Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, AVSM, SM**, Army Commander, Western Command, paid solemn homage to Naik Ajay Kumar and Lance Naik Rohit Narayan Patil, the two Indian Army Special Forces personnel who lost their lives during a watermanship training exercise in the Yamuna River in Haryana. Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh laid a wreath and paid tribute to the bravehearts, remembering their courage, dedication and unwavering commitment to duty.
Naik Ajay Kumar and Lance Naik Rohit Narayan Patil were personnel of the Parachute Regiment’s Special Forces. Patil belonged to 1 Para Special Forces, while Ajay Kumar was from Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir. Both soldiers lost their lives during a training accident near Hathnikund Barrage in Yamunanagar district, Haryana, underscoring the risks undertaken by Special Forces personnel even during peacetime training.
The incident occurred during a watermanship training exercise involving an Army boat carrying five soldiers. According to the details available, the boat developed a technical snag and lost power before strong currents carried it towards the downstream side of the barrage. The boat subsequently became caught in powerful currents and eddies near the sluice gates before capsizing.
Three of the soldiers aboard the boat managed to swim to safety, while two personnel were swept away by the strong current. A large-scale search and rescue operation was subsequently launched to locate the missing soldiers.
The operation involved multiple agencies, including Army personnel, Indian Air Force helicopters, the National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force teams from Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, police and civil administration authorities. Water release from the barrage and the Western Yamuna Canal was also reduced to facilitate the search and recovery efforts.
The search continued for more than a day before both missing soldiers were located. Naik Ajay Kumar’s body was recovered during the night of September 3 from the Yamuna near Bartha village in Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Lance Naik Rohit Narayan Patil’s body was subsequently recovered from the Hansi Branch Canal near Jind in Haryana, nearly 200 kilometres downstream from the site of the accident.
Patil, a resident of Sangli district in Maharashtra, was serving with 1 Para Special Forces, one of the Special Forces battalions of the Parachute Regiment. The battalion, known as “Pratham”, has a long association with specialised military operations and maintains capabilities required for high-risk missions and demanding operational environments.
Watermanship and river-crossing drills form part of the specialised training undertaken by personnel preparing for operations in complex terrain and difficult environmental conditions. Such exercises are designed to build the ability of soldiers to operate effectively in situations where terrain, water obstacles and other environmental factors can directly affect operational mobility.
The accident therefore highlighted the inherent risks associated with Special Forces training. While such exercises are conducted to prepare personnel for demanding operational situations, the unpredictable nature of water currents, equipment failures and challenging environments can create significant hazards.
The loss of Naik Ajay Kumar and Lance Naik Rohit Narayan Patil has been particularly significant for their comrades and families. The recovery of both bodies brought an end to the search operation, while arrangements for identification, last rites and formal military tributes followed as part of the Army’s established procedures.
The wreath-laying ceremony by Lt Gen Pushpendra Singh reflected the Army’s longstanding tradition of honouring personnel who make the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. The tribute was also a reaffirmation that the service and sacrifice of soldiers remain deeply valued by the institution and their comrades.
