A change of command took place at Chetak Corps on August 31, 2026, with Lt Gen Shamsher Singh Virk, AVSM, SM, relinquishing command and handing over the baton to Lt Gen Vikrant Suresh Deshpande, AVSM.
Lt Gen Vikrant S Deshpande, a highly experienced officer with an illustrious career in the Indian Army, assumed command with a mandate to further strengthen the Corps’ operational effectiveness and combat readiness.
On assuming command, Lt Gen Deshpande exhorted all ranks to maintain the momentum of ongoing efforts towards enhancing operational preparedness and combat capability. He called upon Chetak Warriors to remain focused on their operational responsibilities and continue striving for the highest standards of professionalism.
Lt Gen Shamsher Singh Virk had assumed command of Chetak Corps on May 21, 2025, and led the formation for more than a year. During his tenure, the Corps focused on strengthening operational readiness, jointness and military-civil synergy.
His leadership also placed emphasis on mission readiness and the welfare of personnel, including efforts aimed at enhancing the overall “Happiness Quotient” of all ranks. These initiatives contributed to a people-centric approach alongside the Corps’ operational responsibilities.
The change of command marks the beginning of a new chapter for Chetak Corps, with Lt Gen Deshpande taking forward the operational priorities and institutional initiatives established during the previous tenure.
The Sapta Shakti Command congratulated Lt Gen Vikrant S Deshpande on assuming command and extended its best wishes to Lt Gen Shamsher Singh Virk for his future assignment.
