Trainee IPS Officer M. Uday Krishna Reddy Granted Conditional Bail in Sexual Harassment Case After 67 Days in Jail

Trainee IPS officer M. Uday Krishna Reddy was granted conditional bail on Tuesday by the Upparpally court in a sexual harassment case filed by a fellow probationer at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), Hyderabad. He was released after about 67 days in judicial custody.

The court ordered bail on two sureties of ₹25,000 each and directed him to appear before the police every Sunday. The order does not dispose of the case. Investigation and trial proceedings continue, and Reddy remains under suspension from the Academy.

The case

Attapur police registered the case on July 18, 2026, on a complaint by a woman IPS probationer undergoing training at SVPNPA. She is reported to be about 30 years old, married, and from Karnataka. The complaint was later taken up by the Hyderabad City Police Women’s Safety Wing.

According to the complaint and the police remand report, the alleged harassment spanned roughly June 23 to July 10, 2026. The complainant alleged that Reddy sexually assaulted and harassed her, stalked her, wrongfully confined her, criminally intimidated her, and caused hurt. She further alleged that he recorded a private video without consent and sent it to her husband in an attempt to blackmail her. Police also cited abusive messages, threats, and damage to her laptop.

The case was booked under Sections 74, 75, 77, 78, 79, 115(2), 127(2) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with provisions of the Information Technology Act. These cover sexual assault, harassment, voyeurism, stalking, wrongful confinement, criminal intimidation and causing hurt. Both the complainant and the accused underwent medical examination. Police earlier said doctors recorded injuries on the complainant, including bruising on the cheek, marks around the neck and throat, and an injury on the left leg.

Reddy has denied the allegations. In a petition before the Telangana High Court seeking quashing of the FIR, and in public statements, he has maintained that the two were in a relationship that began during the foundation course at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, and continued at SVPNPA. He has claimed the complaint followed the breakdown of that relationship after the complainant married an IAS officer on May 28, 2026, and was filed after he declined to resume it. These claims remain his version and have not been adjudicated.

Arrest and custody

Reddy, a 2025-batch IPS probationer from Woollapallem in Singarayakonda mandal of Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district, had worked as a police constable before clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination. He joined training at SVPNPA in December 2025.

After the FIR, he was untraceable for several days. Police teams traced him through technical surveillance and intercepted him on July 28, 2026, near Damaracherla in Nalgonda district, on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Officers said he had switched off his phones and resisted arrest. He was medically examined and produced before the Upparpally court, which on July 29 remanded him to 14 days’ judicial custody. He was lodged at Chanchalguda Central Jail. Custody was extended thereafter.

On August 4, the Rajendranagar Metropolitan Magistrate Court rejected his plea for interim bail to appear before an internal inquiry committee of the Academy. The Telangana High Court had earlier declined interim relief in his petition to quash the FIR and issued notice to the complainant.

In September, the High Court set aside a magistrate’s order of August 17 that had permitted a potency test under Section 52 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Justice J. Srinivas Rao held that the prosecution’s application was not legally sustainable, while clarifying that the prosecution could approach the court again if required. That order did not affect the criminal case.

SVPNPA placed Reddy under suspension after an internal inquiry examined material, including CCTV footage, and found the allegations fit for further proceedings. The Academy’s inquiry and the criminal investigation have proceeded separately.

Tuesday’s conditional bail ends his judicial custody of about 67 days. He remains an accused, and the conditions require his continued appearance before the investigating agency.
