Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case against the wife of a senior Indian Army officer for allegedly collecting and sharing sensitive information with foreign intelligence operatives linked to China. The accused, a resident of Telangana currently residing in Jammu, has been booked under provisions of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). She has not been arrested, and preliminary inquiries have not yet established that any sensitive information was transmitted.

An FIR (No. 290/2026) was registered on Friday, 16 October 2026, at Gandhi Nagar Police Station in Jammu under Sections 3 and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, along with Sections 152 and 61(2) of the BNS. Section 3 of the Official Secrets Act covers offences relating to the collection or communication of information prejudicial to national security, while Section 5 deals with the wrongful communication, retention, or handling of protected information. The accused was subsequently questioned by a Deputy Superintendent of Police-rank officer.

According to preliminary investigations by intelligence agencies, Chinese operatives posing as academicians contacted the woman and engaged her to write articles and write-ups on subjects of strategic and operational significance. The interaction reportedly began with topics related to the environment and geopolitics before shifting towards defence-related issues. Investigators have described this as an “intellectual trap,” with the accused allegedly interacting with the individuals without realising they were intelligence operatives rather than genuine academics.

Sources have indicated that the matter came under scrutiny following inputs alleging clandestine collection, possession, and transmission of sensitive documents, photographs, and electronic data having a bearing on state security. Such information is suspected to have been shared through encrypted communication channels. However, police have not publicly disclosed further details regarding the precise nature of any documents, the identities of the foreign contacts, or the extent of any information transfer. The investigation is also examining the circumstances that led to the registration of the FIR and the nature of the accused’s research-related activities.

Multiple reports, citing official sources and PTI, confirm that the accused has not been arrested as of 18 October 2026, and that the preliminary inquiry has “not established” that any sensitive information was shared by her. The probe remains ongoing, with security agencies assessing electronic evidence and possible links with foreign intelligence networks.

This case highlights a known modus operandi employed by foreign intelligence agencies, particularly those linked to China, of approaching individuals through academic or research covers to gradually elicit information of strategic value. The matter is being investigated by Jammu and Kashmir Police in coordination with intelligence agencies. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.
