Jammu, September 8, 2026 — A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawan allegedly shot himself in the head with his service rifle at Jammu Airport on Tuesday, officials said. His condition was reported to be critical.
The incident occurred outside the airport’s exit gate, where the personnel, identified as Sunil Jasrotia, was posted on security duty. Officials, quoting initial reports, said Jasrotia, a resident of Kathua district, used his service weapon, causing panic among people present at the airport.
On hearing the gunshot, colleagues rushed to the scene and found him in a pool of blood. He was immediately evacuated to Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Jammu. Doctors described his condition as critical. The circumstances leading to the incident were not immediately known.
A local report provided additional identifying details, stating that Jasrotia, 36, son of Rachpal Jasrotia and a resident of Hiranagar in Kathua district, was injured around 4 p.m. near the exit gate. That account described the service rifle as having discharged accidentally and causing severe injuries to the head and face. Police have taken cognisance of the matter and launched an investigation to establish the exact circumstances.
Senior CISF officers reached the spot after the incident. Airport operations were not reported to have been disrupted for a prolonged period, though the gunshot created momentary alarm among those present.
As of Wednesday morning, no official statement had clarified motive or ruled out competing initial accounts of self-inflicted injury versus accidental discharge. Further details are expected as the inquiry proceeds.
