New Delhi, May 2, 2026 — Mobile phone users across India are receiving test emergency alerts today as part of a nationwide drill to evaluate the country’s indigenous Cell Broadcast Alert System. The exercise, coordinated by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in collaboration with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, commenced on Saturday and is designed to test the reliability and reach of real-time disaster warning capabilities.

The Cell Broadcast technology enables authorities to transmit geo-targeted emergency messages directly to all compatible mobile devices within a specific area, without relying on individual SMS or internet connectivity. This marks a significant advancement in India’s disaster management infrastructure, allowing for rapid dissemination of critical alerts during events such as earthquakes, floods, cyclones, or other natural and man-made calamities. The ongoing nationwide trials assess the system’s performance ahead of its formal inauguration.

Recipients of the test alerts have reported loud beeps, vibrations, and pop-up messages appearing on their devices. The standard test message reads as follows: “This is a TEST Cell Broadcast message sent by the National Disaster Management Authority in coordination with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Government of India, as part of testing the Cell Broadcast solution for disseminating alerts. During the testing of the Cell Broadcast solution, you may receive this message multiple times on your mobile handset. Please ignore these message(s); no action is required at your end.” The notifications are being delivered in English, Hindi, and various regional languages, depending on the device settings and location.

Officials have emphasised that the drill is purely precautionary and routine. No public response or action is necessary, and citizens have been urged not to panic upon receiving the messages. The test is being conducted across the country, including major cities such as Bengaluru and Delhi, with reports confirming alerts reaching users in multiple states. Some sources indicate that Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah and Union Minister Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia are associated with the launch of the fully operational system today, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing national disaster preparedness.

This initiative forms part of the broader pan-India rollout of the Cell Broadcast facility, also referred to in some contexts as the ‘SACHET’ system. By conducting comprehensive testing, authorities aim to ensure seamless integration and high reliability before the system becomes fully operational for public safety purposes. The technology is expected to complement existing alert mechanisms and provide faster, more effective communication during emergencies.

The Government of India has requested the public to treat these alerts as part of the scheduled drill. Mobile users with Cell Broadcast features enabled on their devices are most likely to receive the notifications. Authorities continue to monitor the system’s response and have assured that further updates will be provided as the trials progress.
