She follows the trailblazing footsteps of Squadron Leader Mohana Singh Jitarwal, who made history in September 2024 as the first woman to fly the Tejas with the squadron, famously known as the “Flying Bullets”, based at Naliya Air Force Station in Gujarat.

A Rising Fighter Pilot

Sqn Ldr Priya Sharma, the seventh woman fighter pilot commissioned in the IAF, has demonstrated exceptional professionalism and operational capability. Her transition to the advanced Tejas platform reflects both her individual excellence and the Air Force’s focus on modernisation and indigenous defence systems.

Roots in Rajasthan’s Military Legacy

Hailing from Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan—a region known for its strong military tradition—Priya Sharma is the third woman fighter pilot from the area. Her passion for aviation was shaped early in life, inspired by her father, a serving IAF officer.

During his posting at Bidar Air Force Station, she developed a fascination for flying while watching aircraft like Jaguars and Hawks, which motivated her to pursue a career in military aviation.

Training and Early Career

  • Commissioned in December 2018 from the Air Force Academy, Dundigal
  • Only woman fighter pilot in her batch
  • Trained on legacy platforms, including the MiG-21 Bison
  • Participated in the ceremonial farewell of the MiG-21, marking the end of an era

Her experience on high-performance fighter jets laid a strong foundation for her transition to modern platforms.

Induction into Tejas Squadron

After gaining operational experience, Sqn Ldr Priya Sharma has now been inducted into the No. 18 Squadron, operating the advanced LCA Tejas.

Her induction marks:

  • Growing role of women in frontline combat roles
  • Strengthening of indigenous aviation capability
  • Enhanced diversity and operational strength in the IAF

Significance

The presence of officers like Sqn Ldr Priya Sharma and Sqn Ldr Mohana Singh Jitarwal reflects the Indian Air Force’s evolving approach toward inclusivity and capability building.

Their achievements continue to inspire young women across the country to pursue careers in defence and aviation.

Conclusion

With the induction of its second woman Tejas pilot, the Indian Air Force reinforces its commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat and gender inclusion, while enhancing its combat readiness with skilled and motivated officers.
