Lieutenant Vikas Gautam

For many young defence aspirants, becoming an officer in the Indian Army is a dream pursued through examinations, SSB interviews and years of preparation. Lieutenant Vikas Gautam’s journey took a different route one that began at the ground level as an Agniveer and eventually led him to the stars of a commissioned officer.

Hailing from a small village in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, Vikas Gautam was commissioned into the Indian Army on 5 September 2026 after successfully completing his training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Gaya.

Vikas had nurtured the ambition of wearing the olive-green uniform from an early age. After completing his B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering, he attempted to pursue his dream through the National Defence Academy route but could not make it through. Instead of allowing that setback to end his ambition, he chose another path into the Armed Forces.

He joined the Indian Army as an Agniveer under the Agnipath scheme. Becoming a soldier brought him closer to the organisation he had always wanted to serve, but the dream of earning an officer’s commission remained alive.

As an Agniveer, Vikas was posted to The Scinde Horse (14 Horse) of the Indian Army’s Armoured Corps. There, he served as a gunner on the T-90 Bhishma main battle tank.

Life in an armoured regiment gave him firsthand experience of military discipline, teamwork, precision and operational responsibility. Instead of learning about the Army only through books and preparation material, Vikas was now experiencing military life from the ground level.

Every day spent serving alongside soldiers strengthened his determination to become an officer. His time as an Agniveer was not the end of his journey; it became the foundation upon which he would build the next stage of his career.

Even while fulfilling his responsibilities as a soldier, Vikas continued preparing for the Services Selection Board interview. He eventually cleared the SSB, earning an opportunity to undergo officer training at OTA Gaya.

It marked a remarkable transition. The young soldier who had served inside a T-90 tank was now entering an academy that would prepare him to lead soldiers as a commissioned officer.

Officer training brought another demanding chapter. OTA tested his physical endurance, mental resilience, decision-making, discipline and leadership. Vikas not only completed those challenges but distinguished himself during training.

He led the academy in Cross Country and secured a Gold Medal. He also received a Merit Card in Physical Training and set a record in the Battle Obstacle Course, demonstrating the physical fitness and determination that had characterised his journey.

His leadership qualities were also recognised when he was given the appointment of Senior Under Officer during his training at OTA Gaya.

On 5 September 2026, Vikas Gautam marched onto the parade ground for OTA Gaya’s 29th Passing Out Parade. At the end of that journey awaited something he had pursued through setbacks, military service, SSB preparation and demanding academy training the stars of a commissioned officer.

He was commissioned as Lieutenant Vikas Gautam of the Indian Army.

The moment represented much more than the completion of officer training. It marked the culmination of a journey in which he repeatedly found another way forward whenever the original path did not work out.

He had entered the Indian Army as an Agniveer. He had served as a T-90 tank gunner. He had prepared for and cleared the SSB while serving. He had excelled physically and demonstrated leadership at OTA Gaya. Finally, he walked out of the academy as an Indian Army officer.

Lieutenant Vikas Gautam’s story carries a powerful message for every defence aspirant: there is rarely only one road to the uniform.

Not clearing an examination or selection process does not necessarily mean the dream is over. A setback can become experience, experience can build character, and character can prepare a person for opportunities that lie further ahead.

Vikas did not allow an unsuccessful attempt through the NDA route to decide the rest of his story. He entered the Army through another door, learned the profession as a soldier and continued working towards his ambition of becoming an officer.

From a small village in Himachal Pradesh to the crew compartment of a T-90 Bhishma, from serving as an Agniveer with The Scinde Horse to training at OTA Gaya, Lieutenant Vikas Gautam’s journey stands as an inspiring example of perseverance, ambition and determination.
