Amandeep Singh Mathon (35), a native of Kapurthala in Punjab, has graduated from the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Officer Training School and been commissioned as a Pilot Officer. The development marks a notable milestone for an Indian-origin family with a multi-generational tradition of military service.
Educated at the Army School in Kapurthala, Amandeep has carried forward his family’s longstanding association with the armed forces. His father, Sewa Singh, and grandfather, Nirmal Singh, both served in the Indian Army. His mother’s father and brother also served in the Indian Army. The Mathon family relocated to Australia nearly two decades ago and now resides in Melbourne.
Amandeep is one of three brothers. He and his younger brother, Kamalpreet, serve in the RAAF. Kamalpreet was commissioned as a Flying Officer (Aeronautical Engineer) in 2025 after completing the Initial Officer Course at the Officer Training School in Sale, Victoria. Their elder brother, Sarabjit Singh Mathon, earlier served in the Australian Army and now serves as a police officer with the New South Wales Police Force.
Speaking to The Tribune from Australia, Amandeep’s mother, Amarjeet Kaur, said her sons follow in the footsteps of their father. “We moved to Australia years ago, and my sons have worked very hard to achieve this feat. They started out on student visas and worked hard, balancing jobs and studies before undergoing rigorous training to join the forces.
It is my husband’s defence background and my sons’ upbringing in that environment that strengthened their resolve.” She added that immediately after his passing-out parade, Amandeep remarked that the uniform was “not just a uniform for me; it’s a way of life.” The family has received numerous congratulatory messages following the commissioning.
Amandeep’s father, Sewa Singh, noted that a spirit of service has been deeply ingrained in the Mathon family for generations. “Amandeep’s grandfather, Nirmal Singh, and I both served in the Indian Army. This proud legacy now continues in Australia, where the new generation remains committed to serving the nation and society.”
He observed that Australia had provided the family with opportunities and a platform to build a new life through hard work, and that the family’s sense of gratitude reinforces their view of service as a duty.
The commissioning of Amandeep Singh Mathon, following that of his brother Kamalpreet, underscores the continuing contribution of the Indian-origin diaspora to Australia’s defence forces while sustaining a family tradition of military service that originated in India.
