A 33-year-old Border Security Force jawan from Tripura, Premjay Sarkar, died of cardiac arrest while on duty in Delhi, according to local reports. His mortal remains were brought to Agartala and accorded a guard of honour before being taken to his village.
Premjay Sarkar, son of Rabindra Sarkar, was a resident of Rangutia village under the Bamutia Assembly constituency in West Tripura. Reports state that he joined the BSF on 1 June 2011 and was serving with the 40th Battalion, posted at the BSF headquarters in Delhi.
According to Tripura Info, which reported the death on 6 October 2026, Sarkar collapsed late on Sunday night, around midnight, after going to the toilet while on duty. Colleagues shifted him to the BSF hospital inside the complex, where doctors declared him brought dead. The report attributes the death to a massive cardiac arrest. The same account states that the night coincided with the birthday of his younger daughter, Priyangshi, which was being marked at the family’s rented home in Agartala. He had spoken to his wife and daughters earlier that evening and had said he would come home on leave during Durga Puja.
He is survived by his wife, Madhavi Das, whom he married in 2016, and their two daughters. The family lives in a rented house in Agartala. A subsequent report in Tripura Times on 7 October also named his parents, an elder brother and three sisters among the survivors, and placed the daughters’ ages between four and seven.
Accounts of the timeline differ. Tripura Info reported that the body reached Agartala on the morning of 6 October. Tripura Times, published the next day, stated that he fell ill on Tuesday, was rushed to hospital and declared dead, and that the body was flown to Agartala Airport on Wednesday morning. That report also recorded a spontaneous bike rally by local youths from the airport to Rangutia, and said the BSF completed formalities and accorded a guard of honour. Tripura Times gave his age as 36 and spelt the name Premjoy Sarkar. No official BSF statement was available in either report.
Residents of Rangutia described the village as shaken by the death. Prayers were offered for the departed jawan, who had completed about 15 years of service.
