Avadi, 7 September 2026: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has taken a significant step towards strengthening specialised security and airbase ground defence training with the inauguration of the Indian Air Force Ground Defence College at Air Force Station Avadi.
The newly established institution was inaugurated on Monday by Air Marshal S Sivakumar, VSM, Air Officer-in-Charge Administration (AOA).
Coinciding with the inauguration, the first Ground Combat Course commenced at the new facility, marking the beginning of specialised training aimed at strengthening the IAF’s ground defence capabilities.
The establishment of the Ground Defence College reflects the IAF’s growing emphasis on preparing personnel to safeguard airbases and other critical installations against a range of security threats.
Modern air operations depend not only on aircraft and aerial capabilities but also on the security and resilience of the bases from which they operate. Specialised ground combat and security training therefore plays a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted air operations, particularly during heightened threat environments.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by representatives from Headquarters Maintenance Command and Training Command, along with invitees from the Defence Forces and civil security agencies.
The participation of representatives from different military and civil security organisations also highlighted the importance of coordination and exchange of expertise in protecting strategically important installations.
With the commencement of the first Ground Combat Course, the IAF Ground Defence College is expected to serve as a dedicated centre for developing specialised skills, operational preparedness and professional expertise required for airbase ground defence and security operations.
