New Delhi, October 5: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended a Sub-Inspector of the Delhi Police, posted at Prashant Vihar Police Station, while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹80,000.
The agency registered the case on October 4 on a complaint that the Sub-Inspector, who was the investigating officer in a criminal case at the same police station, had demanded ₹1 lakh from the complainant in exchange for favouring him in the proceedings.
According to the CBI, the officer conducted a personal search of the complainant, found ₹20,000 in his pocket, and took the amount under duress. He then directed the complainant to bring the remaining ₹80,000. The CBI laid a trap on October 4 and caught the Sub-Inspector red-handed while he was demanding and accepting the balance amount.
The officer has been apprehended. Further investigation is underway. His name has not been disclosed in the agency’s account of the case.
In a statement, the CBI said: “The strict action by the CBI against corrupt public servants underscores its firm commitment to curbing corruption. Citizens who come across instances of corruption or are subjected to demands for bribes by public officials are encouraged to report such matters. They may visit the office of the CBI to lodge their complaints or share relevant information.”
The allegation centres on an investigating officer seeking an undue advantage from the person whose case he was handling a direct conflict with his official duty. The agency has not stated the sections invoked or whether a charge-sheet has been filed. Those details are expected to emerge as the investigation proceeds.
