Reasi, October 10, 2026: A 37-year-old Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable died after sustaining a gunshot injury from his service rifle while on duty at the Salal Power Station in Jyotipuram, Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday, October 9.
The deceased has been identified as Mohammad Mushtaq (also reported as Mushtaq Ahmad), son of Muhammad Din (Mohammad Deen), a resident of Mari (also referred to as Marhi or Maadi) village in Reasi district. He was deployed for the security of the Salal Hydroelectric Power Station.
According to reports, the incident occurred while Mushtaq was on duty. After the sound of a gunshot, other CISF personnel rushed to the spot and shifted him to the District Hospital Reasi for emergency treatment. Medical Superintendent of the hospital, Karam Veer Singh, confirmed that Mushtaq was brought in with gunshot injuries. “We provided whatever first aid we could. His condition was quite critical, so after providing first aid, we referred him to another hospital,” Singh said. Mushtaq was referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu but succumbed to his injuries en route.
Some preliminary reports have suggested the possibility of a self-inflicted injury, while other accounts describe the circumstances as mysterious or suspicious. Officials have stated that it is premature to conclude the exact nature of the incident. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation. The CISF has also ordered a separate probe into the circumstances leading to the firing and the constable’s death.
The incident comes amid recent cases involving firearm injuries to security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir. A detailed inquiry is expected to establish the sequence of events.
