-122 and SSC (Women)-36 courses at OTA Chennai. A total of 342 Officer Cadets were commissioned on the occasion, including 29 women, while 17 cadets from friendly foreign countries also completed their training. The parade was reviewed by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan.

Lieutenant Stanzin Tsangyang hails from a small village in the Zanskar Valley, one of Ladakh’s most remote high-altitude regions, known for its severe winters, difficult terrain and geographical isolation. She is the youngest daughter of Tundup Tsering, a retired teacher, and Rigzin Ladol, a homemaker. Her family had no previous military background, making her achievement even more significant.

She left home at a young age for her education and studied at Lamdon Model School in Leh. She spent nearly 14 years living in hostels, an experience that helped her develop independence and resilience from an early age.

Tsangyang later pursued Mechanical Engineering at Tezpur University in Assam with the support of a scholarship. Alongside academics, she had a strong sporting background and competed as a national-level volleyball player until 2016. Her years in sport helped develop the physical fitness, discipline and teamwork that would later prove valuable during her military journey.

It was during her university years that her ambition to become an Army officer began to take shape. She joined the National Cadet Corps with the 5 Assam Battalion NCC, where she was introduced to the various officer-entry opportunities available in the Indian Army.

Tsangyang has recalled that during Classes 11 and 12 she was uncertain about her career, with engineering, medicine and law appearing to be among the few obvious choices. She initially chose engineering, but her exposure to the NCC eventually gave her a new direction. The Army’s active lifestyle, emphasis on physical fitness and opportunities for leadership attracted her towards a career in uniform.

Her journey to the Officers Training Academy was not achieved in a single attempt. In an earlier Combined Defence Services attempt, Tsangyang was placed at Rank 45 in the merit list but could not secure a vacancy. Instead of giving up on her ambition, she prepared and attempted the selection process again.

Her persistence paid off in the Combined Defence Services Examination (II), 2024, when she secured All India Rank 6 in the OTA Women merit list. She subsequently cleared the Services Selection Board interview at Allahabad and earned her place at OTA Chennai.

The achievement was particularly notable because Tsangyang came from a region where guidance regarding competitive military officer-entry examinations was limited. She has spoken about the absence of people in her district who could guide aspiring candidates through the process. Support from her family and her determination helped her continue despite the uncertainty and earlier setback.

She eventually joined the 36th Short Service Commission Women (Non-Technical) course at OTA Chennai. Months of rigorous military training followed, preparing her physically and mentally for the responsibilities of leading soldiers as a commissioned officer.

Her journey culminated on 5 September 2026 when she marched at the Passing Out Parade and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army.

Her parents travelled from Ladakh to Chennai to witness their daughter’s commissioning, reportedly making their first visit to the city. For the family, the occasion was especially significant as Tsangyang became the first person from their household to join the Army as a commissioned officer.

Tezpur University also celebrated the achievement of its Mechanical Engineering alumna and former NCC cadet, congratulating her on her commissioning into the Indian Army.

Lieutenant Stanzin Tsangyang’s achievement carries significance beyond her personal success. Coming from a remote Himalayan region with limited exposure to established officer-entry pathways, she progressed from years of hostel life and an engineering education to overcoming an unsuccessful attempt, securing All India Rank 6 and ultimately earning her commission.

Her journey now stands as an example for young women from Zanskar, Ladakh and other remote parts of the country who aspire to serve in the Armed Forces.

She did not inherit a military legacy; she created one. From the mountains of Zanskar to the parade ground of OTA Chennai, Lieutenant Stanzin Tsangyang has opened a new chapter for her family and her region as Zanskar’s first woman officer in the Indian Army.
