Gumla (Jharkhand), 23 September 2026: A Border Security Force (BSF) personnel was killed and four others, including his wife and a one-year-old child, were injured on Wednesday morning when a car collided head-on with a two-wheeler in Gumla district.
The deceased has been identified as Bhado Kerketta, 40, a BSF jawan who had returned home on leave approximately 15 days earlier. He was travelling with his wife, Umrila Kerketta, an anganwadi sewika, from their residence at Newatoli in Gumla Sadar block to her workplace at the anganwadi centre in Baghpancha village, about 23 kilometres away, when the accident occurred.
The incident took place around 11 a.m. under the limits of Palkot police station, near Semra jungle and the Marda river. A car travelling from Basia towards Armai village in Gumla Sadar block struck the two-wheeler coming from the opposite direction. The car, a Maruti Alto 800, was being driven by Laxman Oraon, who was accompanied by his wife Renu and their one-year-old daughter Jareena.
Ankit Raj, officer-in-charge of Palkot police station, stated that one of the five persons involved was declared dead on arrival at Gumla Sadar Hospital. The remaining four were reported to be stable. Police seized both vehicles and initiated an investigation. The body of the deceased was taken into custody for postmortem.
The injured—Umrila Kerketta, Laxman Oraon, Renu Oraon and the infant Jareena—were admitted to Gumla Sadar Hospital for treatment. Local reports indicated that a journalist assisted in transporting the injured to the hospital.
No further official information on the BSF unit of the deceased or on the precise cause of the collision was immediately available. Police inquiries into the circumstances of the accident were continuing.
