Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), congratulated Surgeon Vice Admiral Shankar Subramanian on assuming the prestigious appointment of Director General Medical Services (Navy) on May 11, 2026.
An alumnus of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, and a gold medallist from Pune University in 1988, Surg VAdm Subramanian is recognised as a distinguished physician, academician, researcher, and military medical leader.
A specialist in Medicine, he has also undergone advanced training in Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.
Prior to taking over as DGMS (Navy), he served as Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Medical) at Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS). Over the course of his career, he has held several important appointments, including Head of Department (Medicine) at AFMC Pune, Commandant of Command Hospital Air Force Bengaluru, and Principal Medical Officer at Headquarters Eastern Air Command.
His appointment reflects the continued emphasis on strengthening medical leadership and healthcare capabilities within the Indian Navy and the broader Armed Forces Medical Services.
